Because Justin wanted to go solo. The rest of the group wanted to continue after a short break but Justin, at least at the time, was selfish and decided it was more important for him to survive the boyband backlash than it was for the group. I'm beginning to have some hopes of a return in the future though. Check out Lance's book for more details.

@tenor335 Actually, all the members wanted to go solo. Justin was the only one who truly achieved mainstream success. As for a possible reunion, Justin gave an interview that he'd be happy to do it. JC doesn't want to though, but he has good reasons.

I really don't understand why NSync fans hate on Justin so much. Given the same chance, all the members would have done the same thing. Boy bands WERE fading out. Why can't we just be happy for him?

As for Lance, apparently they had a falling out.
