It took just over 6 hours for the fires to travel from Kilmore to Kinglake. Sounds like plenty of time to get out doesn't it but, as BTP says hindsight is a wonderful thing. At the time the fire started no one knew exactly where the fire would go or even that it would become such a massive blaze. By the time that people knew the fire was coming it was too late to evacuate.
Large scale evacuation would need to be done and completed the day before the danger.
Evacuation would involve say a million people each time (going where?) and would have happened at least 6 times last summer. There are better ways. The royal commission is unlikely to recommend compulsory evacuations. Other steps will be taken, such as warning systems being totally revamped and refuges set up.
Oh . . . and swine flu is just another flu - remember that 2500 people die in Australia each year from flu - so far we have, sadly, lost 10 from illnesses including swine flu.

Most who stayed didn't stay because of "Material Wealth". They stayed because we were told again and again that when a fire comes you either flee or stay and fight, and everyone who stayed and fought was well prepared to do so. It took just over 6 hours for the fires to travel from Kilmore to Kinglake. Sounds like plenty of time to get out doesn't it but, as BTP says hindsight is a wonderful thing. At the time the fire started no one knew exactly where the fire would go or even that it would become such a massive blaze. By the time that people knew the fire was coming it was too late to evacuate.
Large scale evacuation would need to be done and completed the day before the danger.

Evacuation would involve say a million people each time (going where?) and would have happened at least 6 times last summer. There are better ways. The royal commission is unlikely to recommend compulsory evacuations. Other steps will be taken, such as warning systems being totally revamped and refuges set up.
Oh . . . and swine flu is just another flu - remember that 2500 people die in Australia each year from flu - so far we have, sadly, lost 10 from illnesses including swine flu.

Most who stayed didn't stay because of "Material Wealth". They stayed because we were told again and again that when a fire comes you either flee or stay and fight, and everyone who stayed and fought was well prepared to do so. The difference this time was that we'd never seen fires this destructive or fast before, and although they could have survived and fought off a normal bushfire, one of this intensity was completely unexpected.

i was in those fires, i live in kinglake, we only just got out. there were no sirens or warning at all. so anyone who say "oh just get the army in and evacuate,... you really dont understand how sudden it was. Iv lost friends and people who were close to me in this. People chose to stay because they knew if they went on the roads they would have died trying to evacuate because when people found out the fires were heading their way it was too late to go anywhere,

The people who died were killed within hours of the fires starting - no-one could have organised a mass evacuation - that would have led to more deaths on the roads. This fire was more intense and faster than any in memory - remember it was our hottest ever recorded day following three 43+ days and with massive winds.

The 5% unemployment rate is not calculated from the general population, it is calculated from only within people considered "unemployed and actively looking for work". Also it takes into account age. 210 people dead, i have been watching these fires on the news and i am just saddened at what has been lost, mcfeast11 and sylviekoot should have there homes destroyed and there friends and family killed so that we can call them "racist pigs" they should be ashamed at what they have said, i am from Australia and i am Victorian, and even though our country is not perfect its still one of the safest countries to live in so FUCK YOU SYLVIEKOOT AND FUCK YOU MCFEAST FUCK YOU AND I HOPE YOU GO TO HELL!

I lost nine family members. My step sister and step mother were killed in their car. If you have to bag aussie, go somewhere else, in fact, just go away.
