  • One of the best baselines ever.

    Really good job.

  • Crash! Bang! Wallop! What a video!!

  • Never mind.. I've just found your 'explained' video.. -tut- silly me..xD

  • If you have them, can you send me the tabs, pleease?

  • Pretty good that

  • @colinporter1968

    Cheers!

  • Again, Fantastic!!

  • I love this...in a way

  • @TomthatiscalledTom

    Thanks...in a way....

  • Incredible job! I am a big fan of Gary Numan and obviously he has had two incredible bass guitar players work with him in Mick Karn and Pino Palladino. My question to you is if you had to choose, who was more genious in there playing. I find then both mind-blowing but with a slight edge to Karn. Thanks.

  • @killjoke

    Thanks so much!

    :)

I think they're very different, really. Pino is amuch more competent sideman than karn, who always dominated whatever he played on....my preference is for Mick, though1

    :)

  • Love your Mick Karn vids...I don't think I knew Pino Played this bass line...shame on me

  • @pawnsacrifice1

Didn't know myself either for a long time :)

Thanks for commenting mate, much appreciated.

  • wicked!

  • Excellent...! Thanks for uploading.

    Best wishes.

  • your videos are bad and you should feel bad

  • that was textbook.

  • Sounds like you have it run through a chorus pedal as well? Sounds like the chorus is definitely "wet" and turned up.

  • @tall32guy

On the Zoom, there's an octave + chorus setting, which I may have used. Sounds like I did alright.

  • Does anyone know how this synthesizer like bass sound is achieved? A particular effect pedal or EQ setting? Thanks.

  • @MrKareem33

    Hi

Its an octaver effect. The one in this video is a cheap Zoom 506 pedal with an octaver effect on.

basically what an octaver does is generate a not one octave below the one you're playing and blend the two signals together.

  • Sounds good!

  • @Notofthisworld13

A Paddy who knows Numan! Well I never!

    :)

    Thanks for the comment dude!

  • Spiceworld!

    hahaha thanks!

  • This is just so tight and spot on, great stuff

  • @lunny74

    Thanks so much

  • You know if you are a bassist you gotta do this one. Jammin stuff. I'm surprised you were able to get that sound out of a bass with frets. It seems to me it would be easier on a fretless.

  • @Kangsryche

I've already addressed this in earlier comments mate - its a LINED fretless. Otherwise people start complaining they can't see where my hands are

  • @mindhead2005 My bad, cuz. I usually just read a few comments surrounding the topics. Just saying good job.

  • @Kangsryche

Thank you very very much for that!

  • Brilliant.

  • Spot on mate - that's brilliant mate.

  • brill

  • Nice playing mindhead2005. I've got a Jaydee. Hardly comes out of the case these days.

  • @56656544ghgcgfhyiy4e

Ah thats a shame - you should dig it out for the craic!

Thanks a mill for the compliment.

    Mick

  • Do you play fretless too ??

  • @nobbilc

the bass in this video IS fretless.

  • Comment removed

  • @mindhead2005 Oh right...I cld see the dots and lines and.thought they were frets too. Accustomed to my mate's fretless which is bare

  • @nobbilc

I have a bass like that but when I do vids with it no-one can tell what fret I'm on and they start complaining!!

    :)

  • @mindhead2005 Right. Of course. : )

  • @nobbilc

I prefer lined anyway. If you're doing a session, no-one really wants you faffing about trying to ht the notes dead on while the clock is ticking!!

    :)

  • was it not mick karn from japan's bassline?

  • @cyclotronjets

No cyclo, though it sounds quite like him in places, its Pino Palladino.

  • great! i love this song

  • My favorite bass line ever. Pino is one of my bass heroes.

  • Makes it look easy! Nice one man. Also, if anyone dislikes, I've got a jet of molten bramley apple coming their way!

  • Excellent job, man; You make it look easy. Can I just ask what you used to learn it? I've been looking for a decent tab for a while now.

  • @Nirkbirk

Tabs are no good for training your ear

I just picked it out from the recording by ear.

  • @mindhead2005

Totally agree. The internet generation are always on the look out for the quick fix, but if you want to be a better musician, you need to train your ear.

    Good job!

  • you have too much talent to need luck mate..nice one.

  • @sinister066

    Hahaha Thanks man!

  • @mindhead2005 no probs mate...u were a joy to watch.

  • @rightfredsdead

    er...no...

    :)

Always think of Alan at these times!!

  • Nice dude! Can't help but think of Alan Partridge rocking around his caravan to this.

  • WOAH! that's english for stop a horse

  • Crikey! That's tough and you nail it quite sweetly. Cheers for posting.

  • Nicely done. Love those slides!

  • absolutely fantastic!

  • Gidday mate - are those open A strings after the super funky little opening ??starting about 22 secs in ...... bit hard to hear...? Cheers

  • @kiwijohn01

The A's are open mate, yes

    Thanks for watching

The whole thing is explained in one of my other vids though:

  • mindhead2005.hahaha sorry apologies,I must have got your video mixed up with another one!.I watched your video again, you played it really well.

I like your humour!:o) have a great day and thanx again for the great video, very nice.;o)

  • @rockcityaudio

Yes, just like I'm playing in this video

    A fretless bass

  • Bravo !!

  • superb!

  • Reminds me how bad I want a fretless bass, good work.

