what a beautiful lens but guess what it weighs a ton compared to the 70-400mm in which it is bigger. but I would like to have one if ever someone will give me one for free.
This lens is as good as any of the options available for canon/nikon. This is in fact a minolta design which apart form the fluted rubber grips is largeley identical, not really upgraded or altered apart from the paint aparently, maybe sony has chosen their own lens coatings but that's all. I wish people wouldnt do focus speed tests like this because what is in fact hapening is the lens is hunting where the camera acually slows the focus down so not to miss the target in low light for example.
@Drinapropriatetouch Add to that the focus test is done at 200mm so it will focus slower again than if it were at 70mm. This lens will definately focus faster if feild conditions.
Also what the hell is that stop down test? it shows nothing but the apeture.
What is the matter with the most of you. Yes Nikon and Canon makes outstanding camaras and lenses, but Sony makes also very good camaras and lenses. This particular lens is a Minolta design, what is upgradet by Sony.
You can read all of the review and test report, that this beauty is an exceptional lens. I have the Sony A55 Body, with the 70-200G and the Zeiss 16-80. The pictures are awesome. I think that Canon and Nikon are feeling the pressure from Sonys innovative products.
I'd love to see a bit more meat in your reviews, maybe what you currently did with some walk around real world experience and more photos that might give such a lens a good workout...sports, tracking moving objects, high speed photos, etc. Also, what really sets sony apart from other brands like Canon and Nikon...why not just go with one of those brands at that high-end level? I'd love you to show why Sony and their lenses/flashes are a real player. Have they kept HS flash sync? Thanks!
@MrNeuschwanstein Are you serious? You would give up a constant f2.8 for extra 100m? There's a reason why this lens is more expensive, because it's way better.
@MrNeuschwanstein Are you kidding me? The sigma 70-300 a better choice? You are right- it is more compact and lighter- it also is built like utter crap compared to this lens, has a slow aperture of 3.5-5.6 vs the constant 2.8 of the sony, no super sonic motor, etc... and what is stopping you from traveling with the Sony? I took this lens and the Zeiss 24-70 along with my A850+BG for 3 weeks in Japan from the states. The only reason to buy the sigma 70-300 is to save money and that is IT.
Why would Sony want to be Canon, there actully copying Minolta. If you look at the old Minolta 70-200 2.8 design, it looks just like this. Im not a Sony fanboy or anything lol, I like to use almost all the camera brands out there even Canon.
Its not a canon knock off , its a knock off of the konica minolta 70-200 2.8. Sony bought konica minolta and they upgraded there old lens design.... Besides how much different can you make a camera lens lol.
I have not tried the 70-300mm G, although I would expect that either would have its pros and cons. The 70-200 is a better low light performer with a larger max aperture, while the 70-300 lets you get a bit closer to the action. Both use the quick SSM focus system. I guess if deciding between the two, the price, and more importantly, your shooting needs should be considered. Cheers.
Lovin' this lens already, just got it this past weekend, I was out Friday Night in the rain and mug for a football game...Wow! @ night no issues now, this was a long time coming, I remeber trying to adjust a my 75-300 4/5.6 at night under the lights. LMAO...This is a sweet investment. I watched this great vid last week and still feel the same. Good job mate.
You're not supposed to use a lens hood with the flash, are you? Anyway, this is practically the same lens as the Konica-Minolta 70-200mm f/2.8. The only difference is minor cosmetic. The ribbed pattern on the rings is different on the Minolta lens, and of course Sony bruttaly slapped on their logo on this Minolta designed lens. I think Sony should have left Minolta name on their gear. I think it could even help their sales.
I have been a Minolta user since 99 and felt it was a slap in the face when Minolta left unexpectantly. I, for one am glad someone picked up the Minolta mount. as far as using the Minolta name, who cares, they are dead and gone. Sony's public relations suck terribly, however the organization can put "Minolta" back on the DSLR map. I personally just bought this "Sony" lens and am extremely happy with it. Minolta, they had their time, now its time to move on.
@shorty6049 So are the other brands :) Sorry, but you sound like a fanboy. I know I love Canon but not to the extent that I think it's god. Nikon has a lot of strengths especially when it comes to noise.
@RyanTheTuber no, i'm just saying, all of sony's lenses look futuristic. (not just a personal opinion, i've heard it from friends who shoot nikon and canon) and canon hasn't changed the look of their 70-200 since they started making it as far as I know, so it's a fair assumption that it doesn't look current, because it's an old design. trust me... i know better than to think sony's a god... all my lenses are sigma anyway. lol
its funny to see people saying "wow this lens focus so slow" or "is Sony copying Canon's design?"
go get some research and shoot more please. Don't shame yourself.

@kolan07 why, because it's white? That's so the body doesn't distort when you're shooting outside. black lenses heat up faster

sony are the best!!!!!!! i like that is verry awesome this tele lens and a700 body!!!
TheMishushadow 2 years ago 5
Actually the lens is entirely developed by Minolta they had exactly the same lens out on market before.
Anyway what I don't get is how you could claim a flash to be the typical Setup, maybe for lowlight but not as walk around or sports lens.
