i gave it a try for like 6 months on my arch box . installed a phlatoria of plugins in the mean time just to make it usable. and today I switched back to fxce Im a happy man again. gnome 3 looks pretty but at the end it's very frustrating. xfce offers everything I need in it doesnt get in my way.
lxde/xfce FTW, although PCManFM/Thunar suck compared to Nautilus. they can't handle smb/nfs protocols! such a bad joke! I hate gnome3/unity so much. I hope they die soon. well, at least in gnome shell you don't have this annoying useless sidebar/launcher unity has. is gnome2 completely abandoned by now? I miss it so much ='( I can't understand how one can have gnome3 shell on the desktop computer and actually like it. multitasking on this sh*t is just horrible. I hate it so much aaaghrrrr X#''
Having been a constant user of GNOME for 12 years now, I decided to leave it. I hope, I'll never have to see -or even think of- that pile of shit that GNOME has now become ever again in my life.
That's just my opinion. God I don't know where I'm gonna go, I was considering going back to Windows even. It at least is familier but I see Win 8 looks to do something nuts too. Really what's so bad about how OS's look and act? Or perhaps I am beginning to age.
I have to disagree that Gnome 2 looks dated. I think it's beautiful and quite usable. You know, easy to use, the way I like it. I'm pretty aggravated that the development team has decided that I don't like interacting with my computer how I do and that the way needs to change. I'm pretty annoyed. I seriously don't need another launcher. Here "User" launch this, then this, then look through these pages to find what you want. Good luck finding out how many instances of that program is running too.
I was about to leave it as well, but then found out about the extensions. Classic tray icons, a GNOME 2-like menu (not Fallback), and even a bottom panel with a window list have managed to convince me to keep it. This desktop environment is not as bad as some paint it, although I still miss GNOME 2.
The only thing i fucking hate about it is the default theme and that the top panel is way too big. Overall it is pretty good but i will stay with KDE cause thats just perfect
Putting close on the middle mouse button is bad because it can easily be pressed by accident. Its clear that the designers of gnome 3 have studied human computer interaction, because gnome 3 is simply great.
It's extremely stable thus far... everything just works(technically and visually). Customization could be more standard, but it's not hard with a couple of extra tools. I always configured my gnome to 1top panel(rarely used, usually hidden), gnome-do for launching, and docky. For me this is perfect... Super+App name->enter = FAST launching, just like how I would set up gnome-do. My only gripe is it seems like the bar on top of windows is a little big, and could be reduces for more screen space.
using it and liking it! chat on pop ups is much cooler than chatting in regular windows. They made the graphics on the shell really nice. To bad that the gtk theme is not the same as the shell.. would be nice to have that shiny ghraphic when scrolling thru maps and vids etc

@DancingMadRB3 You can't customize it because It's new and nobody knows how but I believe the themes are unpacked css and js so It's actually as hackable as it gets. I heard somewhere gnome are trying to keep the style the same across every copy like windows does. Use gnome-tweak-tool to change the Gtk theme
I leave Gnome already since 2.x appear. Are Linux Users really so dumb and exchange a powerful Desktop or Window Manager with such a limited but eye candy crap?

I'm mostly a win7 user (before drowns me in waters of windows-hate, i use it for my JOB), and i use good ol' gnome interface on my linux. may sound like a nitpick, but I think they could have left that min/max button. I'm getting used to it, I hated it at first, but now that I've found the gnome tweak tool, and dconf-editor I'm starting to get used to it. I still find myself wildly swinging my mouse around looking for ways to activate other windows. The dock is your friend. As is the windows key.

