Yeah, I did a written test a couple of months back, and as I stress easily, I was basically freaking out. (My whole class were, to be frank, but whatever.) Anyhow, in the middle of the entire thing, the freaking FIRE ALARM goes off. Which was seriously messed up 'cause, well, it turns out it's a drill, right. And we lost a grand total of like 15 minutes because of that. That's a horror story right there. So, yeah, I do well in written this, but I fucking hate 'em. Stress = BAD in my case.
completely agree. i've always managed to do well in exam situations without much work during the year, got good grades, coming to the end of uni now, and am looking at jobs... and am realising now that, despite being able to blag essays in 2 hours, I am completely unpracticed and way out of my depth when it comes to skills I need in jobs, e.g. presentations, explaining my knowledge in interviews, group work etc. Can't help feeling my previous education could have been better tuned.
this is a great video. i am dyslexic and struggle in exams but what annoys me most of all is when my exam papers arn't printed in pale blue coz its so difficult to read. I totaly agree with u about how something needs to change in the exam system.
For people like us it wouldn't be a problem, but most people can't freely think if that makes sense. For example, in art classes usually the teacher would tell you what to do, and you do it for a grade. For advanced art classes, you have to decide what to do in a certain medium, a lot of people struggle because it's too much freedom and they don't know what to do with it.
But I hate the system they have right now, maybe it's worse over there, I don't know, but in Illinois, it's not working.
I agree with you: exams should be about showing your knowledge in a subject, but they're not, they have turned into a test to see how much you can remember, and how fast you can write in a time limit.
I totally agree with you, Jazza. And it's not only Dyslexia. I have OCD and it is EXTREMELY difficult for me to excel in exams. I am a smart kid, but for some reason, writing is an excruciating process for me, and I second-guess my answers SO much. However, there is a way to get around this. Go speak to someone at the academics skills center at Manchester. They will be able to set you up with a plan through which you can get extra time for exams, have the exam read to you, or have someone
write the essay for you as you dictate it to them. This is really helpful, and it is on your own terms. If you don't feel like using the accommodations on a certain exam, you don't have to. They are only there to help you. You probably won't read this, and I understand, but try it. It could be helpful.
oh my goodnes, i TOTTALY know what you mean. Im dyslexic too, and it drives me nuts that people dont understand that i learn differently and express that knowlage in a different way. damn it, there NEEDS to be a change
hmm i have a deslexic friend and she writes more than anyone i know in a limited amount of time and shes brilliant at exams O.o
i agree, they should change the format, THEY SHOULD, being timed writing an essay just feels so unnatural, i'm the sort of person that doesn't follow expectations, so expecting me to write an essay to the best of my abilities may or may not happen on the actualy day. i scare myself sometimes.
I like the fact that your from the uk and i can just relate to you so much.
well i think that having an option of doing either an oral or an written assesment is actually a very shaky idea for the simple reason that their marking schemes will vary from each other.
what i tihnk is, make everyone do everything and then have a cumulative score. that way everyone still gets marked the same way but it incorporates the people who find traditional exams stressful and doesnt favour those who do (which basicly means im screwed but hey, whaddaya gonna do?)
i compleatly suck at giving oral presentations, i can't speak loud enough i hesitate, i pause in the middle of my prentation bucause i forget what i'm going to say even though its at the tip of my tounge. great video jaz :)
p.s. maybe examiners can let us do youtube videos ^_^
I finished history midyears today & it was made up of a test & 3 essays as well. The whole time, I was saying to myself "This is pointless." I truly agree though! What is the point of devoting a whole week to stressing out teens & putting them through torture if we never need to do that again in our life? Your boss isnt going to say "Great job cleaning that fryolator, write 4 essays out of these five options on everything youve learned here in the past 4 months in 90 minutes. GO!" I hate exams..
Nice rant jazza. I totally agree. I don't know how many exams I have done poorly on even though I knew my stuff. But the problem with giving presentations is time. In a uni class of 300 students, a final exam will only take 3 hours. However imagine the time it would take for each of those students to do a presentation (even a 10 minute one). Not possible. We do presentations in upper level classes where there are 40 students, and even they take 3 weeks of school time to do.
Oh I see, yeah it could be done that way, if it was done in tutorials. For us, we had to do it in front of the whole class, and its 10 mins, plus 5 for questions, so each is 15 mins. Class is 50 mins long, so 3 per day. And we have class 3 times a week, so we could only do 9 per day. But I see if you split it up, it can work. But again, it does require MORE resources. And resources=money. In my experience, Uni's r good at taking our tuition money, but not very good at giving it back, lol.
