The Yub Nub song is so fucking stupid for the ending. The new song they put in is much better, creates a greater sense of achievement and its more emotional. As for the young anakin ghost, personally, i like it, im not saying the old one was crap or anything but i can see why they did it. And to be fair, it does make sense, because that was the last time anakin looked fucking human. So how could his ghost represent an aged version, without and horrific burns?
@canuck21 It really didn't make sense, especially since Anakin would be 50 years old at the time of ROTJ. Sebastian Shaw made sense in that aspect more than Hayden. I mean heck, even my father looks aged from the pictures showing he and my mother with me as a baby versus when he turned 50. This included putting on weight, graying hairs, and so on. It made sense to have Anakin portrayed by an older man, because he would have aged 25 years since his fateful event on Mustafar.
I don't get it ..Anakin dies as an old man? really i don't get it. Anakin dies when he becomes a lord sith right? so he became darth vader and that's all, and then he dies beig darth vader..so that ghost have never existed ..right? :/
@thereallindafreeman Anakin dies as Anakin in episode 6 (tries to protect his son; kills the emperor) And even if as DV, why should he not appears as an ghost if he knows how. The art of being a "ghost" after death can be learned according to Yoda. Noone states you need to be a jedi to master it.
The bad thing about the new ending is that a young Anakin appears as the ghost - for me it doesn't make any sense, it should be an old man like it was in the original movie.
@sulev15 but anakin can obviously change the way his ghost looks because if he stayed the way he looked as he died, his ghost would have all the burn scars he had when he was unmasked. it make since he would shape to look how he appeared before he went to the darkside.
@Allistar123 i think you shouldn't take the small things too seriously. No one tells you what they can't and can do, believe what you will, but it just doesn't make ay sense why he would want to look young.
If it weren't for Anakin's new Force Ghost, I would've favored the new ending over the old. But as long as Hayden Christiansen stays as that force ghost, I'll always like this one better.
i just hate it that darth vader had to die just when he became "good"... or at least i want STAR WARS 7! just to clear thing up you know... or idk..maybe it was better to leave some things unsolved just for our imagination... i really would have hoped that lucas would have made another trilogy instead of releasing all movies remade in 3D..
I didn't have an issue with Lucas adding the scenes of people across the galaxy celebrating the fall of the Empire. I think that was an improvement. But he shouldn't have replaced the ending song (this one is much more upbeat than the slow, sad one that replaced it), and he certainly shouldn't have replaced Vader's ghost. WHAT THE BLOODY HELL WAS HE THINKING?!
Let's face facts here: they're Lucas's movies. He can do whatever he wants with them. And he's going to no matter how much we fans hate it. There's nothing we can do about it. That's just the way it is.
I honestly can't decide which I like better. Overall, I hate the ending. I mean, maybe it's just my sense to want to find out what happens next (epsecially in the Han/Leia world...and I do, but Courtship sucks, LOL) and I don't like the "picture" for the end. As for the Darth Vader ghost. It's fine either way in my opinion. I mean, having Hayden would make sense considering it was his "former self" and they talk about how Darth wasn't even a man...while Anakin was, but I still like the original.
The newer ending is better because when people in the future watch the entire Star Wars series for the first time, having Hayden in the picture will be more understandable.
George Lucas has got to stop editing. First Greedo shooting first, then the victory Ewok song, and even having stupid Hayden as a Force Ghost. Next, Leia will have a sweater in Jabba's Palace, and Chewbacca will have subtitles...actually I don't mind Chewy having subtitles.
Anakin was forgiven of his sins and is welcomed back to the good side of the force, even after killing billions on Alderaan. Well ok thats cool. What we didnt know is that he killed all the youngling jedi at the jedi temple. I dont know if that can be forgiven, even by Catholic standards.
@Raijinald well now that we know what Anakin actually looks like it actually makes more sense to replace Sebastian with Hayden doesn't it? since Jedis take on their full organic appearance just before their death. It makes the Star Wars series more canonical. you may not like it but it's the truth
Oh, and the fact that Anakin's ghost is recognizable as the face behind Vader's mask is rather important. With Christensen there, it's just some dude.
