The beavers are a blatant metaphor for his sexual frustration. The tree falling represents his fragile state of mind, and it's not a coincidence that the name "vivident" means 'virility' in Latin.

I get it, his ineptitude as a beaver caused him to be rejected from beaver society and directly led to injury (the tree falling on him, which likely alludes to self-inflicted pain.) He felt isolated despite having two beavers with him, a 'foreigner' among his own kind (hence the many represented nationalities - Italian, Finnish, Norwegian, Beaver, Stupid Reporter Bitch.) Ultimately, the chewing gum was the only thing which could save him from suicide and/or homicide.
