Letterman is such a HUUUGE DICKWAD! Starting with Kaufman all the way up to Joaquin Phoenix. Every time someone spaces out on his show he acts like a complete fuddy duddy. And his STUPID audience go along with him. He has a chance to make AWESOME TV segments and screws up by going speechless and totally square.
I love how someone can be given publicity time and then act like a complete and utter prick and people still manage to slam Letterman. Yeah that makes sense.
In the eighties this guy was such an inspiration to just be my weird wonderful self. He made me realize that even if people always called me weirdo there were others somewhere. Love him.
BTW Crispin's dad Bruce was in a cool movie called Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster.
Heck, I'd pay anything in the world just to have one minute with someone as charming, handsome, and amazing as Crispin Glover. Hey Letterman, can I go to dinner with Crispin?
Crispin Hellion Glover is awesome. This kicks ass. I would have dinner with that crazy mother f@&ker any day of the week. Sweet kick moves to boot. Dave was clueless
Crispin Glover is actually doing an Andy Kaufman style prank on letterman. not the other way around. He was playing a character from a movie that was never released called Rubin and Ed. Crispin is just messing with everybody here.
This....these types of shows, his show on NBC before Letterman moved to CBS for the money, is the reason why I fell in love with The David Letterman Show when I was 9 years old . This, and Joe Piscopo's (remember him?) parody of him on his 80's variety show. Will we EVER see this Letterman ever again?!?
I fucking love crispin glover, hes such a freak :) i hate letterman anyways haha, i think he was on acid he was looking at everything around him in terror, goodness who wud take that and then go on a talk show
Glover did his first appearance on Letterman in character as Rubin to promote the release of Rubin and Ed. In this interview and the one following it he uses delaying tactics to waste the interview time, to avoid explaining his behavior in the first interview -to keep it a mystery. He uses the uncomfortable awkwardness in this one, and in the following one launches into a long and unrelated story.
@Xdeathtroll some say Letterman was in on it (to save face). Another theory is that the female shoe-hecklers were planted. I personally doubt both counts. Firstly, it would be the only hoax I can recall Dave being in on. Secondly, the hoax would've been more structured, and also more lighthearted...with a good public reaction calculated. So I think the hecklers were authentic...and it was just good luck for the talented Crispin, who turned it to his advantage; he played everyone like a violin.
@Xdeathtroll He was in costume, but his nervousness was real. He wasn't acting, if you've seen Rubin and Ed you'd realize his character isn't anything like how he acted in this interview. If you watch his other interviews you'd see the same awkward behavior. He himself even denies this interview took place and is embarrassed about it. I like how you guys are trying to make him into some sort of Andy Kaufman like figure, but he isn't. He's real and that's what I like about him.
This was really hard and uncomfortable to watch. I've seen Crispin Glover do his sideshow and I've met him, he's a nice guy but he's clearly INSANE!!! He's really fucked up! Even though I admire him allot, there's definitely something messed up going on with that guy. I don't care if he was acting, it wasn't funny and it was in bad taste. Letterman had every right to get him off the show, and yeah why would anyone want to have dinner with someone like that? Crispin was obviously demented.
I think that most celebrities probably see through the silly game that they have to play on these talk shows, and some decide to fool around with it. Andy Kaufman was one of the first to really approach the talk show appearance as theater of the absurd, but others have as well, e.g. Joaquin Phoenix, either out of boredom, attention-seeking, or just a desire to shake things up.
@jontv I mean he is dressed to look like an actor because cmmon... no one dresses like that (even at that time). But he's talking and gestures confuse me. This is wacko.:)) but I like it
@jontv yeah I know what you're talking about, I saw the joaquin pheonix interview also... But don't get me wrong, it's nice to see actors besides their acting performances but... in this way? I don't know...
@Costinesuper - You have to remember it's not just the occasional talk show these folks have to deal with. Any time they come out with a new project, they do literally hundreds of interviews with reporters and PR idiots from every major city. They get really tired of answering the same stupid questions over and over. Some of them decide that since this is all a big act anyway, they will play around with it. It's amusing but awkward because it makes Letterman's job harder (he doesn't like that).
Letterman always gets shit for being square, but he's had CG on at least 3 times, as well as having Harmony Korine on about 3 times as well. guy deserves props.
After the Kaufman/Lawler/Letterman incident, I have to believe Glover was "going into business for himself", probably figuring he'd get a bunch of publicity and become a media superstar.
these letterman appearances completely destroyed glover's career. he was written out of the back to the future sequels, and never really worked on a high profile project again, even though before this interview he was one of the most sought after character actors in hollywood.
Listen, you can tell me all day and all night that Glover "intended" it to be some kind of comedy piece like Andy Kaufman...you know, a REAL genius, but the fact remains that Glover was on LSD. At the very least. I'm sure he dressed up as that character, and wanted to play that character, but that motherfucker was on acid.
Going to see Crispin tonight in Little Rock, AR while he tours with his film. I like Dave, but he's not coming here anytime soon, so I'll back Crispin in the bar fight tonight.
@willlliw You sure? Letterman has said "it was news to him" just last year when asked if the interview with JP was a hoax. I have yet to hear of anything to the contrary. Kaufman/Lawler was one thing, but CG and JP both threw him off because Dave thinks he's a hilarious David Frost and couldn't see the gags for what they were. Also, I haven't heard of Dave being in cahoots with Glover when he appeared. Info, please.
@eurotrashboi To insult someone on live TV like that is sad. Letterman acts like he's better than everyone, yet this is the reason most people hate him. This has happened before, actors prank the late night talk show hosts by coming to the interview in character.
TBH Crispin Glover is a very talented actor, and Letterman is an average late night host at best, which most of his viewers are older.
