Dave, could you see your way to doing a short video on the uses of Birch polypore (razor-strop fungus)? In my area it's almost impossible to find chaga, but I have located some razor-strop
Hey there. If i am not mistaking, this mushroom is used as a tea and have a lot more antioxidants than blueberries. I make a tea and use it with my coffee.
Dave - Does the fungus have to be Chaga (from Birch ) to work as tinder? Does Chaga only grow on Birch? Will other shelf fungus (from Pine) I find in the Eastern Woodlands work as tinder?
@ShoreScout Hey mate, all kinds of fungus will work, including shelf fungus. I've even seen certain types of ball shaped fungus that have growth rings inside work as tinder. Some fungus, if dry enough, will work straight off the tree or log whereas others need to be dried, and others need to be charred. Your best bet will be to grab some and try for yourself. One thing I would be careful about is inhaling too much of the smoke. I may be corrected there though...
Fomes fomentarius - which grows primarily on birch and beech trees, back in yee olden days they also used the chaga for water proofing lady's and gentleman's hats, shoes and stuff.
Hey dave i was wondering if you could make a video on how to make deer tallo or if u already have can u tell me which video. O and lovin the journal of the yurt vidds
Dave love your video's. You've mentioned a video with your .22 revolver So far I can't find that video. Was hoping you or another sub could tell me which video that was. Thank's for the video's brother.
I just found a common man axe at Menards. The Yardworks 2.25 axe with hickory handle. Just letting you all know you can get a cheap axe for 15 bucks. I'm going to test it out today.
Hey Dave I just got your bhk pathfinder knife but I would like to get one more really nice bushcraft knife I have a ton of Moras am considering the halibis bushtool have any thoughts on this knife by chance!!!
Dave, to let you know, my user name has changed, it was trickywoo. I deleted my google account but reopened my youtube account cause I can't miss your video's!
@beeman715 I make tea from it and drink it often. It's supposed to be one of the highest anti-oxidant foods available on the planet. Doesn't taste great but it doesn't taste bad either.
Hey Dave, can you think about making a playlist with just the videos YOU did? I just get the most out of your videos because your way of explaining things, the detail you go into, and your camera work are all pretty bomber.
@alzathoth When implementing a selective harvesting system yellow/white birch trees with clinker [timber] fungus are considered unsuitable growing stock. This means that a tree inflicted with this fungus is on its way out and will soon die. To answer your question I would think that removing the fungus won't make a matter. It shouldn't speed up or slow down the death of the tree. A potential issue you might encounter would be if you sunk the axe through the cambium when knocking it off the tree.
Quick question. Did you name your school after John C. Fremont. I was just doing some research on Jim Bridger, Kit Carson and John C. Fremont. Learned a great deal from these three men.
@bobaloosb yes, it is Chaga. Makes excellent tea which is very healthy for you man. And after making your tea, dont discard the fungus, just dry it out and you have tinder again.....
good to know dave! i did not know that thanks alot! living in weastern massachusetts fire this time of the year is more than "just" important. its a must!

Dave, that's also known as chaga. It has a lot of medicinal purposes. Some say it helps prevent/ cure cancer and it is consumed as a tea. Hope that helps you some brother.
heey Dave great video but isn't it ileagle to harvest them becuase i live in the Netherlands and here it is ileagle soory for my terrible english im Dutch
Chaga is the bomb!! nothing like it on the planet. Gods gift to man. Cure all tea! and the only natural thing that works in a fire piston. takes a spark like char cloth. Chaga is my true tender fungus! about time Dave. Happy traveling and good hunting my friend
@MuskratBushcraft it lets them get some income from the vids, surely you've got no problem with Dave getting a little money for all he does by our watching a few seconds of commercials? I hate commercials, but at least this is going to Dave & not some greedy manipulative TV network scum bags.
@survivalmike They sell that stuff for a lot of money on ebay, it's like buying gold. I hear from my friends up North that it is a big seller. Costs about $20 bucks for 1 lb.
From what I've learned about Chaga it seems it's not a very sustainable fungus to harvest in the wild. If you're gonna do this I wish you'd at least mention sustainable harvesting practices.
@WildernessOutfitters, Great video man. Wanted to tell you thanks for the heads up with the Pathfinder knife, I'm already getting it tomorrow.....he'll ya. Hopefully I'll get my knife from Abe E. too. Thanks Dave, Phil (NJ)
The outside black part is loaded with nutrients just like the insiide for those interested in the medicinal tea Chaga is famous for. A couple of tablespoons of either or one of both make a great medicinal tea, as a decoction second to none for nutrients and anti-carcinogenic compounds.
Seeings it's a fungus, is it not a mushroom. Could it be eaten if need be or is it poisonous? I was thinking the soft part could make a tea, maybe? This is why I don't pick mushrooms. I wish my dad had taught me. He always said he would do it. I love wild mushrooms.
Dave, Is finding Chaga an option in Southern Ohio? I believe I've seen this before, but didn't know what it could be or am I confusing it with some other type of fungus in the mid to southern regions of Ohio?
This stuff is awesome! Turned out there was some on a tree right next to a dock we fish from. Took it home and tried it. MAN! One good spark and this stuff is off to the races and burns a WHILE!!
Great video it's nice to see that you are still putting out videos from the road, I was worried we wouldn't see many more bushcraft videos while you were on the road. Keep 'em coming! Always watching
@SephEternal Many missed the point of the road videos, I am not going out of my way to do them and stop everything else just taking an extra day here and there to stop on the way to places I was already going to do some shoots with other tubers thats all. @wildernessoutfitters Awesome, I'm glad to hear it. Since I've found your channel it's all I ever watch, don't even need cable anymore lol Can't wait to see the new SAN episodes!
@wildernessoutfitters Funny enough, I recently attended a presentation on NTFPs and heard a story about the tinder fungus. Apparently a local mushroom seller had been removing the black outer coating before selling his products. This enhanced the appearance of the fungus. It was later found that the outside of the tinder fungus, he had been removing had a higher concentration of anti-oxidants than the interior. He was reducing profits by limiting weight and reducing the health benefits.

@SirMidnightBravehear Talked about all this and showed the knife in a vid just the other day brother, it is a plain jane leather belt sheath to keep cost down.
@edv1777 It's used for tinder when starting fires. It catches a spark very well. I think it has some medicinal properties as well, but I don't know about them.
The black outside layer has a higher amount of the beneficial betulinic acid, which has anti-retroviral, anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. So, don't discard it. Add it back when you make chaga tea.
thanks! needed that vid!

Now I know what I'm looking for! Would this stuff work in a fire piston? For that matter what do you think of fire pistons as a piece of kit?

The black outside layer has a higher amount of the beneficial betulinic acid, which has anti-retroviral, anti-malarial, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. So, don't discard it. Add it back when you make chaga tea.
