He really had an amazing voice! I met him many years ago when he came to speak at my elementary school graduation. I attended the same school as one of his nephews. My parents were so excited to meet him, and he was both gracious and kind. I was sooo sorry to hear that he passed away. I'm glad there are clips like this so he can be remembered.
Incredible voice , wonderful interpretation. Truly, a great talent. Top to bottom, the voice is true and beautifully controlled, not to mention it's a huge voice.
I chanced on this wonderful singer and great song only yesterday. Power, charisma, sensitivity. It's tragic that he died so young but Thank God we have a little bit of his genius still. I'm anxious to hear anything else he recorded or filmed - any leads would be gratefully received.
I would like to Add that Gilbert Price was a long standing member of the Family who dedicated himself to teaching the kids who could not afford singing lessons not only was he a friend he was our brother and we will never forget him...Juan Shamsul Alam
@bh5606 Think you nailed it with these three letters! Thanks so much for your comment! I'm certain that Gilbert's family/friends are monitoring these comments and will be really as happy as I am to have heard from you!
@OperaBaritoneJoe Hey! Considering your vocal prowess, I'm thrilled by your response to this little clip! Gilbert always seemed to give away his heart in his singing. I think you've that same capability. Work it, Joe!
@varadero1839 Simply stunning. On a personal aside, many many years ago in my first vocal audition in NY, and fresh out of college, I had the opportunity to sing for the inimitable casting legend Shirley Rich. Afterward she said she had not heard a voice like mine since Gilbert Price. Even now years later, I still view that as one of the finest professional compliments of my career. This video is Exhibit A as to why. Thanks so much for posting it. Such a remarkable talent. Such a wonderful gift.
@operasanger Not convinced this will reach you, but here's hoping! Thanks so much for your comment and info on Mr. Price. Also, any chance of hearing what Ms. Rich found so intriguing? I'd be honored!
@varadero1839 So very gracious of you to respond. I'm also extremely flattered that you expressed some interest in hearing what Ms. Rich heard, but I'm pretty sure that none of my work from those early days has ever found its way to YouTube. While that's perhaps a mixed blessing, I do enjoy this forum's anonymity. So please let's just say that all these years later, I remain a huge fan of Mr. Price's extraordinary talent. I only wish I'd had the privilege of meeting and hearing him live! Best!
@operasanger Happy to hear from you again! Still can't reach you, but I understand your reluctance. I think I mentioned that I saw Gilbert several times live, but never met him. What an honor that would have been!! Would that some of your earlier accomplishments had reached YT! Who knows? It took me about 4 years to even find these few clips by Mr. Price. Someone may be "hoarding" some clips of yours!
@varadero1839 Great hearing from you again! Pity you never met Gilbert, as you do such a terrific job of keeping the memory of his talent alive. On a separate note, if there are any clips of my own early work around, they remain well hidden! Finally, please forgive me, but I noticed another of your clips from Timbuktu!, "Night of My Nights". I can comfortably advise you that your clip is actually not Gilbert, but Bruce Hubbard - another tremendous talent & gracious soul gone much too soon. Best.
@zannelove Thanks so much for your having acknowledged superb Mr. Price! I think every time someone comments on these few videos, his family members, friends and I go through the roof! Actually I think of the A. E. Housman poem "To An Athlete Dying Young." It's so reminds me of Gilbert. Bottom line is he left us way too soon.
@bh5606 Hi bh5606! Thanks so much for your comment; it makes me a believer again! Granted, there was a background group then, but Gilbert could have made this an a cappella piece; no orchestra, group or pyro-technics, and still have made this one of the best performances ever! I'm so grateful for your comments! I suggest that his family would agree, and be very proud!
As his companion from 1961 until his death from a faulty propane heater while he was sleeping in Vienna, Austria, 2 January 1991, I am amazed that some kind soul found this clip and posted it. His grandmother from the island of St. Kitts was my friend, I arranged his memorial, and his siblings' grandchildren keep in touch with me. Thanks to whoever was able to find this clip and post it. Warren Allen Smith, New York City
@Loveachild1000 You're welcome! There were very few who are, or were greater. If only for a little while, Gilbert was "Broadway Royalty!" His friendship, charm and incredible talent will always be missed.
thank you so much for your comments i dont think to many people new that gil was one of few that was called back to the ed sullivan show he didnt have to many repeat performers but i was told that mr sullivan like gils voice the family thanks you for all your comments
Enjoy it folks! He had it all. An unbelievable voice, style, and so much passion! His singing is seamless and simply miraculous. The end is remarkable,
It is not every day a performace leaves me speechless. This performance does. What a voice, the man oozes sheer class. Look at the economy of movement in his performance. A supremely gifted man. I will be back to it again and again
This is definitely from the Ed Sullivan Show; I've seen it before in reruns. Price was terrific, one of our best musical theatre singers and performers -- fabulous voice and presence:) --

It's too bad he wasn't more of a commercial success. It's hard to find any of his recordings, so it's nice to see these TV clips.
