Most of the people who criticize the English dubs don't even understand Japanese, and is only reading the subtitles and, to an extent, only imagining how the words are said in their mind. The "original voices" argument is nothing more than a disguised version of the "I prefer Japanese voices" argument, and that is strictly preference. No need to insult dubs and indirectly insult those who like English dubs.

@dswjeong91 I see it more as wanting to watch it as it was meant to be watched rather than an alternate version i.e. English dub. The Japanese voice industry is huge in Japan so it's taken a lot more seriously over there. I am learning Japanese and often watch things raw for learning and I for me the emotions are conveyed much better in Japanese. Whether or not you watch things like Family Guy or The Simpsons, imagine watching them in another language how unfunny they would be.

@BrokenClocks08 Well, specific voice is not tied so tightly to an animated character that it has to be that person or it doesn't work. But honestly, I have to ask: What's the difference? Whether you're reading it at the bottom of the screen or it's coming verbally from the characters, the dialogue is being translated into English. Unless you know Japanese, the jokes, puns, etc. will be lost in translation anyway. Subtitles do not change that.

I once heard that even the Japanese liked the English audio for Fullmetal Alchemist better than their own because it was just so good. But then again, it may be because of the fact that it's not their native language. This holds true for us as well. Even if you're learning Japanese, you won't be able to understand the nature of the dialogues fully.

@dswjeong91 With the Ghibli films I understand them because it isn't complex Japanese, things like Japanese news is a challenge for me though, so I don't at all appreciate such an unsupportive statement as I won't be able to understand the nature of the dialouges. I'm not insulting the English dub at all, there are dubs that I actually like: a few of the dubs for these Ghibli films are quite good, though I didn't like the Ponyo or My Neighbour Totoro ones.

Vic Mignogna is one of the examples of good English voice actors, in my opinion. But my point is that it's irrational to hate on every single English dubs in general. This woman, which I agree with you, is a completely different story. She's just one of those people who fail to appreciate other culture

I absolutely LOVE Hayao Miyazaki and his films. However, I found Ponyo to be my least favorite out of all of them. Ponyo wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't what I had expected it to be. Especially comapred to Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's Delivery Service, My neighbor Totoro, or Howls Moving Castle.