The old ending was what I watched on my old vhs player back in the 90s. And even though the new ending song is beautiful, I always felt that it didn't really mesh with the rest of the soundtrack. And that bs about the whole galaxy being suddenly liberated because the rebels managed to kill the emperor. These scenes take place at most a few hours after the Death Star goes boom!
The newer version is wayyy better, look at the ghost part. Whether It be Shaw or Hayden, I don;t care I like both, I meant the music part, the ghost part with this yub bub is horrible, there's no emotion behind the ghosts, the new one is amazing!
I grew up with the 97 version and only saw the original when I was very young so didnt really remember it well. I must say seeing them again I like slot of the 97 version especially getting rid of that god offal song at the end of jedi
I prefer the music for the new ending. It just seems more fitting for their victory. But I do wish they hadn't stuck in Hayden Christiansen. I suppose it could be argued that they brought in Anakin's Force ghost as he was before becoming tainted by the Dark Side of the Force. But the way I see it, Vader ceased to exist when he saved his son's life and destroyed the Emperor, and he became Anakin Skywalker once again.
I like this version because they *didn't* defeat the Empire in Jedi. They killed the emperor. That's it. They didn't magically crush the government. This ending made you feel there were battles still to fight, more story left to unfold. Making Haden into a ghost is ridiculous, and cheapens the emotional weight of the scene. I will admit that I like the '97 song, but switching out Vader's ghost ruins the ending. I don't care if I sound petty either, this is youtube, I'm allowed to be petty.
I still like this ending better. When the strings come in as Luke is looking at his father (read:not a teenage brat) it really has so much emotion that the newer one is missing. While it's partly because this is the version I grew up with, now that I'm older it's also the father/son connection they're sharing that has so much more meaning. The newer version loses that since Anakin isn't really a father figure any longer.
@ChocolateisIsNice It just depends on what era you grew up with I guess. If the newer ending came first everyone would of liked it and if this was switched with the newer one, everyone would of been WTF?! what did they do to Anakin/Vader?!?! So It just reallys what time they grew up with star wars. But they honestly shouldn't bash on Lucas for editing his own work. You don't like it? stick to the non editted versions sheesh.
Who's the third Jedi that appears in the end? So far I hear it's either Anakin or Qui Gon. So who is it really? I'm new to Star Wars :D Yes I've been missing out I know
I spent the entire summer camped at my local movie theater when RotJ cane out...the new ending is total yuck, not so much bc of the Anakin sub but bc of the disgrace of replacing Ewoks rocking out with the musical equivalent of warm vomit.
Lucas fell into the fan-worship of Star Wars. With the newer version, he felt he had to make a "proper" ending, as if it were "the story of the Empire". But really, this ending was appropriate because the fight didn't involve all the cities and people of the Empire; it was just about the central characters, and the Ewoks played a major and somewhat humorous role. I like how this seems like the ending of an "Episode" and not a Lord-of-the-Rings style "Epic".
im not going to criticize this because i didn't grow up with it or see it first I saw the other ending where they show different planets, that was the first version i ever saw so i got used to it so im not going to say this is bad because i am sure if i saw this version first i would love it.
I like that the music kicks in right when you realize it's Darth Vader, or Anakin. I love this ending more, because in my book, Anakin was revived when he destroyed the emperor, and from that moment on was no longer Darth Vader....In my book. Also seeing your father at that age when you are kinda the older than that Image or what ever? I dunno it just doesn't make sense.
I've never complained about the special editions to New Hope and Empire but I hated some of the changes to Return of the Jedi. ESPECIALLY the removal of this song! I used to hum this tune when I was little. It was my fondest memory of the Star Wars saga. Then came some generic tune and it broke my heart.
@iDARKSPAWN I could argue with you for days about how he ruined many parts of the originals and how bad of a person he really is, but I can see that would be a waste of my time.
@B1o2e3rg4e5r6 and i can tell you are a middle aged retard that will never change with the times and is no longer worthy of being a part of the human race
@B1o2e3rg4e5r6 WOW look at the response time!.. what we have here folks is a faceless degenerate weakling who thinks they have the right to judge others creations this specimen also seems to think theyre some kind of intelliectual...
