If you watch Chet Atkins very much you notice real fast that he got a lot done without jumping around like a po-go stick. Connie is just gushing out music and song here and hardly more that her lips moving and heart beating. Yes, that Marty Stewart fell into the arms of the right woman here, that lucky guy.
The Rolls-Royce of female country singers, sit down Taylor, shut up and listen to how it is done witout being mostly unclothed, and good looks, oh and something else you will never be blessed with---talent!
I have been a Connie Smith Fan since 1977,I think Connie and Loretta Lynn are the best singers around.Really enjoying your Connie Videos. Thanks for sharing them!!
Isn't she terrific! This is my favorite Connie Smith song--the way she sings the first syllable of each line is incredible--no one else can do it. But I prefer the steel guitar version of the song.
Taylor Swift; are you out there? I sure hope so. You need to talk to Connie Smith. But then on second thought; forget it Taylor; you could practice till the day you pass away; and you could never develop vocals like Connie!! Connie knows Country Music; and Connie can sing!!
How well I remember seeing Connie Smith in person at WTAP TV in Parkersburg, WV just as her career was getting started. What a beautiful woman and a top-notch country singer. She is truly a queen of the Grand Ol' Opry.
I grew up through the 60s enjoying Connie and many others that sang (from the heart) REAL country music. And I admit that I fell in love with her not long after she began her career. She is simply the best; she has no peers. What passes for "country" music today is what I refer to as the bastard child of pop and rock. It is neither country nor music. Connie is the real thing!
3 months before I made my entrance to the world. Wow I LOVE the vintage footage of Connie and all the other great country artists of this era, thats when country was really country, listen to that piano!!
Could just listen to this one over and over. This has always been my favorite of all her songs, and she sings it great here. Lord, that lady can sing!!
@kimeytonk I agree completely! To be fair though, Weldon Myrick played this intro on pedal steel. Jerry Byrd, who played non-pedal steel, was playing on this taping. He probably thought it best to let the piano man (Jerry Whitehurst, I think) take the intro here.

The piano part is wonderful. That picker is Jerry Whitehurst, who used to play keyboards on Grand Ole Opry staff band.

I thought that was Floyd Cramer. I admit I'm no expert... but he SOUNDS like Floyd with that "slip note" styling.

By that I mean I like the Steel kick better. You just can't replace the steel guitar with a any other instrument. There should be a law against it.
kimeytonk 3 years ago 17
I agree! Pedal steel just makes country music even better.
