  • I am so thankful that you post your lessons! Such a beautiful song, so well played. I've listened to lesson 1& 2 and your cover and know the song now - but I'm basically a beginner and I'm stuck/can;t pick up what you do at 4:06- 4:09 in your cover. Can you describe it ?

  • thanks for the kind words and checking out the videos! I'm grabbing the b string 1st fret & the G string 2nd fret and sliding it up two frets and then back down and then open B & G and then a hammer on 2nd fret D string. Hope this helps if not shoot me a private message. All the best with your music,

    dale

  • Is this in an open key?

  • It's in open G tuning - I have 2 tutorial vids that cover entire song. Thanks for watching!

    dale

  • A song from the past brought so beautifully to the present. Thanks for sharing its simplicity in a perfect setting and teaching others to play along. A real joy!

  • thanks for watching! All the best,

    dale

  • I have watched a few of your lessons, and have to say you are a very good teacher, this particular song has long been a favourite of mine, ( like most of the Doobie Brothers) so to learn this one is a real treat, I play it on my Tak 12-string, sounds good to me! Thanks, keep up the the good work man,

  • thanks for taking your time to watch and your post is greatly appreciated! DB are terrific with some timeless stuff - all the best with your music!

    dale

  • almost played the skunk steel lead towards the end there with just the whine of the treble strings.Nice one!

  • Jeff Baxter is one of my faves - what a brilliant player and person - thanks for giving this a listen!

    dale

  • Is the Collings you are playing in this video the deep body version you mentioned? Unbelievable tone and volume for that body style. I'm going to have to try and find me one. Thanks for the info.

  • It is - I think it gives the guitar a deeper/fuller tone the sometimes smaller bodied guitars can lack. Get your hands on one & see what you think.

  • What an awesome sounding guitar. What model is that?

  • It is a Collings C-10 - this guitar has the deep body option and adi/mah woods. Thanks for watching!

  • Hey Dale ,since you're so good with that open D tuning how about a lesson of Come and Go Blues by the Allman Brothers.

    Mike

  • oh that's a great tune! i'll need to give that one a listen for sure.......hey i just want to say again what a fan i am of your GREAT playing -- you make it look effortless!

  • what a GREAT album! thanks for taking your time to check this out and your kind words are appreciated - all the best!

    dale

  • I watched and commented on this video about 2 years ago. For a while it went out of my memory but I was driving home the other night and it occured to me that your cover was the best I had ever heard. This song is so inspirational. Always brings a tear to my eye because it reminds me of the long cold winters and the truckies who live lonely lives going to highway diners etc etc and not seeing their families and kids. Well done on showing how to play this song.... you done a top job !!

  • A sincere thanks for your kind post! You know maybe that's why I love this song so much as well, it just seems to have soul & speaks to your heart & takes you somewhere special - thanks for sharing what it means to you!

  • Hi Dale. Seems that Bruce and I had the same revelation. Open G - whoda thunk! Your instructional videos were great, and now I can play this classic the way it was meant to be. In the over 40 years since I first heard SCML, it has always given me goose bumps, and it now happens when I play it. Thanks for the videos and please keep them coming.

    Dave

  • hey Dave - sure appreciate your kind post and thanks for taking your time to check out the video! I feel just like you - when i play the tune it just takes me to a great place - wish we could play it together and maybe even have Pat sing it with us........can always dream can't we!

    your friend,

    dale

  • nice work tonedr!

  • thanks for watching!

  • Thanks for your video and an xtra thanks for taking the time to provide the tuition videos - this is what You Tube's all about. Cheers and take care.

  • your kind post is greatly appreciated as is your time to watch - I wish you all the best in the new year and all the best with your music as well!

    dale

  • davychavelle has had the songbook for over 30 years but I've had the album for almost 40 and playing it (incorrectly, so it seems) for just as long. Open tunings just didn't occur to me for some reason as well I being the lead guitarist I mostly concentrated on the task at hand. Thank you so much Dale for unlocking this mystery for me. I can't wait to see what other songs you have for me to relearn. Cheers.

    bruce

  • hello Bruce, i can appreciate your post...where have the 30 years gone but i've been a fan of this tune like yourself for all those years! Appreciate you checking out the video - wish we could pick it together! All the best,

    dale

  • Ah, but we have, not two hours ago. And we will again. Take care.

    bruce

  • Hey Dale! I had to come and listen again! Still love it! Drop a line when you get a chance. Have a wonderful holiday for you and your family. All the best from you're CT friend, Larry

  • hello sir! Man it is great to hear from you and one of my musical highlights of the year was hearing Rewing cover SCML - i hope you and your family have a great season as well and a terrific 2010 - your friend,

    dale

  • Dale.......a beautiful cover of a beautiful and somewhat haunting song! I've had a Doobie Brothers Complete song book for over 30 yrs and enjoy playing the basic chords to this tune. I'm not a guitar player but enjoy singing, so I indulged myself by singing Patrick's parts over your instrumentation. Thanks for sharing your talents!

