Pretty good video :) I have never R&R'd brakes before but my front brakes are toast. I am going to get the "loaded" caliper/brake pad kit, hoping it will be less time consuming for me (novice). In a couple of the other videos I watched, the person(s) commented on using a torque wrench to apply the correct tightness on the bolts... how important is this? Next time you video changing brakes or whatever.. you should think about using a novice to do it while you talk them through it, good for us!
@Bleiybomb....since topping the fluid off didn't work, it could be from air being in the lines, in which case you would have to bleed the brakes. It could also be your master cylinder needing to be replaced. If bleeding the brakes doesn't work, I'd check your master cylinder.
hey just a question i have a 1996 ram 1500 slt, and yesterday my brakes were rock solid and today i have to floor it to stop. I checked my brake fluid level and it was a the minimum line, so i filled it up with more brake fluid and the brakes are still spongy... any suggestions? Do i most likely have to bleed the lines because there's an air bubble in it?
@Me112233...I think it cost me $150 total to put in new components for the front brakes if price is the issue...I guess I would have saved some money if we turned them instead but my rotors were quit different in thickness. The caliper on one side of my truck wasn't working correctly for quite some time which made the one rotor pretty uneven. That's why I put new ones on instead. I should have pointed that out on the video.
If your caliper was the only thing that was wrong, you could have just turned the rotor instead of buying a new one, unless the one you had on there was really thin, guess it doesn't hurt to put new ones on if you have the $, good video man, helped out a lot.
@anonuhmys I have 300,000 miles on my truck, and NEVER turned the rotors. The braking efficiency is barely affected by a groove caused by an over-worn pad, and the new pads quick conform to any grove. If the rotor has a wave in it, you will know from how the vehicle behaves when you push the brake pedal. Anyway . . . . I too wonder why someone would replace a rotor just for the fun of it. It's a lot of work to install/pack bearings, not to mention the cost of the rotor and new bearings.
Why didn't you just rebuild the caliper? That would have made for a good video addition. I guess if you have the money, just buy new or redone. Good Video
@bertengineer The last time I needed to rebuild a caliper (1993 Park Avenue Ultra), the parts store would sell me a rebuit caliper for about the same price as a piston kit. Made no sense, but that was how it was.
@ Aggie Galveston--The truck in the video is a 97 Dodge Ram 1500 with the sport package. As far as I know that's the way it came, but I've heard those trucks come with a natural lift...maybe 2 inches. The tires are a little bigger than the stock ones.
man keep makin videos this was very help ful..i new literally nothing about brakes but now i think i no enough to do mine on my dodge truck. thanks man so much keep makin videos!
