  • This was my second Phish show and was so fortunate to have seen this.I dont know if anyone has mentioned this but after the storm they was so much mud that Phans was sliding down the grass into other Phans and it looked like human bowling pins,GOOD TIMES

  • Great version of this tune

  • how can anyone dislike that funky opener

  • Best mikes song ever no question

  • Someone told me to tell you all that you can check out a musical group of folks who play music. They would be titled under the name "The Sticky Souls" and I can't post a link for them but you can find them and 'like' them on Facebook. You can also follow them on Sound cloud. They are conveniently located in VERMONT. Their journey in the world of live music is being documented via internet capabilities. So do yourself a favor and taste their noise. I don't want to repeat this! See you at Fest 9!

  • that bassline is too funky for earth

  • Before you get mad, hear me out. I like Phish, but I don't think they're anything spectacular. These guys are incredibly talented, but just like every other band, their songs sound similar. They're still pretty awesome and really creative... and I do have to admit, they are one of the best bands to see live.

  • @BeamMeUpDirty There songs Sound The Smae!?!?? Uhh NO

  • trey looks like he just got off the couch lol

  • Trey.... BURLY neck beard

  • favorite summer tour for mr from Phish...both musically(long funked-out jams) and brotherly...this is the sickest, seemlessly Mike's intro ever...and Walnut was like 2nd or third show of tour!

  • Me be no am no nice guy

  • i love how they can transition from the dwd jam into this. you dont see that as much anymore...

  • my first show is on the 21st, what should i expect besides for amazing music??

  • @cptnjacksteiner another world

  • amazing drugs?

  • @cptnjacksteiner by now you are probably coming down from a dose of rock and roll and who knows what else. long live phish!

  • the best time of your life

  • want to go see them in philly on the 23rd but my mom is afraid to go im pissed haha

  • Does that even make sense?

  • Nov 18th I'm going to my first Phish show, very excited after watching this.

  • :) Went to my first Phish show not too long ago, summer 8/13...You're going to have a blast, it's the most incredible concert experience alive.

  • Yeah me and my older bro are going, he's seen them well over 30 times. He's been educating me pretty much everyday so I don't make an ass of myself.

Also it's in Michigan, and I hear they have a rep with Michigan shows being awesome.

  • I just don't get what the big deal is about these Jam Bands...

  • Comment removed

  • That's a fucking arrogant thing to say. That's the typical jam band, neo-hippie statement though.

I'm a generally nice guy, but don't insinuate I'm uneducated just because I don't listen to over-hyped jam bands.

I know plenty of college kids and adults with Masters degrees even and some of them are the dumbest people I know. Just because you know Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 doesn't mean you're a better, smarter, or more musically inclined person. Fuck off.

  • even if you dont like them, you cant deny how talented they all are, have you listened to reba or fluffhead or you enjoy myself?

  • For sure talented, just not my cup of tea I guess.

Apologies on the flip-out there. I'm sure that's the last thing anybody wants to see on a Phish video.

  • Comment removed

  • Fair enough!

    Namaste.

  • When you lump them all together as "Jam Bands," you're sure to miss the big deal. For example, I love Phish (and GD), but pretty much can't stand the other big names that fall under this unfortunate label. The only thing Phish has in common with most of them is the emphasis on improvisational performances without time constraints. Phish has shown proficiency in many different styles of music, and expertise at their instruments.

  • Sorry for generalizing.

I'm positive they're very talented instrumentalists and very versatile. I just don't see the big deal as in: People following them around to every show, archiving live performances, etc... I guess because of the improvisation?

For me, music is about songwriting and heavy emotions going into it. Not necessarily technique, years of practice, and standards. A song with three chords with very poetic lyrics can be just as powerful as this.

  • Think of it this way: Phish fans have the chance to follow their favorite songs through evolution and (a big arguing point among phans) perfection. Imagine having a favorite song and the chance to dig through old performances and find the version that does it justice. Or puts a new twist on it. Most artists cut an album, fans buy it, and the songs lose their effect after a while. A 3 minute song can only get so much rotation before it drives someone crazy.

  • I do listen to artists that have longer songs that can evolve over time, such as: Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You: Black Emperor, & The American Dollar.

With the three minute songs though, you will have about 1,000 (at least I do) different artists you enjoy to go see live, buy their albums, etc.

A little hyperbolic on the number of artists. I have 122 artists in my iTunes that I thoroughly enjoy. None are filler music and about 1/2 are artists I've seen live at least once.