I completely agree. It's like nerimons old video the spoken word exam. It would be so much more prevalent to our society and our business world if we could do presentation type exams.
Yeah, I agree with you there Jazza. It's always bugged me how a year's worth of work ususally comes down to my performance during a time period of an hour and a half. And, like you say, it's not as if exams are preparing us for the big bad world where our bosses demand that we sit down and write an essay on the effects of the Watergate scandal to the American civil dispute in the sixties. For example.
I always wondered whether it's be better and less stressful for the studnets to have grades determined by teacher assessment. The only problem with that idea is that teachers would probably give low grades to students who are really smart, but give them a lot of grief during lessons.
good call, but i think there needs to be external assesment at least involved in the evaluation process otherwise if it is down to one person it is held up too much to biast.
my sister is dyslexic but the only thing that reminds me of it is that she asks me to help her spell some words (she is 4 yrs older) the exams are pants!! i feel the same way completly. There are exams like english lang and litt which i can cope with the time. but maltese (native language) we have 2 litt essays and 15 poems + questions for 2 hrs which is bolocks!!
you are the first person I know to say that. I personaly don't mind exams in general, but when it comes to the writting parts I freeze up and leave the page blank. If I'd have a chose between a written essay or some sort of presentation I'd pick that one every time.
For our essays we have to get evaluated on our notes..and our notes have to be in this special format and everything. its so stupid
We had this guy named Kim Peek come to our school today and he is an autistic savant..and he is dyslexic but really brilliant. he retains 97.9 percent of the information he learns..pretty cool
I agree with you whole-heartedly. Incidentally, I really can excel with the 'traditional' type of testing, but there are definitely those who do not. You are too right!
Is it because it's just easier for them to do the same with everyone ? Presentations and docs sound good. Coursework is tricky as it can be easy for people to copy/cheat.
exactly i didnt see the point in coursework, because te amount of people who just copied and pasted and just changed some of the words was ridiculous.
I'm at college and I have exams coming up so I'm looking forward to that. I think that the subject is good because it shows the way with people who have dyslexia.
I would go further in saying it's not just the exams but the entire curriculum that needs overhauled. The one size fits all approach in secondary education was designed for a long dead industrial economy in Britain, completely irrelevant to today's globalization. Well done you in working with what you've got and making it to uni:D
I cant say i'm a fan of either exams or presentations but i liked what you said about the filming documentires. I dont think they should get rid of written exams cause it would be unfair to those who excel in that field. It should be completely optional and you are so right about giving everyone an option to choose from.
omg i h8 exams. they frustrate me so much n i get so stressed. i also had 2 write 3 essays in 90 minutes the uva day. stupid idea! i think we shud b evaluated throughout the year n r grade shud b based on that.
n if ur dyslexic ur allowed extra time in exams. i knew sum1 who did that in their A levels so i'm sure u shud b able 2 aswell. u shud ask. as otherwise ur at a disadvantage n mite b able 2 get more marks n pass ur history of china exam woooooooo! :D
yeah you can but extra time for me doesnt really help the situation. in that environment i feel like i cant focuz... and it just gives me more time to not get stuff down... if u no what i mean...
i totally agree! i'm studying for prelims at the moment and i keep thinking of what is the point of all this! exams suck...they suck all of the your time up! and will eventually suck up your happines
While personally id prefer an essay over a presentation (i suck at presentations lol xD ) everyone is different so the idea of having a choice would work really well
I think something needs to change in the entire education system. The amount you learn cannot be measured by a numerical value it just doesn't make sense. I agree Jazza, one cannot judge someone by a simple timed essay it is unfair. Alot of the time especially with me, an exam is simply something I memorize facts for. Shouldn't it be that I'm absorbing these facts or ideas and being able to explain it to someone in a story format and not "compare and contrast the Mennonites to the Turks"?
Hear hear! Excellent points Jazza, I think Nerimon also made a video about spoken exams a while ago. I'm sorry about your essay, but I assume you'll have some oral exams as well; you'll do well then!
You may be an editing genius, Jazza, but you'll soon be a super-genius once I give you SV!
I think a lot of people would agree with you. I certianly would, for one, and I know a good few people who have devoted their lives to the carrier of education.
Testing students with questions of essays, multiple choice, true and false, short or long answer, matching, or fill in the blanks are essentially all the different methods used on exams. It seems that those are really the best methods we (as humans) have come up with.