@iDARKSPAWN Wait wait wait wait wait......... People do not have the right to judge the work of others??? The fuck? I have never heard anything so idiotic in my life... Well, except maybe from Scientologists...
And by the way, you responded just as fast as I did, so that's not really an argument.
@B1o2e3rg4e5r6 yawn grammer nazi...you really need a bettter job troll and what i meant by judging is if you dont like it then fuck off nobody is holding a gun to your head i hope out of spite that lucas never releases the originals on blu ray just to fuck you die hard fanboys off hurry up with some witty comeback you worthless piece of shit i could do this all day
@iDARKSPAWN "If you don't like it, then fuck off. Nobody is holding a gun to your head"
So what you are saying is, even if you don't like what someone is doing or saying, fuck off because you don't have the right to judge them and tell them they are wrong.
I'm not sure whether or not I like the original 1983 ending, or the 1997 special edition ending more. I prefer the music in the special edition, but the added effects are with Tatooine and Coruscant are shit, but I really don't like the ending song to the original. But it feels a bit better though.
New or old it doesn't matter I always get tears in my eyes when Luke sees the ghosts, especially now that I'm 22 and older, idk why I do but u just tear up. And yes Qui Gon Jin should be added.
@CommadorDecker agreed, Qui-Gon should have been added. the whole theme of all the movies is fatherhood or father figures. that's why it was Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin there because they were all like fathers to him, and of course Anakin was Luke's father. But Qui-Gon was like a father figure in episode I, so he should have been in this too :)
Honestly the newer ending is better because it shows the galaxy freed on all the other planets. This one doesn't show the ultimate affect of the empire's fall.
I actually liked this ending better, probably because I've known this one since before the "special editions" came out. Now, I'm cool with expanding with scenes that you see in the current versions, but I wish they hadn't cut this song out.
I saw the new song first, and psychologically we're encrypted to like the ones we hear first more, not sure why so it is the way It is. I like
The new song was more of a finale than the childish yub nub, but for the love of all that is good on this earth Hayden Christensen CANNOT ACT!!! He was a shite anakin and on his own almost Ruined the prequel trilogy, get him outta Return of the Jedi and tainting poor Sebastian's role x
@MattLeonBrown That much is true, about Hayden Christensen. He might have been in an episode of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" or two (Christensen is from Canada, you know), but he sure didn't convey the right emotions as Anakin.
@32abazz the kid has a point. It is typical Lucas pacing to have a childlike song follow the death of a father/hero. The chorus from Williams kept the mournful hope from Luke's saga and entwined it with the overall breadth of the entire cast ( ie a full orchestra). However I always enjoyed the irony of the Ewoks ie nature taking down industry so I have no problem with the original its just not as heart wrending as the others. But for the love of god take Christensen out!
this song is ridiculous.I first saw this movie on Christmas 1993.I was 11year old.this song ruined ending of whole saga.thank good that John Williams make change for the better 1997.
I like Hayden more. Me. Not you who read this who might like this version beeter. But I don't hate this at all. No more hate or fights about this matter. Let's all respect what each one likes the most.
anakin dies the moment when he turns to the dark side, so it is no longer anakin, but darth vader, even if he is not wearing armor, according to ben kenobi, a person dies when he turns to the dark side, so anakin died as a young man, vader died as an old man, and in ANH luke's father is addressed as anakin, not vader. as a star wars fan i think lucas didn't make a mistake when he put christensen instead of shaw, but it's my opinion, both endings are great and the yub nub song is awesome :D
Then how is Anakin redeemed? He is redeemed as an old man through his enduring love for his child, this is not possible for Christensen's character as he 'dies' before becoming aware of his children's existance. If we are looking at Vader and Anakin as too different people then we deny Anakin a rebirth and instead relegate Vader as an identity and not a manifest lack of humanity. 0ore than likely Lucas thought people were just too stupid to decipher who Anakin was
@fhostile91 Luke's father's called Anakin, since that's his real name, Darth (something) are just Sith-given names, plus Obi-wan didn't want to tell Luke that Vader is his father, at that point. As for "person dying when they turn to dark side", even if Obi-wan said that (can't recall), that's just part of Jedi philosophy, he may not be right. (and probably isn't, seeing as Anakin returned as a Force ghost)
@fhostile91 Couldn't one argue though that when vader died, he died good? He died as a man who saved his son from the emperor and the dark side of the force. Therefore, they should've left the original actor in there IMO. :)
@fhostile91 The thing is, in the *original* Star Wars, the 1977 version, Darth Vader wasn't Luke's father. Darth Vader was...Darth Vader. Basically like there was a John Vader and Jane Vader, had a kid and named it Darth. The concept of "Darth Vader" being Luke's father wasn't created until the Empire Strikes Back was being written. Anakin Skywalker was genuinely 100% dead in Star Wars, as a stand alone film.
