The reason it is hard is because linguistically our minds, (For english speakers), Is to fill in the middle spot with a vowel. This is because it ends with a D, and has 3 letters. There are far more prepositions and words such as Had, Hid, Lid, that we will not often think to place the vowel first, Old, Eld, Aid, ect.

Winning on WOF takes more than just calling the right letters and spinning; you also need to have a satisfactory grasp of pop culture, and, in the case of the bonus round puzzle, 1st grade geography.

The first was obvious enough even despite the criminal lack of punctuation: "wicked witch" was a dead giveaway that it was from the Wizard of Oz, and the word "which" pointed to the song. At that point, you don't even need to have seen the movie to guess it correctly.

With the way those letters were placed, I think they were just trying to figure out what that little word was. They might have been thinking, "Which BAD Witch" or "Which GOD Witch" or something.