  • As for the three chords, poetic lyrics and heavy emotions, I'll just respond with pure opinion. That stuff is a dime-a-dozen, and music history is saturated with it. It makes me bored, sets a depressing mood, and doesn't get a crowd off their feet.

I don't think you're being closed-minded. Your views are as important as anybody else's.

  • I'm guessing you're thinking of Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Gram Parsons, perhaps even (gasp) Conor Oberst? Those are all good examples of a great songwriter, but I agree, they may not get you off your feet. Still, a different type of music that I do enjoy.

I like a lot of bluegrass, folk, old time, string band style stuff that will definitely get you off your feet (if you're into it) even more than Phish. Imagine that Titanic scene where the poor passengers are having a party on bottom deck.

  • well songwriting and especially heavy emotion is why they have such a cult following. no offense but there is no way you have ever been to a phish show. i would highly recomend seeing them and i bet you'll understand why they are so loved by so many

  • @brianwildemusic I find myself listening to Phish concerts sometimes wondering, "Am I still listening to the same band?" Of course I know that I'm still listening to Phish, but the point is that they can sound so completely different at the same concert. I think that's one of the reasons why people get so obsessed with Phish. Personally, I'm tired of hearing all of the lame mainstream bands that always sound the same.

  • I do know music is situational and tastes in music are opinionated, so please don't think I'm being close-minded.

I was just not thinking before posting earlier or at least did not explain why I, "..do not get..." Phish and bands that (unfortunately, I guess) fall under the same category.

I come from a different background than most people, so I assume that may have something to do with my taste in music.

  • Me no are no nice guy

  • better than the dead hahaha

  • hahah better than the dead?

these guys wouldnt be around without the grateful dead they started out as a gd "cover band"

i mean hell there the two best bands ever to roam this earth but i give em a tie neither one is better

  • yeah .... idk .... that is true .... i dont even know what i meant when i said that ..... but yeah they are both my favs .... sort of apples and oranges though

  • Thats absolutely incorrect. they never "covered" the dead besides a few songs trey also stated that he wanted nothing to do with the grateful dead. And that he is separate band

  • Completely true. The two bands are basically impossible to compare GD started it all, but phish picked up right where they left off

  • 2:18 is hilarious he is so funny

  • obviously no one is better than The Dead but Phish is very very close behind

  • exactly

  • Yawn. Not as good as the Dead.

  • that slow-mo transition of DWD>Mike's was fucking insane.

  • agreed it is blues scale. But look more into it...It's Mike's Song. That rift describes mike. mxblue you should check out other phish.. Trey uses the key of "T" when he plays. It's his own scale. Oh and you should check out a mikes song jam, ha its not blues scale..

  • This is a really, really high quality Mike's Song in so many ways.

My God does Trey need to shave his neck around 2:25 mark?!!!

  • Sorry, 2:20 mark!! And I thought I was a hairy animal!!! :)

  • Thanks for being an inspiration to the best music on the plante: Matisyahu

    Thanks guys!!!

  • are you kidding?

  • and weres ur sucessful band uni?

  • part of that song is just stolen from funky bitch...cheap...but not surprising since its a "chunky" pentatonic groove and Phish just love themselves a boring pentatonic jam right everyone!

  • blues scale.....

  • B/S Phish is the best musical band ever. They are real musicians not some washed up hippie jam band like youll see at MT Jam or some other disaster festival.

  • You no I'm no nice Guy!

  • ur a fag phish is amazing

  • lol @ haters, why you watching if you hate.

its like me going to a lil' wayne video and talking shit, Lmao

  • this is BORING? what the fuck. no wai dudes. i agree with the voice thing though. the only jam band i think had great lead vocals was the dead. jerry could really sing...

  • this is a stoner band right?

  • define: stoner band. i love the dead and phish, other jam bands, but i rarely get stoned. how many people get stoned to good music? a shitload. stop stereotyping and generalizing.

  • im a huge phishead, but u gotta admit in general it is a bunch of stoners. ive been to about 20 or so phish shows all in all, and ive seen the shit goin on there.

  • trey, page, and fish r stoners. mike gordon isnt.

  • so the fuck what

  • @Linkgt most people generalize it as one yes, but thats usually the people who have to get stoned to enjoy their music. personally, ive never done drugs in my life, and i enjoy this music as much as the next guy.

  • then you obviously have never been to a Phish concert. they are fucking mind blowing. i didn't believe it either at first, and i thought the same thing as you. if you EVER have the opportunity, I urge you to go to a Phish show.

  • I've been to one Phish concert and that was enough for me. The music didn't seem to have any direction and the jams went on for ever and ever and ever. Just didn't do anything for me. Talented musicans but boring songs IMO.

