I've Gotta be Me! Mr. Gilbert Price

He really had an amazing voice! I met him many years ago when he came to speak at my elementary school graduation. I attended the same school as one of his nephews. My parents were so excited to meet him, and he was both gracious and kind. I was sooo sorry to hear that he passed away. I'm glad there are clips like this so he can be remembered.

I chanced on this wonderful singer and great song only yesterday. Power, charisma, sensitivity. It's tragic that he died so young but Thank God we have a little bit of his genius still. I'm anxious to hear anything else he recorded or filmed - any leads would be gratefully received.

On a personal aside, many many years ago in my first vocal audition in NY, and fresh out of college, I had the opportunity to sing for the inimitable casting legend Shirley Rich. Afterward she said she had not heard a voice like mine since Gilbert Price. Even now years later, I still view that as one of the finest professional compliments of my career. This video is Exhibit A as to why. Thanks so much for posting it. Such a remarkable talent. Such a wonderful gift.

I'm also extremely flattered that you expressed some interest in hearing what Ms. Rich heard, but I'm pretty sure that none of my work from those early days has ever found its way to YouTube. While that's perhaps a mixed blessing, I do enjoy this forum's anonymity. So please let's just say that all these years later, I remain a huge fan of Mr. Price's extraordinary talent. I only wish I'd had the privilege of meeting and hearing him live! Best!

@operasanger Happy to hear from you again! Still can't reach you, but I understand your reluctance. I think I mentioned that I saw Gilbert several times live, but never met him. What an honor that would have been!! Would that some of your earlier accomplishments had reached YT! Who knows? It took me about 4 years to even find these few clips by Mr. Price. Someone may be "hoarding" some clips of yours!

I can comfortably advise you that your clip is actually not Gilbert, but Bruce Hubbard - another tremendous talent & gracious soul gone much too soon. Best.

@zannelove Thanks so much for your having acknowledged superb Mr. Price! I think every time someone comments on these few videos, his family members, friends and I go through the roof! Actually I think of the A. E. Housman poem "To An Athlete Dying Young." It's so reminds me of Gilbert. Bottom line is he left us way too soon.

Granted, there was a background group then, but Gilbert could have made this an a cappella piece; no orchestra, group or pyro-technics, and still have made this one of the best performances ever! As his companion from 1961 until his death from a faulty propane heater while he was sleeping in Vienna, Austria, 2 January 1991, I am amazed that some kind soul found this clip and posted it. His grandmother from the island of St. Kitts was my friend, I arranged his memorial, and his siblings' grandchildren keep in touch with me. Thanks to whoever was able to find this clip and post it.