  • We need to get together!! Isn't it great that this tune is still amazing after 3 decades! Thanks for a great post,

    dale

  • Beautifull playing on a beautiful guitar. Nice tone you got happening there! Are you on the Collings Forum my friend? LOTS of info and fun over there!...Kerry K

  • thanks for your kind post.......greatly appreciated! I'm Maplebaby on the Collings forum......agreed, great place!

  • thanks dale...........could you do some john mayer? keep up the great guitar playing

  • i appreciate the suggestion - i have a couple of JM tunes i've thought about posting. Hope all is good,

    dale

  • Its amazing listening to rustic vintage acoustic guitar. You play so well. It reminds us of the simpler things in life. That really at the end of the day, all we need is food, shelter, sleep and love. I can picture you playing in a log cabin high in the mountains with the fireplace going on the side. Cheers man - GREAT JOB !!

  • life does get a busy and i agree with your thoughts - hope all is well friend!

    dale

  • Saw DB concert at the LA Forum back in the mid 70's.. One of my fav DB tunes of my high school days and now it's a whole different high to be able to play this one, which you do so well. Thanks to your lessons, I can play SCML. There's a certain calmness & humbleness in your teaching style that I think other instructors ought to take note.

Blessings & Hafa Adai all way the from the island of Guam.

  • thank you for the kind post.....very appreciated. Also thanks for sharing part of your DB story! What a great band and it sounds like we both go back a 'day or two' with their great music. Keep playing sir and it was great to connect - your friend,

    dale

  • +1. Great job Dale.

  • sure appreciate you watching - hope you and your family are all doing great,

    dale

  • thanks so much....really appreciate you taking time to listen! All the best,

    dale

  • I have been playing this song for 35 years using standard tuning and it never sounded like the real thing. Thank you for showing me the obvious of changing the tuning. Do you know the lead part for the elecrtric (which I also play on my acoustic). I am real close on that too, but I bet tht uses standard tuning. what brand and model is your acoustic?

  • hello....i'm thrilled to hear the video maybe helped to get you where you wanted to be....wish we could play it together! I do know the electric line fairly close and yes i play it in standard tunning.

the guitar is a Collings C-10 with a bit deeper body for a little more mid and low end.

really appreciate you watching and thanks for your feedback,

    your friend,

    dale

  • Hi dale. I've been l've been playing this song this way for 30+ years. I'm glad you shared it with the world. What part of the country do you live in? THANKS! Terry

  • hello Terry.......i'm in central KY. 30 years......wow where does time go! Hope all is good sir,

    dale

  • Too bad you're not in Calif.

  • Fantastic! What a great performance. Dale, you rock! TimG

  • Thanks so much for watching Tim! Sure hope all is good,

    dale

  • Dale, other than Slow Burn (from the Wild Life Tour album) this is about my most favorite Doobie Tune. You did a smashing job of playing Patrick's licks! Great lesson to go with this one as well. If I could give you 100 stars, I would. 5 is all I have to give, unfortunately...hahaha.

    LC

  • hello LC, i'm so with you about this great tune!! Man i just love it after all these years. Sure appreciate your kind words sir, all the best,

    dale

  • WOW! What a flawless, beautiful version! Amazing what great music some folks can do with only one instrument. Keep it up!

  • i sure appreicate you taking time to watch and thanks for your very kind feedback! All the best,

    dale

  • Still working this one Dale, and lovin the process too, thanks man. I've got a question tho, how do I minimize the "squeelies" (as my spouse calls em) caused by all the sliding?Playing on elixers light (new)....... :)

    Thanks for your lessons.

  • hello my friend! I'm glad you are working this tune up......i don't know that you ever can get rid of the string noise completely. The only tip i would have in try to get your finger off the string for big shifts and maybe try to lesson your finger pressure when you can. Keep pickin!!

    dale

  • thx for posting instruction on one of my favs of all time....very nice

  • appreciate you watching.....thanks for the kind feedback!

    dale

    dale

  • Dale,

I just gotta thank you again. I'm having a blast learning this song from you!

