Such a powerful fore and backhand amazing how she won the tournament in Luxembourg and yesterday her first match on WTA Tour Championships in Istanbul (6:2/6:2) against US Open Champion Samatha Stosur. @mrminh170194 yeah serena just kicked it up a gear and that's a gear that azarenka doesn't quite have yet. so while azarenka was still fighting after 4-0 in the 2nd set serena was heightening her game, hitting winners and not missing. the third set was just cruise control.
A great encounter. Massive power hitting from both ladies. In the end Serena simply out stayed Vika. But well done to both for putting up such mesmerising performances.
I think Azarenka needs a stronger serve to get to the next level. The girl is obviously talented. I also feel Azarenka needs to work on her mental attitude. If you look at the video she lost confidence after Serena won the second set. Azarenka needs to work on the mental aspect of the game to become a champion.
The level Serena asked Azarenka to play was so ridiculously high in the third set. It's so amazing to see that Serena remains the standard for shotmaking and hitting on the WTA tour 15 years since she first started on it. The other women only dream of hitting the ball that well, especially when it matters most.

Azarenka's grunt lasts way too long. She should be given a warning. Same with Sharapova for volume.

@mrminh170194 yeah serena just kicked it up a gear and that's a gear that azarenka doesn't quite have yet. so while azarenka was still fighting after 4-0 in the 2nd set serena was heightening her game, hitting winners and not missing. the third set was just cruise control.

I think Azarenka needs a stronger serve to get to the next level. The girl is obviously talented. I also feel Azarenka needs to work on her mental attitude. If you look at the video she lost confidence after Serena won the second set. Azarenka needs to work on the mental aspect of the game to become a champion.

The level Serena asked Azarenka to play was so ridiculously high in the third set. It's so amazing to see that Serena remains the standard for shotmaking and hitting on the WTA tour 15 years since she first started on it. The other women only dream of hitting the ball that well, especially when it matters most.

Azarenka really needs to improve her serve if she wants to get to the next level. She's got the talent but the serve and her fitness in relation to mental strength is an issue for her.

I disagree about Azarenka being a great player she is a good player but she lacks mental toughness. I also believe Azarenka is NOT in the best physical shape possible. Victoria always has some kind of physical injury she needs to dedicate herself to fitness. I am not saying Victoria is out of shape I am saying that as a top female athlete she needs to take her fitness to the top level. If Victoria was feeling well physically it might help her mentally.

This is the difference between Venus and Serena Venus would of lost this kind of a match. Serena just has a killer instinct she HATES LOSING but that's what makes Serena such a great winner. Serena wants to win so badly and she never EVER gives up. I knew that Azarenka had to win it Serena wasn't going to lose it.

There is absolutely NO Player in the WTA today like Serena. PERIOD. Any definition of mental toughness + ability should have her picture beside it. WOW!!
Every WTA player at the 2011 AO are estatic that Serena is injured and not playing. But the fans miss her Big Time!!!

Azarenka crowds the baseline and takes the ball so early and takes time away from you. She's able to open up the court and put the ball away. But her second serve is suspect and her movement gets her in trouble, like in this match

@TestYear She is confirmed on the AO list of players and she announced as the #5 seed. So, unless she gets injured again from now until the 16th, she will be playing.

@swissmaestro45 Ugh, I love Serena so much that I have to endure this sadness that hasn't even happened yet, and after that, it's only pretty much Miami that Serena cares about before the French, and she didn't even play that this year either, so she's gonna need some points to make up for her complete absence at the AO next year (losing 2000 points) to get a top 8 seeding for the French at least. Anyways, I like Clijsters, but I'd like to see Venus win the AO for once, if she even plays...

I can't fathom not seeing Serena until April next year. It really saddens me. The last half of the year showed what it will be like without the sisters and it looks boring and horrible.

Man, Serena at the Australian Open is such a sight to see, but thanks to whatever drunken asshole who dropped that glass bottle in that restaurant, we tennis fans are going to be deprived of that. I'm so deeply dissapointed by this I won't bother watching most of the women's matches, definitely no 3AM sessions for me this time around.

@swissmaestro45 Lol, just like they were free to run amuck at the US Open with awful serving and service breaks running out the wazoo (i.e. Dementieva v. Stosur, Clijsters v. Stosur). Azarenka in particular should send Serena a thank you basket because she's lost to Serena 3 years in a row at the Australian Open.

@wiseguyknowsit Everytime I root for Venus lately she ends up blowing the match in the most disappointing way possible, like her quarterfinal against Li Na this year. She also hasn't been past the quarters since 2003. It'll be great if she does win it, but I'm not holding my breath.
