There is no concept of following "the spirit" of the Qu'ran for Islam. They are very literal. If Muslims don't follow it, it may be considered a personal sin or possibly a sin against Allah. This is deadly serious for a Muslim's belief system because it directly impacts their chances of getting into heaven. Allah allow's a Muslim into heaven only through his whim.