That's were it all falls down, of course, because some people just aren't good at memorizing their notes for the purpose of spitting the information out onto a timed test. That really shouldn't be the purpose of education anyway, the purpose should be learning and not regurgitation. A lot of people also experience varying amounts of anxiety, caused by exams.
Hopefully some day (soon would be nice) we'll come up with better methods of insuring students have learned what they were taught.
Personally, i have panic attacks and an abnormally short attention span which also doesn't help in these situations.
Exams definitely put way too much stress on the pupils and it doesn't surprise me that some people crack under the pressure. we put in a year full of work and it all comes down to whether or not you can answer one question.
I think it would be better if instead of exams we could just do a series of assessments throughout the year that would count to our overall grade.
even it would be good if you could choose they way your assesed. whether its broken up throughout the year or if you still want an exam then you can have it.
I agree completely, we need a new format and spoken exams would be the way forward, id prefer spoken exams and i can say alot more on subjects than i can word on paper sometimes aswell =/
Jazza, I've got news for you. You're a superstar. There are very few people on YouTube who instantly jump out at me as a star, but you're one of them. So don't worry too much that the exam system is set up in such a way that is a problem for people with dyslexia. You are going to excel throughout your life. I have no doubt about that. You have a number of outstanding qualities that come shining through. And intelligence is one of them. You'll do fine.
completely agree..exams formats should be changed. I would so much prefer to do a spoken presentation than a tonne of essay writing for an exam. Also, if someone has just one bad day that happens to fall on the day of exams, the whole things wasted. oo I don't think I've ever seen a jazza rant befoe.
yeah man totally.. I always thought the teachers should have more of a say, because they see you all the time when you aren't under pressure and they know what you are capable of. It's open to bias and favouritism I suppose, but like in gcse PE the teacher graded everyone for practical then there was one day of moderation, in which a mod came to chack a random sample. That worked pretty well.
Essay exams are misleading. I once had to write an essay on How Green Was My Valley. I couldn't get past pg 30. My desk mate had read it, so I asked her what happened during roll call. Long story, short, I got a 100 and she got a 65. If you can write well, you can BS your way through essays. The girl was furious at me for doing so well on it, and wanted to tell the teacher. The problem was, she knew I deserved the 100 and she didn't.
no offence but if you didnt read the book and "BS"ed your way through it, then how can you claim you deserved the better mark. there is much more the the professional world than being able to bullshit ur way through an essay. when it comes down to it, if she has done the work, knows her stuff, but just cant get it down on paper. then surely she is the one who deserves the higher mark.
Oh technically she DID deserve a better mark, EXCEPT that she couldn't write good sentences and develop her ideas properly. My paper was deserving because it was truly excellent. It was the only 100 in the class. I use the term BS loosely, because in fact the paper was quite on point and thorough. I developed themes that totally escaped her limited comprehension.
But that is why I said essay exams are misleading. She had the information, but she didn't have the skills to use it.
But thats the whole point that im trying to highlight. the environment in an essay style exam is very artificial and doesnt represent how you will perform in the majorty of jobs in the real world. They shouldnt be testing whether you can develop themes and write an essay. an exam should test how well you know the subject, and the fact that a large number of people struggle with essay writing doesnt seem fair if they know their stuff.
Good and fair rant. With all the advancements in technology, it seems that the way we educate would become more advanced and individualized as well, wouldn't you?
The guy that played Fonzi [on Happy Days] is also dyslexic. He had to get a stunt guy to do all his motorcycle stuff because he was SO dyslexic he couldn't drive the motorcycle [without wearing glasses or something]. But yes, Dyslexia sucks. I know a LOT of people who have it. And I hate exams, also =/ I have ADHD and absolutely can NOT sit still that long.
Hey, I agree with a lot of what you're saying here.. I agree that the examination format is in need of updating.. I guess the introduction of course work based subjects goes some way to helping.. I guess the man-hours necessary for one on one presentations might be high, but it's a good idea, particularly for peeps with dyslexia and suchlike.
If you let the professors know about the dyslexia, they HAVE to give you an "accommodating" examination. That could be an oral substitute, extra time, no time limit, whatever. If you have a written medical diagnosis, bring that along when asking. You are not alone in this and need not suffer needlessly because of it.
the only way they can compensate in my uni is through "extra time" which to be honest is pointless, no matter how much time you get the same mistakes will happen. the fact that dyslexics can have the option of an oral is good. but i think it should be opebn to everyone whether they have a learning difficulty or not.

