  • thanks! needed that vid!

  • "true tinder fungus" or "chaga" has a very high medicinal value. look it up.

  • @felixchylde Correct. We make a very healthy tea of it here in Russia.

  • the UP is a pretty cool place. love all those black squirrels runnin around up there

  • Dave, could you see your way to doing a short video on the uses of Birch polypore (razor-strop fungus)? In my area it's almost impossible to find chaga, but I have located some razor-strop

  • Your so lucky to live in an area where you can get out and about away from city life. Love the videos too, keep them up!

  • I like I like

  • Does anyone know what ax that was?

  • @trevor6744 I think it was the Pathfinder Scout Hawk. He has a video introducing it, and it looks pretty rugged to me.

  • @WiserStealth no... defiantly not a hawk.

  • @trevor6744 Wetterling.

  • Hey,

Where in the u.p. are you playing in the woods? Chaga tea is one of my favorite wild teas...take care..

  • Hey Dave, could you please tell me where you got the wool hooded pullover your wearing?

  • @shark61111 check his previous yurt vids, he gives a link. I think its fox something.

  • I think Im in heaven....looks like my kind of place!

  • Hey there. If i am not mistaking, this mushroom is used as a tea and have a lot more antioxidants than blueberries. I make a tea and use it with my coffee.

  • what axe where you using in this video ?

  • So awesome to see you in my backyard Dave! I love all your vids and I love living in the U.P.!

Keep up the good work brother,

    Ω†

  • Dave - Does the fungus have to be Chaga (from Birch ) to work as tinder? Does Chaga only grow on Birch? Will other shelf fungus (from Pine) I find in the Eastern Woodlands work as tinder?

  • @ShoreScout Hey mate, all kinds of fungus will work, including shelf fungus. I've even seen certain types of ball shaped fungus that have growth rings inside work as tinder. Some fungus, if dry enough, will work straight off the tree or log whereas others need to be dried, and others need to be charred. Your best bet will be to grab some and try for yourself. One thing I would be careful about is inhaling too much of the smoke. I may be corrected there though...

  • @AussiePreppers Thanks for the reply.. Will give it a try.

  • Fomes fomentarius - which grows primarily on birch and beech trees, back in yee olden days they also used the chaga for water proofing lady's and gentleman's hats, shoes and stuff.

  • I love the this guy! Hes got cool tunes

  • Hey dave i was wondering if you could make a video on how to make deer tallo or if u already have can u tell me which video. O and lovin the journal of the yurt vidds

  • Dave love your video's. You've mentioned a video with your .22 revolver So far I can't find that video. Was hoping you or another sub could tell me which video that was. Thank's for the video's brother.

  • I downloaded Adblock Plus and it blocked the Youtube ads. So much better.

  • cool i'm guessing that i could probly find this stuff in the northern part of the LP?

  • Dave,

I just found a common man axe at Menards. The Yardworks 2.25 axe with hickory handle. Just letting you all know you can get a cheap axe for 15 bucks. I'm going to test it out today.

  • Hey Dave I just got your bhk pathfinder knife but I would like to get one more really nice bushcraft knife I have a ton of Moras am considering the halibis bushtool have any thoughts on this knife by chance!!!

  • Dave, to let you know, my user name has changed, it was trickywoo. I deleted my google account but reopened my youtube account cause I can't miss your video's!

  • Dave I strive to be like u

  • Dave, I have heard that you can make a tea from chaga as well.

  • @beeman715 I make tea from it and drink it often. It's supposed to be one of the highest anti-oxidant foods available on the planet. Doesn't taste great but it doesn't taste bad either.

  • Hey Dave, can you think about making a playlist with just the videos YOU did? I just get the most out of your videos because your way of explaining things, the detail you go into, and your camera work are all pretty bomber.

  • Love the videos.. where do you recommend getting a small axe like yours

  • @alzathoth When implementing a selective harvesting system yellow/white birch trees with clinker [timber] fungus are considered unsuitable growing stock. This means that a tree inflicted with this fungus is on its way out and will soon die. To answer your question I would think that removing the fungus won't make a matter. It shouldn't speed up or slow down the death of the tree. A potential issue you might encounter would be if you sunk the axe through the cambium when knocking it off the tree.

  • Is that the small forest axe or the bigger one?

  • we need you to put some real videos up dammit

  • Dave,

Quick question. Did you name your school after John C. Fremont. I was just doing some research on Jim Bridger, Kit Carson and John C. Fremont. Learned a great deal from these three men.

