As for no practical concrete benefit, I don't think Benjamin Franklyn was going after any kind of practical concrete benefit when testing whether or not lightening was electricity. Just because we can't foresee a use for the knowledge doesn't mean the knowledge is useless.
They are trying to break down protons and neutrons to get a better knowledge of what they are build of (I know they are build of quarks or something - thats the name in Danish)...

I hope The LHC will be the first part of a very CLEAN ENERGY PROJECT for all peoples: We need energy and atomic fusion is the real response. But to do a good and coplète information we must to write als about these worries, i think.
Some of the worlds best scientists have been working on this project for the last 2 decades ,Im sure they have a good understanding what will happen when it is switched on
