How underrated is this? just heard it on the digital radio channel, "Aussie", never hear it on any other channel and he never plays it live either, have no idea why.
The greatma has his reasons for not playing any songs. I saw him last week in Sydney at the Opra house with The Bull sister's and a 19 piece orchestra . Amazing show !
I saw a cranky PK at a show some time back when some drunk in the crowd shout " sing Billy". Pk shot him down saying " I am not a Fu$%KING juke box !"
I too thibk the DOTS had same great songs and hope one day the great man decides to do them again....
@robertjusher I went to a book singing in september of last year and they asked PK to sing Bill Baxter..... he outright refused... PK suggested to the interviewer that he sing it, Kelly said he wants to get rid of his first two albums.
Billy is a real person who used to work on film crews with Chris Langman..(original Dots)...the song was written one drunken night after too many rounds of poker..started out as like a Who take but the Ska beat came later..big mistake 'cos all the pork pie hat Ska nuts started showing up and yhis was the only song we had with that beat...Chris Worrall (in background with firebied)
I love this song. I swapped with a mate, I got Talk and he got my Zenyatta Mondatta green vinyl disk by the Police. I still think I got the best of the deal.
yyayaya!!!! I begged Paul to play this at his gig in Soho, sitting next to him at a cafe and he said he wouldnt it was too old :( BUT Here it is !!! yay!!!
Awesome to see a clip for this classic song. Billy Baxter used to head a band called Billy Baxter and the hollow men - they released an EP - Blue trains and gravel lanes - a brilliant recording. This was the first song I ever heard by Paul Kelly and it was the start of a long love affair with his music - at the time I was a Baxter fan and thought this ode to Billy was funny. I can still picture Paul Kelly singing this on Hey Hey it's Saturday (in the morning!) Damn I'm old...
Paul Kelly says Billy Baxter was a friend of his and Chris's (co-writer) and they exaggerated his character in this song. I'm wondering if he's the same Billy Baxter that is on Coodabeen Champions radio program (broadcast on ABC) which originated in Melbourne where Paul Kelly lives...

@robertjusher He was right to do that though, if he doesn't want to play it... he doesn't have too.

Billy Baxter is a personal friend of mine. I've met him many times and he knows me. I've seen him perform with the Hollow Men. They're really good!