  • fair enough, i respect that.

  • the timing of this band rising up was the demise of the grateful dead....all the deadheads flocked over to them to fill the void, after a while they thought they were the dead........long boring jams.......

  • down with disease> mike's song. gnarliest segue of all time.

  • phish rocks for sure, but if you think trey and mike have great voices... come on. same goes for WSP which is neck and neck with phish imho. im not starting anything im just saying jam bands arent known for great voices. and for the UM guy/people, i saw UM and they rocked it, nice jams, good shit to dance to, but they dont touch phish

  • finally someone i agree with

  • I love you guys! See ya in June and August!

  • mikes got an ill voice

  • I pooped myself

  • share the love

  • 8th row center with god beside me and he couldnt keep up with me

  • move along then

  • piss off

  • Shut the fuck up.

  • Suck a dick

  • Haha good one. Look up Hello My Baby or Glide

  • ya they are a really great band and i like theit stuff but their singing could use some work

p.s.- dont tell a guy to suck a dick for sharing an opinion

  • suck a dick...phish has the vocals of a dove

  • Comment removed

  • what? their voices are fine. even if they're a little off sometimes it just completely adds to the character. and the vocals are definately not bad in songs like grind, the lizards and all the other ones with the sweet harmonies. why don't you just appreciate the music in all it's glory instead of trying to find things "wrong" with it

  • yea i think phish has great vocals especially on their albums

  • the only thing wrong with their vocals is the live harmonies...other than that, fanfriggintastic

  • i bet you listen to top 40 bullshit.

  • i can't see what you said that made everyone made, but ill assume you don't like phish. which is cool i guess but how can you like umphrey's and be a "huge fan" and not like phish? im sorry....ive seen both many times and theres not much comparison. UM's "improv" doesn't really go anywhere. Phish is a true jam band and at their prime offered some ridiculous groooves. umphreys can't touch them on their worst night.

  • fuck off.

  • Mike is a great singer, he should sing lead on more phish songs...

  • agree.

  • Phish: great music!

  • mike looks like sucha nerd.... but they are still really sick

  • I would say that mike looks significantly less nerdy than usual. No day-glow, no elastic waist pants, etc.

  • yeah but trey looks unusually hairy..

  • Like how we uses the Wah pedal at the beginning, little variety!!! Sick welcome back boys!!!

  • This DVD is amongst their best work. Especially disk 2. It's one constant song, no stops. DWD->Mike's Song->Simple->Hydrogen->Weekapaug. So good!

  • this is a good song. i really like this band but they are so nerdy. ha

  • What does this even mean? Are you refering to Hunter S. Thompson??? If you are, then no... this isn't him...

  • i gotta get this dvd

  • sweeeeet

  • this dvd is fucking sick

  • Oh yes indeed man... blew my mind. Watched it before we hit up a Phil Lesh & Friends/ Allman Brothers show back in October and it really hit the spot, man.

  • this show was the shit.... definitely in my TOP 5 shows i've seen (outta 74 - 1st night of Hampton will be my 75th!!)....

  • @fluffhead717 ive only seen one phish show, but i got a GREAT one! Hershey, PA 6-13-10 opener-gotta jibboo, chalk dust torture, fluffhead, funky bitch, runaway jim, NICU, horn, its ice, bouncing around the room, sparkle, split open and melt, Set 2 drowned, tweezer, twist, piper, free, wading, YEM, encore jimi hendrix bold as love

awesome show- my friend told me it was the greatest he's ever seen, and hes been to a ton, including festival 8

  • @KDog9700 damn! bold as love must have been AWESOME!

  • @YellowJullyfish you have no idea.... mind blown.

  • @KDog9700 I was at that show, was my 3rd show, it was an insane show

  • @MrCinCity1 awesome or what?!?!?

  • @KDog9700 one of the best experiences of my life

  • so tight. the slow seague and then the bombs. unabomber mike g. was on it. til VA.

  • Iv'e said it a hundred times before, and i'll say it again. Mike Gordon is just the freaking man. He rules.

  • he really is

  • so fucking chill

  • gotta be one of the dankest segues ever

  • It used to be so positive, now it's all clouded in negativity. The kids now dont get it, they are too hyped up on techno based crap and they are all ADD.

  • Agreed. I can't stand any of the current Top 40 garbage. This is real music.

  • Sick- does Trey have hair coming out of his neck?

  • Trey's neck is made out of hair.

  • Look at 2:20 into it. He has hair coming out of his neck.

  • Shaving must a bitch for him!

  • He's the wolfman's brother.

  • He's the wolfman's brother