  • good imformation I also like to use the bark off dead birch trees for fire starting

  • does removing the fungus damage the tree at all?

  • Good to see some videos of where I learned to hunt, camp, and fish. Thanks Dave.

  • Cody needs to be in the video in barefeet !

  • Chaga also makes great tea with the added benefit of anticancer properties.

  • Is (Chaga) Birch canker?

  • @bobaloosb yes, it is Chaga. Makes excellent tea which is very healthy for you man. And after making your tea, dont discard the fungus, just dry it out and you have tinder again.....

  • @shane0858

Thank you...Is pine knot as good as puck wood?

  • @bobaloosb

    *punk wood

  • Is this stuff similar to horseshoe mushrooms? I have lots of that in my area.

  • which video is about beeswax? i want to know the uses for it

  • thanks for another great vid man love what ur doing here on youtube this stuff realy gives it depth and not just all crap

  • Hello Dave. I've also heart that chaga also has medischenale effects, is that true ??

  • I should have read the comments first now I feel like a idiot. Lol

  • Dave, that's also known as chaga. It has a lot of medicinal purposes. Some say it helps prevent/ cure cancer and it is consumed as a tea. Hope that helps you some brother.

  • Chaga is the bomb!! nothing like it on the planet. Gods gift to man. Cure all tea! and the only natural thing that works in a fire piston. takes a spark like char cloth. Chaga is my true tender fungus! about time Dave. Happy traveling and good hunting my friend

  • what axe are you using?

  • Why is there Commercials now?

  • @MuskratBushcraft It is a YT Thing brother

  • @wildernessoutfitters yea they pay you

  • @wildernessoutfitters It might be worth considering moving the videos over to Dailymotion. Youtube is going downhill.

  • @MuskratBushcraft it lets them get some income from the vids, surely you've got no problem with Dave getting a little money for all he does by our watching a few seconds of commercials? I hate commercials, but at least this is going to Dave & not some greedy manipulative TV network scum bags.

  • @MuskratBushcraft making some $ on the vids is ok...

  • @MuskratBushcraft Democracy (Sorry), Corperatisation

  • @MuskratBushcraft so they can earn more money to give us

  • @MuskratBushcraft

There are free ad blocker plugins for most common browsers

  • @MuskratBushcraft get adblock to firefox and get rid of it

  • @MuskratBushcraft where?

  • @MuskratBushcraft Try AdBlock Plus and enjoy YT without the commercials :)

  • @MuskratBushcraft get firefox and adblock plus. no more ads.

  • Great piece of chaga, ...so cool!

  • ur new vid is gone what happened? dave

  • Nice one Dave!

thx for showing and sharing this!

Chaga is great stuff for firelighting, but also great for making a tea out of it and very healthy too!

    cheers from Austria

    Mike

  • @survivalmike They sell that stuff for a lot of money on ebay, it's like buying gold. I hear from my friends up North that it is a big seller. Costs about $20 bucks for 1 lb.

  • I'll have to check for that on our birch. thanks

  • I tell ya, that Birch forest looked like Heaven.... Another great video Dave, Chaga is amazing stuff!

  • The birch tree is one of the most useful trees all year around, and its often overlooked for its uses..

  • nixe

  • Are you going to do any vids on making chaga tea?

Thanks for the great video Dave.

  • Hey Dave, i live in michigan. can tinder fungus be found all year round or only during the winter?

  • Does a lot of resin reside on the tinder fungus?

  • Thanks for the video Dave. I was wondering how you've been liking your Empire Wool Boreal shirt (that you're wearing in this video).

    Thanks

  • @skrbeleven This is a Lester River Shirt but it is awesome!

  • nice catch!

  • Can this be found in the New England area? There's plenty of birch where I live.

  • @WildernessOutfitters, Great video man. Wanted to tell you thanks for the heads up with the Pathfinder knife, I'm already getting it tomorrow.....he'll ya. Hopefully I'll get my knife from Abe E. too. Thanks Dave, Phil (NJ)

  • When is Dual Survival Season 2 coming out on DVD?

  • Hey Dave, Great video. Does the Chaga or tinder fungus have any medicnal value? If so will have video on that?

  • The outside black part is loaded with nutrients just like the insiide for those interested in the medicinal tea Chaga is famous for. A couple of tablespoons of either or one of both make a great medicinal tea, as a decoction second to none for nutrients and anti-carcinogenic compounds.

  • there's more wild edables than there are mushroom's .