How about a Cat Stevens cover and lesson?

Sorry mate, I had to ask.

    All the best friend......

  • i'm very glad you have used the video! Cat Stevens.........and particular tune?

    a fan,

    dale

  • That sir is a lovely guitar and sweet tune. 5 stars

  • thanks so much, i sure appreciate you watching!

    dale

  • Wow, that is a wonderful arrangement of one of my favorite Doobie Brothers songs. I swear you play it better than Patrick Simmons, and with no other accompanyment. I come back often and listen to this version.

    Thanks !

    Kevin

  • hello Kevin, man i appreciate your kind words sir! I really appreciate you watching the video......and in all do respect.....i'm not worthy to untie Mr. Simmons shoes!!!!

    you take care my friend,

    dale

  • Thanks for posting this and the 2 lesson videos. I'm a beginner/intermediate player and never would have figured this out on my own. You do a great job explaining it in the lessons, and your version here stands on it's own as just an instrumental piece. Very nice!

  • i'm so glad you watched the videos and appreciate your kind feedback! Most of all i'm glad you are playing this great song....all the best,

    dale

  • Dale, I opened an account today just to leave you a comment...I could listen to your guitar anyday, all day! Cannot wait to get my guitar!! Long live Pat Simmons and YOU!

  • Thanks Jerry, wish i had you to sing on the video! It is a great old song, all the best,

    dale

  • Done this once with a band - much around the style you play - I used an open G - gotta lisen hard to play it right - then sing it!

  • thanks for watching - great to hear you play this tune! All the best,

    dale

  • Thanks very much for your help. This is my favorite Doobie Bros song, and it was hard for me to learn...until you helped me along.

  • glad you have a channel - sure appreciate your kind words on the video and i appreciate you watching! This is a GREAT old tune and I'm so with you - Pat Simmons is just all that! Take care my friend,

    dale

  • I wish you could see the smile on my face! I've given up on that tune several times over the years. Never met anyone who played it "right". Might as well call in sick, no way I'll be able to pay attention until I've had a chance to retune and fiddle with this! I'm subscibing. Highest marks! Thank you so much for posting!

  • it thrills me that you want to play this great tune! I just posted two lesson videos which may help show the grips i use. I sure appreciate your kind words and let me know if you need anything from me. All the best my friend,

    dale

  • Absolutely gorgeous. Well done. I love this song. Never able to work out that it was full open tuning. Easy now thanks to you. The guitar sounds gorgeous too. Will check out the rest of your videos.

Pat Simmonds is one of the best guitar pickers around and he is certainly no slouch when it comes to raunchy electric guitar solos too. "The Captain and me" is still one of my favourite albums. I have never tired of it. One of the all time classics. Thanks.

  • i sure appreciate you watching and thanks for the kind words! I love Pat Simmons - i grew up listening to all of the Doobies stuff and seeing them live - i'm not sure he ever got or gets the credit he so deserves - what a GREAT player. The Captian & Me had such an influence on me - i really appreciate you taking time to comment - it has made my day! All the best,

    dale

  • No coments..... Just thank you...

  • thanks for watching!

    dale

  • Wow, that was a wonderful cover. I'm curious though, what kind of guitar is that? it looks very smooth, very playable!

I own mostly electric, but i do, however, have a seagull- which is very enjoyable to play, but stuff like this, i find myself fighting it more than i like too.

  • sure appreciate the kind words - thanks for watching. Seagull are nice guitars - i've played a few and been impressed. My guitar is a Collings C-10 model. Has kind of a Gibson vibe to it. I'm very happy to have it. It is easy to play and a great size. Keep on pickin!

    dale

  • Beautifully played my friend. That's one I've never learned, but thanks to you, now I am. I didn't know it was a de-tune number... Thankyou, for the lesson and the sound... I only hope I can play it as well as you one day.... Be good to you.

  • i'm glad you are working it up! It is a great old tune, i appreciate your kind words!

    dale

  • the tonester killin me softly with his awesome rendition baby...high school memories!!!!