GO!" I hate exams..

i'm bad at test essays. matching, multiple choice, those are fine, but i always get stuck on essays. a choice would be nice.

We do presentations in upper level classes where there are 40 students, and even they take 3 weeks of school time to do.
billyX84 4 years ago
it is possible,
in my spanish class we all had to do a 10 minute presentation, the work load was split up getween the staff and that was a body of over 400 students.
the schools have the resources and the ability, i just dont understand why they dont do it
jaz
;)
rhymingwithoranges 4 years ago
Oh I see, yeah it could be done that way, if it was done in tutorials. For us, we had to do it in front of the whole class, and its 10 mins, plus 5 for questions, so each is 15 mins. Class is 50 mins long, so 3 per day. And we have class 3 times a week, so we could only do 9 per day. But I see if you split it up, it can work. But again, it does require MORE resources. And resources=money. In my experience, Uni's r good at taking our tuition money, but not very good at giving it back, lol.

rhymingwithoranges 4 years ago
Yeah, I agree with you there Jazza. It's always bugged me how a year's worth of work ususally comes down to my performance during a time period of an hour and a half. And, like you say, it's not as if exams are preparing us for the big bad world where our bosses demand that we sit down and write an essay on the effects of the Watergate scandal to the American civil dispute in the sixties. For example.
charlyandjosh 4 years ago
I always wondered whether it's be better and less stressful for the studnets to have grades determined by teacher assessment. The only problem with that idea is that teachers would probably give low grades to students who are really smart, but give them a lot of grief during lessons.
charlyandjosh 4 years ago
they do that in germany, a friend of mine grew up and "did" highschool there - he loved it
DMcLean1989 4 years ago
Oh, I never knew that. Thanks. :-)

good call, but i think there needs to be external assesment at least involved in the evaluation process otherwise if it is down to one person it is held up too much to biast.
and yay to the watergate scandal!

you are the first person I know to say that. I personaly don't mind exams in general, but when it comes to the writting parts I freeze up and leave the page blank. If I'd have a chose between a written essay or some sort of presentation I'd pick that one every time.

100% agree
I am currently at college and decided to take a BTEC rather than A levels, which is 100% coursework rather than exams.
Which makes it much better as we have time to do the work rather than rush it all. Also when you sit an exam you can have an off day as well.

