The Paul Williams band did a good job accompanying The Clovers. PW is the bandleader, baritone sax player in the dark colored suit. Although you cannot see him because three of the Clovers members are in front on him. The Paul Williams band was the houseband for the Apollo Theater.
A friend of Plas Johnson brought this clip to my attention. Plas Johnson is a fantastic tenor player and still going strong but he is not in this clip and I do not know who is playing tenor. A Frank Culley played on one of the Clovers' early hits, "Don't You Know I Love You", which is covered in the Clovers' history but he is not given credit for this tune. Compare the face on the clip with an early photo of Johnson. But thanks for mentioning his name!
@rockandrollsax Culley demanded that in order for the Clovers to use his band on Don't You Know I Love You and Fool, Fool, Fool that he be allowed to take the solo
Great video. Love the Clovers especially their guitarist who signals the stops to the band. The backing is done by the Paul Williams Orchestra and I think the sax player is Noble Watts.
Thanks. I posted he video and always wondered who PW was...thought it might be the host..and I thought the sax might be Plas Johnson but never really knew..and am I the only onle that notices there a bit flat on the very last note? No big deal
@FairDealDan Great video, thanks. Yeah, they do go flat for a moment at the end, but that tells us the performance was really live, and, as the great Robert Shaw is supposed to have said, "never be the only one who sings the right note."
i love this version its got much more drive than the studio version.
is there an alt version maybe? anybody?

It's "every time you strut that thing", not "touch".

Far out real groovy, zoot suits and ties who is the guy on the sax? The Clovers always had good musical sense.

The Clovers should be in the top five of all group harmony groups of the 50's. Great R&B, swing, doowop. They did it all.

Youtube needs more Clovers, and so does the 21st Century.
