  • BRAVA!!!!!!!! amazing!!

  • Comment removed

  • haha! I love this! <3

  • this is and will always be my favorite rendition of this song. Her voice is so dynamic and interesting, and her character portrayal and interpretation is so perfect.

  • this was fantastic....I would love to see this in person.

  • @LauraRose83 gotta agree i was just there on October 18th! but to be fair most recordings can never compare to live. if you want one more comic like Anna Christy's check out patricia petibon she has 3 videos of it on youtube In my opinion the best of which is labeled Patricia Petibon - J.Offenbach, Couplets D'Olympia, La Poupee

  • Anna Christy did an awesome job at this at Lyric Opera of Chicago! This sucks!

  • best .../best...best....

  • THIS WOMAN IN UN-F***ING-BELIEVABLE!!!

  • wow

  • Just admire her absolute flexibility and perfect breath control.

  • Amazing!!

  • What a delight! Beautiful voice, charming acting, sublime singing!

  • HOLY SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!!!

  • bravísima!!!!

hmm at the end.... I think it could have been a lil better

    but she's AWESOME

  • is she using blue contact lensses?

  • My mouth, folks. I can't close it.

  • Maravilhosa!

  • Très beau.

  • @Rumpelstiltskinsky She have been doing various works. Apparently, she had performed 20-somethings that you mentioned in her early career, such as Queen of the Night, Gilda, Lucia, Lakme, Elvira, Doll, Zerbinetta and Amina, etc. In her middle time, however, she did many other things. Fra Diavolo (very rare work by Auber) 2009, Romeo & Juliette 2010, Le Coq d'Or 2003 , La Traviata 2007, some German lieders and Barbiere di Siviglia 2010 (this March).

  • @Rumpelstiltskinsky Hope you do some research. The things that were posted here are just a part of her entire works.

  • @Rumpelstiltskinsky her mental age must be very young. many diva started singing in very young age, and could not experence many things the commons would experence in evryday life. she also said that she is very clumsy at counting money, buying food in a super market....especially unmarried divas. someone's temper would become very difficult, if their looks no more fit their life on stage, like Tebaldi, Marcella Pobbe. but Sumi is more fortunate. at least her baby face is more helpful to

  • @Rumpelstiltskinsky to her peterpan-like sentiment. and voice too..very rare case. Dessay's voice is not more suit for her best repotoires, but Umi's still....

  • @Rumpelstiltskinsky

This singer has a superb talent, and talent knows no age

  • She is just magnificent!!!

  • I have never seen anyone who seems to enjoy themselves so much while working so hard on a masterful performance. Sumi Jo is rapidly becoming my favorite soprano - maybe my favorite singer.

(And she loves and respects animals. What more could I ask for!)

  • PERFEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECT !!!

  • its so wonderful ... :)

  • try listening to a 13 yr old girl singing the same song~ i think sumi sings better, but just take a bit of time listening to the girl, it's worthwhile listening! search for: 'doll song vivian yau' and click the first video!

  • @belly1237 I listened and she is incredible for someone so young. Although she is taking a really big risk singing arias like that so young. She may lose her voice.

  • try listening to a 13 yr old girl singing the same song~ i think sumi sings better, but just take a bit of time listening to the girl, it's worthwhile listening! search for: doll song vivian yau and click the first video!

  • ¡Excelentísimo, bravísimo, maestra!

  • wonderful!

  • Oh Sumi les oiseaux dans la charmille:

    quel sublime!

    Jo

  • Lyrics!

    Ah! Voilà la chanson gentille

    La chanson d'Olympia! Ah!

    She's fantastic!

  • Essa é a VOZ!!!! Um dos mais belos timbres do mundo.Seu virtuosismo, agilidade e volume são impecaveis.Bravíssimo Sumi

  • bravo!!! :D

  • First time I thought 'cute' when I heard opera :))

  • When they invent the holographic musical box guess who I want to pop up each and every time I open it.

  • This is a great rendition which shows all the skills of her voice in a rather difficult aria.

  • Okay. I actually stood and applauded a You Tube clip. If I'd been at the concert cartwheels in the isles might have come in to it. What a Talent ( with a capital 'T' )

  • Unbelievable

  • :-))

  • I saw the movie a while back and Im much more pleased with her version than the movie, she looks like shes having alot of fun with it and I like how she played with the fan and the pianist What a voice!