  • oh those memories! I'm just glad i can remember! thanks for watching - i appreciate your kind words!

    your friend,

    dale

  • I've been playing that song for 30 something years, but wrong. It was a pleasure to watch it done right. Do you live anywhere close to Nashville? Thanks

  • sounds we both go back a way with this great tune! I appreciate you watching. I live about 3 hrs. from music city, all the best,

    dale

  • Beautiful, I tried to watch Pat Simmons play it. But video did not stay on him long enough

can you do another video and show finger placement at the beginning. It would help me

  • Pat Simmons is the man! I will give that some thought and sure shot you a message if I do, i'm glad you are working this great tune into your list! All the best,

    dale

  • Your rendition is by far the best one ever heard. Thank you for sharing your tallent with the masses.

  • Thanks! I sure appreciate you watching. Hope all is well for you,

    dale

  • tonedr!! beautifulllll job, Pat would be proud of the work you did on South City, it's makes you realise how good Pat Simmons is, to "write" a piece like that!! I've met him, and he's a very humble person, as you would think he would be... The Doobie Brothers, in view of what their accomplishments are, show how diverse they are... No other bands have crossed the map like they, and the Eagles have, with change in style to touch everyone! thanks for the post!

  • i agree with you 100% - the Doobies had unreal talent and Pat Simmons has never gotten the attention, IMO< that he deserves! That is so cool that you have met him, i'm envious! I really appreciate you watching and taking time to comment - from one Doobie fan to another -thanks!

  • Tone Dr you have got that song down! Any chance of getting a guitar tab of that or at least let me in on the tuning. I have seen 2 different tunings DADGBd and DGDDBD. Thanks in advance for the help

    Bob

  • hey Bob, thanks for watching. I don't have tab but I play it in open G - DGDGBD. Let me know if I can ever help,

    dale

  • growing up I saw the Doobies seven times live. your rendition is spot on and you had me singing all the way through. thanks for bringing back so many great memories. your sound is awesome.

  • from one Doobie fan to another -thanks for watching & sharing some memories!

    dale

  • dude you just totally blew me away.

  • i'm glad you enjoyed it - thanks so much for watching and I appreciate your kind words!

    dale

  • Very Nice my friend! I love good relaxing clean playing like that I do vey appreciate it. I wish we lived near eachother. Might be fun. You look like the kind of guy I could have with my songs. Thanks for sharing. Jim

  • thanks so much Jim, i appreciate you watching and i would to play together as well, i'm sure it would be a great time! I appreciate your kind words so much, all the best, dale.

  • Excellent! Are you playing this in G?

    Peace,

    Debi

  • thanks so much, i appreciate your kind words!

  • This deserves more than 5 stars!!! Haha. Excellent job!!

  • i appreciate your kind words, thanks for watching, dale.

  • Excellent rendition. I have been trying to figure this one out for a while. Can you tell me the string/fret positions for the first 4 chords for your middle and ring fingers? I think I can pick up the rest from there. How long did it take you to teach yourself this piece?

Thanks again for the great music!

    Ken

  • I'm pretty sure he's tuned to open G here. I could be wrong.

Nice playing by the way. A real classic. Lazy summer afternoon with the girl next door. Love it.

  • You are right, thanks for the kind words, dale.

  • it is in open G tunning. If you watch my grips with this tunning I think it will come together for you - thanks for watching.

  • Thanks. I actually have always wanted to learn this one. Once I tuned down it was a sinch just from watching you play it.

  • I'm glad it helped - it is a great tune isn't it! I'm glad you worked it up, dale.

  • This is so beautiful ... my family is going to hate you because now I will be singing along to this all the time ;-) ... thank you for the perfect accompaniment for one of my absolute favorite tunes! Bravo!!

  • I'm glad you enjoy this tune as well! Just a great old tune - if you have a minute check out my friend John Fern's vocal over this video - it is listed in my favorites. Thanks so much for watching and your very kind words!

  • great job!

  • Thanks so much!

  • BRAVO!, Great Job.....Where's the voice?

  • I wish I had one! Thanks a lot for watching, dale.

  • A perfect performance Dale. That is an excellent acoustic tone.

  • I sure appreciate the kind words! Thanks so much for watching!

  • I've been playing this song since 1973 and never ever thought about an alternate tuning! Thank you for enlightening me. It sounds fabulous!

  • thanks so much - sounds like we've both enjoyed this tune for a few years! I sure appreciate you watching, dale.

  • hey dale any way you can get tabs for this. very nice

  • i don't have tab - just worked it up by ear, thanks for watching!

  • very nice!!

  • thanks!

  • WOW! This is one of my all time favorite songs. Although I am a guitar player, I do not have the gifts that are needed to pull off a song like that. You were amazing! Thank you so much for sharing that with everyone!