  • its funny..i keep coming back to see how the fk you do that!

  • bloody brilliant mate...brilliant!

  • Its a langley d-tuner, specifically for Steinberger L series instruments!

    M

  • @mindhead2005 I'm an artist...but you seriously got me thinkin' about pickin up a bass!...I,ve been puttin it off 4 years. Please keep postin' your vids...I'll be back 4 more lessons ;0)

  • Hi mate

Nice bassline, ive got a hohner jack full body and wanted to know is that the d tuner on the the of the head?

  • well done matey....loved it

  • Absolutely Class Mate! Did see this first on Alan Partridge and thought i'm learning that and thanks to you have! Legend!

  • hahah

    Thanks amte!

  • Mr Partridge..were from the inland revenue...NO YOUR NOT!!....yes we are.

  • I love that he takes the air bass off when he lets them in!!

  • i always thought the bass line was Mick Karn's

well you learn something new every quarter century i suppose

  • your rate of learning is better than mine then. I'm averaging three decades I reckon!

    :)

  • brilliantly played, but not really a lesson.

  • Lesson is now up.

    Thanks

  • Nailed it again!

    Excellent playing, sir!!

  • Nice work :)

  • Always a favorite. Great job.

  • Dude, well done. Grooviest tune!

  • truely awesome dude :) kick arse track too superb bass riff \m/

  • still sweet!

  • Thanks man.

I'll be doing some more soon.

  • Awesome !! I have always been a huge fan of the bass line for this killer numan tune!

  • Can we see / hear it on a fretless bass? That would be awsome!

  • hahaha

It IS a fretless bass dude.

  • It's NOT a fretless bass--it's a HEADLESS Steinberger.

    Good sound! Nice job.

  • Its both headless and fretless

    its an XL2LF

Its got lines on it which might be confusing you.

I also have an unlined fretless which is in another video here.

  • Ah, thank you for clarifying. The lines did confuse me!

  • No probs Nick

You're not teh first. I did a series of gigs with a band before the guitarist twigged it was fretless. He'd been wondering how i got the sound beforehand!

    :)

  • Nice to see a fellow country man and fellow bassist perform so well

  • Thanks mate!

  • You should make more video about Numan's bassline!

  • Bravo......!!

  • That was awesome! And he makes it look so easy!

  • hahaaa

    Thanks man!

  • Awesome. There are so many great bass lines on. . . I guess the majority of Numan's albums. . .

    5 X 5. . .

  • Great playing!!!!!! Sound just like it.

  • really good! nice finger work.

  • Wow, well done!!! xx

  • Excellent work, wish i could get that sound out of my synths lol.

  • fucking brilliant! numan needs to sign you up for the I assasin retro tour :D

hey if you feel like it, why not try out some other i assasin songs basslines? :)

  • Awesome, Awesome. I'm going to send this video out to everyone on my page, I love it and I think it deserves more views. It's a great lesson for bass and guitar players.

  • I love 'Music for chamelons', and that was a mighty fine rendition. I used to listen to that on repeat.when I was a kid. I bought a secondhand single of it. Do you like Jah Wobble's bass playing. I have been listening to 'Alsema Dub' by Bill Laswell and Jah Wobble on repeat today. It is on my channel playlist, have a listen when you have chance. Thanks for the vids!

  • sweet!

  • ...very good!

  • That sounds amazing dood. How did you get that tone? i have a fender jazz bass, a bass pod xt live, and a peavy mark 3 head unity and peavy cab. Any suggestions?

  • yep. Lose the pod for a start. All those meulators are just fancy eq units. they actually get in the way of the true tone of the bass and amp.

I'm just using a zoom 506 for the chorus.

The peavey stuff is what I use, but i'd prefer 10's to a 15.

And the real tone comes from the Steinberger. Its the graphite.

  • any chance you could do this video again but a lot slower?

  • Soon as my arm is out of its cast, yes!!

  • Tasty playing there, great tone too.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Mr Partridge it's the inland revenue. Sorry just had to say it. That's fantastic work man - are there any tabs for this online because I'd love to learn it myself.

  • Don't bother with tabs, mate. you're just taking someone else's woo=rd for it that they're right, and a lot of the time, they're utterly wrong.

get a programme like the Amazing Slow Downer and slow the piece down til you can pick out the notes yourself.

  • Righto

  • brilliant, that is absolutely spot on, just like the original!

  • LOL!

thanks a million mate, that means a lot!

    Mick

  • well done, I always liked that bassline

  • Great job mate!....John in America

  • Thank you John!

  • What #key is it in?

  • E I think.

  • Cool, my 2nd favourite Numan bassline - great playing - well done ;o) If you are up for requests, my fav Pino bassline is on We Take Mystery....go on!!

  • oh...tricky!

    maybe...

    :)

  • wow, you pulled it off briliantly!

  • Blushing now Mark, ta!

    Love the Steinbergers.

Actually, one of my fretted ones is pretty special.

its serial number 11, and was used on the original Live Aid concert in 1985...to play "Do They Know Its Christmas"

  • SUPERB!!!!

Brilliant tone, fantastic playing, and a STEINBERGER!!!!!

  • love it great sound.

  • You should have played in '83 instead of that bloated lardy bag of ego, Joe Hubbard...

    Great Playing!! :-)