@fhostile91 Your justification misses the point entirely. Whether Ben believed that you die when you turn to the dark side or was justifying the lies Luke had been told is irrelevant. The climax of the entire series is the realization that the assertion is not true.
Luke: No. You're coming with me. I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you.
Anakin: You already... have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister... you were right.
I remember the first time I watched this ending. Then when I bought the Classics on Blu-Ray, the new ending with Haden was complete BS. He should stay with the prequels. And like everyone is saying, Anakin should have been looking a little bit older as he is in this version when he is a ghost.
I'm in my thirties, and I loved episodes 4, 5 and 6 when I was a child. Ask my parents about those movies, and they'll say they were "cute". It's not because my mom and dad actually liked the movies either. In fact, they don't care for them. But they saw how much I enjoyed them when I was a little person, and that made them happy. ^^ Except for my dad. He liked episode 6, and it wasn't because of the Ewoks. Let's just say he was a big fan of Princess Leia after that!! XD
I think people hated Jar Jar and the idea of Midichlorians so much that they often lump episode three in with episodes one and two. Let's not forget as well that Star Wars really does appeal to children, and most of the people who loved the first three movies when they came out were children, and hated the last three movies because they were approaching middle age. Ask any five year old, and he or she will usually have positive things to say about Jar Jar as well as the Ewoks. ^^
1:28 luke's saber is bouncing around on his belt... but I thought he threw it down the pit of the death star? maybe he just threw it aside.. but in the novelization i remember he threw it down the pit
@KyrieSion I have to agreed with you. If Lucas put the new Anakin he should put Ewan McGregor instead of Sir Alec Guiness. But Luke never saw the true face of his father, only his dark, burned face.
Maybe Lucas though that Anakin joins the force as the image that he had the last time when he was a Jedi Kngiht and not his crappy and evil image from the dark side.
Honestly the only thing I prefer here is Sebastian Shaw as Anakin's ghost. The new version totally misses the point. Death doesn't erase his years as Vader. It just frees him from the suit. He finally gets to look like the man he should have been. The original is really a beautiful ending.
The other changes are pretty effective though. The celebration on Endor is a fitting ending to this movie, but the celebration throughout the galaxy is a fitting ending to the saga as a whole.
fireworks makes me sad. in the end, darth vader dies as an old man and boy he was happy when he's dead as good man. correct me if im wrong. i fucking love star wars, may force be with you!
This ending is more likely. Come on there celebrating the empire being destroyed. They're going to be playing ewok party music not "epic" music. And young anikan just doesn't make sense
I have respect for both versions, although the Hayden Christensen ghost is more appropriate The whole premise is the death of Anakin as a "jedi' not Darth Vader. Obi Wan died an older Jedi (along with Yoda) so they should appear old. That obviously would not have made sense to us in 1983, but now it would sense the series is complete.
For old school people, Sebastian Shaw as Anakin itś a better choice, but, for the new generation of startwar fans (like me XD) the new ghost have a more deep feelig, well, at less to me. StartWars it's for everyone :)
Original is always better.

I spent the entire summer camped at my local movie theater when RotJ cane out...the new ending is total yuck, not so much bc of the Anakin sub but bc of the disgrace of replacing Ewoks rocking out with the musical equivalent of warm vomit.
Cancrizans 1 month ago
Lucas fell into the fan-worship of Star Wars. With the newer version, he felt he had to make a "proper" ending, as if it were "the story of the Empire". But really, this ending was appropriate because the fight didn't involve all the cities and people of the Empire; it was just about the central characters, and the Ewoks played a major and somewhat humorous role. I like how this seems like the ending of an "Episode" and not a Lord-of-the-Rings style "Epic".