  • i love this aria! wonderfull

  • Maravilhosa. Grande artista e interprete. Sua voz faz bem para a alma.

  • bleah

  • Fantastic singer and good actor (comica) together!

  • Marvellous!!! She's a great artist and singer!!!

  • I saw Sumi perform Olympia@ LA Opera. She's marvelous. Not only does she act the part marvelously, with comic quality, but her French is perfect. She has the right vocal size for the part, she's charming and it really is the best Olympia to come in a long long time Brava Bravissima

  • I think Katherine Kim sang it better at the Met recently. She was amazing.

  • i'm still partial to dessay

  • Hehe. It's definitely not Italian @imbatman1995. It's French.

  • @BizarreBrothersHotel

    yes french

  • This is wonderful!

  • What sweet playfulness. She's amazing!

  • AMAZING!

  • beautiful voice!! such talent! love the dress too. :)

  • And I wouldn't attempt singing anything like this unless you're a top-notch soprano. It's a very tricky piece. Anyway it's not Italian !

  • what language is this? I'm trying to find a song to sing for an Italian night. :)

  • The clue's in the title - Les Oiseaux . . . ! French of course, as its composer, Offenbach.

  • Wow!!!!!

  • What a doll, what a doll, what a voice! Wonderful and fun. Thank you for posting.

  • Amazing... I mean.... Sumi Jo is the DOLL. Very nice, flawless, impeccable and superb...

  • well yeah renne zellweger make it better but she is actress and it was in movie and many people work on that scene +many tricks. this is live.

  • she was entertaining to watch. :)

  • Hah! , Excellent Finale..

    Bravo!

  • She is simply brilliant and superb.

  • I love this song, so entertaining. =P

  • Wow this is great wonderful piece!

  • Actually like this version...Just don;t think you can top Luciana Serra's. And I've watched a lot.

  • Obviously I can't change your mind about whether you like Sumi or not but I would like to address your issues about her technique. Firstly, I don't know Brightman's work very well so I can't comment on that, but whilst Sumi may have her faults, but her technique is world renowned.

She doesn't perform at places like the Met or Covent Garden anymore which is why you may not have heard her "actually being in an opera". This is because they only wanted her to be Gilda, Lucia, Queen of the Night...

  • Thats why she chooses to perform at smaller places like Liege and la Comique where she can explore interesting, lesser known works such as Fra Diavolo or Le Coq d'Or.

I can't hear any vocal issues in this performance? While the final note is just showing off, it is based upon superhuman breath control. I can only think of Sutherland and Caballe who better Sumi in breath control. Please listen to her recordings of "L'amour lui dit la belle" and "Carnaval de Venise" and then see if you like her?

  • terrible technique? Im sorry but......do u know anything about opera singing? sumi jo has been working on her vocal skills since she was 11.....and now she is approaching 50....that woman has DEVOTED HER LIFE to singing, and not being able to hear her tachnique is FLAWLESS.....THAT is whats terrible

  • hahaha! 18 seconds of breath! when it comes to technique there's no woman on this planet to beat the Great Ms Sumi Jo!!!

  • STREPITOSA

  • very pretty, but personally i prefer Dessay's version.

  • she is amazing!!!!!!!!!

  • Everytime I watch this woman my chin comes seriously down, she is just hypnotizing! A burst of fresh air!

  • If this isn't an aspiration, I don't know what is.

    Her performance was absolutely incredible.

  • wowow i cant not believe my ears!!!! damn soooooooooo pleased wit her

  • un bellissimo usignolo!

  • Genrally speaking, the quality of video are far more better on dailymotion with the version Firefox 3.5 b99

  • wow what an amazing woman

  • i did not like this song until she sang!!!!!!!!! she sang it so lively!!!!! so fantastic!!!!!!!

  • è simpaticissima :)

  • it has alot to do with it, kids of color who don't know that they can come into this genre and be something, can look to her as a source of inspiration. Miss Battle, Verrett, Anderson...etc. have all done this for people of color and their work continues to inspire kids who never new about this world (opera) or its opportunity.

  • I love this comment...You just gave me what I needed!

  • wow her breath support is absolutly amazing!

  • its amazing to see her perform, yet another woman of color who can hold her own in this genre of music, amazing clarity and charm

  • What a moronic comment. What does skin colour have to do with anything? Fool.

