You must need very good pc and internet speed for this kind of game, otherwise you will just be defeated over and over. I recall playing marvel vs capcom online with kawaks and when i was playing with someone with bad connection it lagged so bad, couldn't perform any combo.

Are there any free fighting games available that have the option to play offline (other than ROMs)? I'm getting tired of playing shooters and RPGs all the time on my PC, but Street Fighter IV seems like one of my few options, even though it isn't free (by legal means anyway). I do enjoy playing online, but I've been getting stormy weather where I live, and it just knocks out the satellite, so I'm relying on botmatches and offline play to scratch my itch for multiplayer.

Well there's a lot of Japanese indie games for that like Akatsuki Blitzkampf (Third Reich based fighter with magical nazis and self-aware tanks) and Vanguard Princess (All girl fighter that has the innovative feature of assist characters taking the roles of both striker and groove/style.)

If you don't mind a risk getting into Star Trek level fanbases, Melty Blood has a few obsolete versions on PC and the Touhou series has two fighting games that revolves around dodging and casting projectiles.