New or old it doesn't matter I always get tears in my eyes when Luke sees the ghosts, especially now that I'm 22 and older, idk why I do but u just tear up. And yes Qui Gon Jin should be added.
CommadorDecker 1 month ago
@CommadorDecker agreed, Qui-Gon should have been added. the whole theme of all the movies is fatherhood or father figures. that's why it was Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin there because they were all like fathers to him, and of course Anakin was Luke's father. But Qui-Gon was like a father figure in episode I, so he should have been in this too :)

@MattLeonBrown That much is true, about Hayden Christensen. He might have been in an episode of "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" or two (Christensen is from Canada, you know), but he sure didn't convey the right emotions as Anakin.

32abazz 2 months ago
@32abazz the kid has a point. It is typical Lucas pacing to have a childlike song follow the death of a father/hero. The chorus from Williams kept the mournful hope from Luke's saga and entwined it with the overall breadth of the entire cast ( ie a full orchestra). However I always enjoyed the irony of the Ewoks ie nature taking down industry so I have no problem with the original its just not as heart wrending as the others. But for the love of god take Christensen out!

JamesWEnderson2000 2 months ago
anakin dies the moment when he turns to the dark side, so it is no longer anakin, but darth vader, even if he is not wearing armor, according to ben kenobi, a person dies when he turns to the dark side, so anakin died as a young man, vader died as an old man, and in ANH luke's father is addressed as anakin, not vader. as a star wars fan i think lucas didn't make a mistake when he put christensen instead of shaw, but it's my opinion, both endings are great and the yub nub song is awesome :D
fhostile91 2 months ago 28
Then how is Anakin redeemed? He is redeemed as an old man through his enduring love for his child, this is not possible for Christensen's character as he 'dies' before becoming aware of his children's existance. If we are looking at Vader and Anakin as too different people then we deny Anakin a rebirth and instead relegate Vader as an identity and not a manifest lack of humanity. 0ore than likely Lucas thought people were just too stupid to decipher who Anakin was
tiemedown 2 months ago
@fhostile91 Luke's father's called Anakin, since that's his real name, Darth (something) are just Sith-given names, plus Obi-wan didn't want to tell Luke that Vader is his father, at that point. As for "person dying when they turn to dark side", even if Obi-wan said that (can't recall), that's just part of Jedi philosophy, he may not be right. (and probably isn't, seeing as Anakin returned as a Force ghost)
demoneq 1 month ago
@fhostile91 Couldn't one argue though that when vader died, he died good? He died as a man who saved his son from the emperor and the dark side of the force. Therefore, they should've left the original actor in there IMO. :)
TheDecretus 1 month ago
@fhostile91 The thing is, in the *original* Star Wars, the 1977 version, Darth Vader wasn't Luke's father. Darth Vader was...Darth Vader. Basically like there was a John Vader and Jane Vader, had a kid and named it Darth. The concept of "Darth Vader" being Luke's father wasn't created until the Empire Strikes Back was being written. Anakin Skywalker was genuinely 100% dead in Star Wars, as a stand alone film.
Berengier817 1 month ago
@fhostile91 What a half-arsed explanation lol.
Bulhakas 1 month ago
@fhostile91 Your justification misses the point entirely. Whether Ben believed that you die when you turn to the dark side or was justifying the lies Luke had been told is irrelevant. The climax of the entire series is the realization that the assertion is not true.
Luke: No. You're coming with me. I'll not leave you here, I've got to save you.
Anakin: You already... have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister... you were right.
Christiansen in was a PR move.

XD
luckyshiningstar101 2 months ago
I think people hated Jar Jar and the idea of Midichlorians so much that they often lump episode three in with episodes one and two. Let's not forget as well that Star Wars really does appeal to children, and most of the people who loved the first three movies when they came out were children, and hated the last three movies because they were approaching middle age. Ask any five year old, and he or she will usually have positive things to say about Jar Jar as well as the Ewoks. ^^
luckyshiningstar101 2 months ago
Despite what people say about the prequels, episode 3 was actually pretty good although episodes 1 and 2 were hideous.