I have dyslexia too so I can sympathize with your situation.

omg i h8 exams. they frustrate me so much n i get so stressed. i also had 2 write 3 essays in 90 minutes the uva day. stupid idea! i think we shud b evaluated throughout the year n r grade shud b based on that.
n if ur dyslexic ur allowed extra time in exams. i knew sum1 who did that in their A levels so i'm sure u shud b able 2 aswell. u shud ask. as otherwise ur at a disadvantage n mite b able 2 get more marks n pass ur history of china exam woooooooo! :D

I think something needs to change in the entire education system. The amount you learn cannot be measured by a numerical value it just doesn't make sense. I agree Jazza, one cannot judge someone by a simple timed essay it is unfair. Alot of the time especially with me, an exam is simply something I memorize facts for. Shouldn't it be that I'm absorbing these facts or ideas and being able to explain it to someone in a story format and not "compare and contrast the Mennonites to the Turks"?
tagalicious2789 4 years ago
Hear hear! Excellent points Jazza, I think Nerimon also made a video about spoken exams a while ago. I'm sorry about your essay, but I assume you'll have some oral exams as well; you'll do well then!

rhymingwithoranges 4 years ago
I think a lot of people would agree with you. I certianly would, for one, and I know a good few people who have devoted their lives to the carrier of education.
Testing students with questions of essays, multiple choice, true and false, short or long answer, matching, or fill in the blanks are essentially all the different methods used on exams. It seems that those are really the best methods we (as humans) have come up with.
Aaroncast86 4 years ago
That's were it all falls down, of course, because some people just aren't good at memorizing their notes for the purpose of spitting the information out onto a timed test. That really shouldn't be the purpose of education anyway, the purpose should be learning and not regurgitation. A lot of people also experience varying amounts of anxiety, caused by exams.
Hopefully some day (soon would be nice) we'll come up with better methods of insuring students have learned what they were taught.
Aaroncast86 4 years ago
exactly
i hates my secondary school education because i just had to learn how to pass an exam, and learned very little about the actual subject.

TotalTrekkie 4 years ago
yeah man totally..
MusicFromBlueSkies 4 years ago
yeah, i did pe too and the moderation system works really well. they just need to be able to apply that to "academic" subjects.

The problem was, she knew I deserved the 100 and she didn't.
dafttool 4 years ago
no offence but if you didnt read the book and "BS"ed your way through it, then how can you claim you deserved the better mark. there is much more the the professional world than being able to bullshit ur way through an essay. when it comes down to it, if she has done the work, knows her stuff, but just cant get it down on paper. then surely she is the one who deserves the higher mark.
just a though
jaz
rhymingwithoranges 4 years ago
Oh technically she DID deserve a better mark, EXCEPT that she couldn't write good sentences and develop her ideas properly. My paper was deserving because it was truly excellent. It was the only 100 in the class. I use the term BS loosely, because in fact the paper was quite on point and thorough. I developed themes that totally escaped her limited comprehension.
But that is why I said essay exams are misleading. She had the information, but she didn't have the skills to use it.
dafttool 4 years ago
But thats the whole point that im trying to highlight. the environment in an essay style exam is very artificial and doesnt represent how you will perform in the majorty of jobs in the real world. They shouldnt be testing whether you can develop themes and write an essay. an exam should test how well you know the subject, and the fact that a large number of people struggle with essay writing doesnt seem fair if they know their stuff.
thats why i think it should change.

shalomkitty 4 years ago
Hey, I agree with a lot of what you're saying here.. I agree that the examination format is in need of updating.. I guess the introduction of course work based subjects goes some way to helping.. I guess the man-hours necessary for one on one presentations might be high, but it's a good idea, particularly for peeps with dyslexia and suchlike.
cheekychen 4 years ago
If you let the professors know about the dyslexia, they HAVE to give you an "accommodating" examination. That could be an oral substitute, extra time, no time limit, whatever. If you have a written medical diagnosis, bring that along when asking. You are not alone in this and need not suffer needlessly because of it.
Tiednbound 4 years ago
Good point.
dafttool 4 years ago
the only way they can compensate in my uni is through "extra time" which to be honest is pointless, no matter how much time you get the same mistakes will happen. the fact that dyslexics can have the option of an oral is good. but i think it should be opebn to everyone whether they have a learning difficulty or not.
i think
