I think most people woud rand Bork V Mcenroe and Federer V nadal as the two classice rivalries but I think Connors V mcEnroe was in ways the most intense of all. Both American, both spiky.
Whoa I've been looking for full matches of either one of these guys, and now I get to watch them against each other. Thank you so very much for posting this!. Is there anywhere I can get matches like this on DVD? I'm dying to get my hands on some.
At Wimbledon they did not have any umbrellas during the court changes then to shield the players from the sun. Even though it was very very hot, as on that day in London in July 1984, around 32 degrees C in the shade. Something that has changed...Also look at the linespeople and the umpire! They were all wearing their jackets despite the heat. Nowadays if there is just a litte bit sun, you will see the linespeople without their jackets, even if the temperature is just around 20 degrees...
Hard to believe, but the umpire of this match, David Mercer, now a TV commentator for Eurosport amongst others, was just 34 years old back then. Look at him at 5:20: Rather seems like an 50-year-old or older in my opinion.
3 losses for Mac in 84. Lendl, Amritraj, and Steeb of Sweden in Davis Cup. Amritraj did it in October in S>Francisco indoor i believe. Amazing yr for Mac.
The French loss to Lendl was a matter of incredible fitness for Lendl. Mac got tight, and a little tired. That match turned Lendl's entire career around. Until then he was considered a "choker". After that he became an 8 time grand slam champ. McEnroe despite devastating loss did have an incredible year.
@iamtman1. If I may, Mac did lose to Lendl in the French final and Amritraj (1st rd in Cincinnati). But he lost his first singles match in the '84 DC final to Henrik Sundstrom.
Incidentally, Federer nearly had an identical record to Mac's '84 year when he went 81-4 in '05 (lost Masters final to Nalbandian). He went 92-5 in '06.
@mac823 Thanks! Yes i knew about Lendl, and Amritraj losses. And i knew about Davis Cup loss to Sweden, but i got Steeb, and Sundstrom confused. Thanks for correction.

Does anyone know what the name / title of the bumper music that's played at 3:24? They don't play that bumper music anymore.

@MultiStar83
I remember the Wimbledon final -72 between Stan Smith and Nastase. Back then the players didn´t even have chairs.

Does anyone know what McEnroe's other two losses in 1984 were? Thank you. :)
PatagoniaPedro 2 years ago
Well... other two losses were in the 1st round of Cincinnati by Amritraj and in Davis Cup Finals by Sundstrom.

Thank you. Otherwise he was invincible. That was the best year of any professional tennis player. Too bad he did not win the French.
Vijay Amritraj was an admirer of McEnroe's skills.

I remember Mac sometimes had a slight problem with endurance. It's a good thing the French loss did not get to him mentally :)