  • The very wonderful Sumi Jo.

  • I am meaning, this "Dool-Role" is very well written for her !

  • BRAVA!!! :)

  • Wow wow! She's very charming!

  • Remind me of Chitty Chitty bang bang with all of the doll like behaviour! She was amazing. very theatrical.

  • man... i think the best doin' this is Luciana Serra

  • very nice

  • she has a very nice voice but i don't get it : why she's moving like a robot ;| ?

  • because the charachter of that operetta from hoffenbach is one of those singing doll, carillon

  • Um... a high E flat while fanning and spinning around?! This woman is INSANE! Brilliantly done.

  • wow not into this music but just had to stay to the end..very nice.

  • love her runs, hair, dress, trills, voice, everything!! this was just pleasing to listen to. thank you smoothiw!!

  • Love her voice, but her dress...xD

  • I'd prefer the one with andre rieu and carla mafioletti

  • THAT WAS AN Eb OH MY GOSH! INCREDIBLE SUPPORT. i am obsessed with her. check out the vilja song, it is AWESOME

  • Sry but the original goes higher to the Ab!!! :D check out other videos of this song! the end is missing...

  • No, the original note is an Eb, but some sopranos like Natalie Dessay, changed it to a superhigh Ab, I like both versions, though =)

  • you are suppose to sing cute like a child because it is a doll. stupid comments from dragonfly51990

  • That is the most pure high g I have ever heard on this song. Great job to her!

  • she is the best!!! thank you for posting this beautiful lady and her lovely song!!!

  • lol I love this. it's adorable. I love when she hits the high note in the end. This has to be one of my favorite songs to hear performed because the interpretations can be so different.

  • That dress is so pretty on her.

  • Brillant voice, but she's not the best doll. I love her anyway!

  • wonderful performance =]

  • her singing of this is much more accurate that many interpretations of it, which to some is more desirable, me being one of the some.

  • omg, so fun!

  • gosh she's fantastic!!

  • This is One of the Best's Interpretations of the Song, if not the better.

Bravo Sumi!

  • i loved her interpretation. i just heard this in master class last week.

  • He he she waves the fan faster...

What magnificent control. If I had like half of her talent I'd be doing pretty well

    LOL LOL LOL

When you audio preview this well and control RHYME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOLO LOLOLOLOLOLO

  • I love this!

  • wow..Bravo~~!!

  • incredible!!great!!! bravo!!! from my point of view she is the best soprano i've ever heard.

  • Beautiful, Bravo!!!!!

  • THIs is sooooo amazing!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE HER!!!!

  • I love her control of dynamics!

  • I wonder how did she produce a kind of strange sound before winding up? I t was so funny to me, she sounded like she had swallowed something.

  • This is one of Sumi Jo's favorite songs to preform. I've seen her perform twice, and she picked this one for an encore.

She has been touring with her pianist, Vincenzo Scalera, for many years, and they have great stage chemistry. If you're close enough to the stage you can see him laughing!

  • Very, very good!

  • Man, this girl's got some RANGE. I am duly impressed... excellent performance :)

  • My jaw dropped.

  • Yes the eyelashes are FESTY!!!!!!!!!!!

    :(

  • I agree that they are playing and making music with each other. Perhaps it would be different if I was able to be there in person. And I'll admit that it's not fair for me to criticize when I'm not fully aware of the scope of the concert. And i agree with the public's reaction. She did very well. =)

  • 0.59

The fuckin hardest part to sing in tune

she did a great job though

    what a beautiful voice.

    for a beautiful song

  • Es una genia :)

  • this is fabulous, she is my new favorite opera singer! and she's so cute!!

  • Gratulation an Sumi Jo!...Eine der schweren

    Koloraturarien mit hoher Präzision gesungen,

    ganz hervorragend !!!

  • A very good rendition of this famous aria, although her voice is slightly lacking in volume and warmth.

By the way, everyone who has seen this opera knows that Olympia is an automaton, a machine, and not a doll. And anyone calling this brilliant piece of music "doll song" has no respect for Jacques Offenbach´s creation and will be subjected to my scorn for contempt of the composer.

  • last note is TOO muchfun to simg!

  • Holy good heavens...that was quite an entertaining performance. Lovely singing, lovely acting.

    wow

  • Did she wear blue contact lenses?

  • You are just too funny...:)