  • Seeings it's a fungus, is it not a mushroom. Could it be eaten if need be or is it poisonous? I was thinking the soft part could make a tea, maybe? This is why I don't pick mushrooms. I wish my dad had taught me. He always said he would do it. I love wild mushrooms.

  • keep on keep'n on brother we'll have to cut a trail together one day.

  • Thats awesome Dave! can I find Chaga in middle Tennessee?

  • Dave, Is finding Chaga an option in Southern Ohio? I believe I've seen this before, but didn't know what it could be or am I confusing it with some other type of fungus in the mid to southern regions of Ohio?

  • This stuff is awesome! Turned out there was some on a tree right next to a dock we fish from. Took it home and tried it. MAN! One good spark and this stuff is off to the races and burns a WHILE!!

    Thanks, Dave!

  • I didn't know that you need to dry it out. Thanks for the video, Dave.

  • Good stuff thanks for posting Dave!

  • Wow Dave, I sure wish that I had known you were coming to the U.P. It would have been great to find a way to meet you.

Thanks for another great video....but you didn't tell us how to know when the Tinder Fungus is dry enough to use.

  • @Cayoot Will be shooting a follow up vid from the Yurt next week.

  • Hm, tinder fungus, who knew?

  • Very Cool!

  • Great video it's nice to see that you are still putting out videos from the road, I was worried we wouldn't see many more bushcraft videos while you were on the road. Keep 'em coming! Always watching

  • @SephEternal Many missed the point of the road videos, I am not going out of my way to do them and stop everything else just taking an extra day here and there to stop on the way to places I was already going to do some shoots with other tubers thats all. Still making videos just the same as always. have 2 SAN shoots scheduled next 2 weekends straight.

  • @wildernessoutfitters Awesome, I'm glad to hear it. Since I've found your channel it's all I ever watch, don't even need cable anymore lol Can't wait to see the new SAN episodes!

  • @wildernessoutfitters Funny enough, I recently attended a presentation on NTFPs and heard a story about the tinder fungus. Apparently a local mushroom seller had been removing the black outer coating before selling his products. This enhanced the appearance of the fungus. It was later found that the outside of the tinder fungus, he had been removing had a higher concentration of anti-oxidants than the interior. He was reducing profits by limiting weight and reducing the health benefits.

  • I don't know i use an old blue still 7 inch blade butcher knife it work's great.

  • Dave if you can find some ceder its great tender.

  • U got a new axe!

  • Yea that makes some great tea, I am drinking some right now.

  • I read a bit about chaga on a few web site's and it sounds like it has a lot of medical use's as a infusion, maybe worth looking at

  • @SirMidnightBravehear Talked about all this and showed the knife in a vid just the other day brother, it is a plain jane leather belt sheath to keep cost down.

  • @edv1777 You use it as tinder for starting fires once properly prepared.

  • Thank's man.

  • Dave me and my kids have been working on primitive skill's together and learning alot .buy watching your youtube video's

  • Does this grow only on Birch trees?

  • @edv1777 It's used for tinder when starting fires. It catches a spark very well. I think it has some medicinal properties as well, but I don't know about them.

  • @wildernessoutfitters did you ever find out what part of the UP you were in.

  • Good topic Dave 👍

    Chuck30100

  • Man I have been waiting for this and other vids as to what you can do with this stuff.

  • You go Dude!! .... ok... now I'm jealous.

  • Chaga is great. I drink chaga tea all the time... highly medicinal.

  • Now I know what I'm looking for! Would this stuff work in a fire piston? For that matter what do you think of fire pistons as a piece of kit?

  • I would like to get a PATHFINDER knife how do i get one of those.

  • @david2011621 go to our website link is below video

  • mi rocks hope u are haveing fun up there

  • The black outside layer has a higher amount of the beneficial betulinic acid, which has anti-retroviral, anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. So, don't discard it. Add it back when you make chaga tea.

  • nice score dave!

  • Hope you enjoyed your stay in the UP!! :D

Today is only 10 degrees... the last two days have been a little warmer...

    Have a safe trip back!

  • @mrb0mbay Yes

  • are there any heath issues that can result from harvesting tinder fungus, being a fungus and all.

  • @RYDERkN

no, chaga actually has several medicinal uses. im sure you can find out more about it if you do a quick google search for it.

    Hope this helps!

  • @AccuracyMarked Its use is in the name, "TINDER" Fungus. Dry it out and its full of oils and what not and is great for starting fires.

  • Good Info My friend

  • Awesome, THANKS!

  • Nice. Sure wish we had some snow over here, it's supposed to be winter and it's been 50+ degrees all december and january. ridiculous.