@gobletu: you say that the screen recorder that comes pre-installed with gnome 3 doesn't use audio recording. Can you tell me what software you used for this video please? I've installed gtkrecordmydektop but it doesn't work in my laptop with Gnome 3 and gnome shell installed. I always have used it found it to be a great piece of software, anything similar for gnome 3? Thanks in advance!
With KDE4, Gnome, Windows and OSX all "merging" into more or less the same ipad-ish kind of user interface - why would I prefer any of them over the other? I totally fail to see how such "standardization" is a good thing, for me all these systems today are hopelessly ineffective in terms of getting work done, since they all copy all the more or less useless bling and misfeatures from one-another.
@kowoba You're using a keyboard layout optimized for typing machines and I don't hear you complaining about it. Sad to see innovative desktops like BumpTop going silent, even when they were bought by Google.
Nice vid, only started really getting in the Shell today but I'm digging it now. I'm not afraid of the whole Gnome 3 thing now..Unity on the other hand...ugh. I'm glad we still got the awesomeness of kde and an improving Gnome 3/Shell lolz
I guess i should leave it because I got:: Could not update .ICEauthority file /home/$USER/.ICEauthority" and i got no solution where anywhere.. #solution didnt work..
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 ... but I have problems, after I installed Gnome 3, when I start gdm there is msgbox "Could not update .ICEauthority file /home/$USER/.ICEauthority" .. I searched in forums, this problem is quite often, but no solution anywhere :(
You don't seem to have any graphical issues. Is it because you don't use ati? If you do, please tell me which driver you have installed. Thanks, and nice review.
gnome 3 sux. Who the fuck thought that the task bar or the always visible tray were unnecessary? And why is it downloading pulseaudio on arch as dependence?? Wtf... I also don't have the hibernation button. And what's that with the need to do special magic button clicks to execute a new instance of a running program? I certainly don't like gnome 3.
Nice. I've Given Gnome 3 a bit of a hard time lately.... It definately looks and works nicely... takes a bit of getting use to.... but not happy that it is overly dumbed down and lacks alot of functionality that should be offered out of the box instead of fucking around with tweaks/scripts etc. But it sure as hell is alot nicer than Unity... I hope they extend the functionality in the near future... I may move back to Gnome then ;)
How did you get that theme? When i installed Gnome 3 on 11.04 i ended up with the old Gnome theme. It's not that much of a problem but aesthetically it bothers me =P
I have tried both Gnome3 and Ubuntu 11.04, and they are nice and fast in my dell Inspiron 1720; for me Ubuntu was easier to use, but it's just a matter of personal taste, nice to have this options; however I'm not ready for the huge leap they are, I'm more used to my compiz-fusion plus cairo dock desktop in Ubuntu 10.10
Maybe its just me, but I hate the mix of shortcuts and running programs. Its a huge pain when you want to have a lot of shortcuts and also have about 50 windows open with 20+ of those being different apps. Thats pretty much how I run on a daily basis with all my web dev stuff. I have the same problem with the new unity. I do like the workspace management better on unity/gnome3 though. But for now, im stuck with gnome classic. =/
upgraded desktop and laptop today ill be changing distros tomorrow most likely debian or gentoo but if this is the future of gnome i can see myself using xfce or fluxbox pretty soon
okay how does it look like that for u. for me its said upgrade completed with errors. the dash is there, but everything else isn't different beside no task bars
Hmm, I'm looking forward to install the full version today :)
It really is a mix between apple and microsoft now tbh... But this might actually be better for the programming workflow... IF there are shortkeys for switching workspaces ofcourse, since I use that A LOT :p
Well no matter how "outdated" gnome 2 is it has one serious advantage over gnome 3:
You can CUSTOMIZE it!
You are not limited to what the gnome 3 team demands you to use, you can customize the panels, the panels colors and not stuck with a lame black background.
And you can actually log out without having to go to the log in screen!
looks nice. I just have 1 problem with the buttons. it's not like im gonna miss them, but i will miss the functionality of minimizing. in my personal opinion, if you delete something by default, add replacement for it by default. i mean, maximazing its already there, just add minimize by default too. I know it can be added via terminal, but for new users it will be inconvenient.
Heads up ! Windows DID NOT INVENT THE SNAP WINDOWS! I have been using it for years on Compiz. Great review except for the boasting of windows features on Ubuntu/Gnome3 that was already there before windows. These new UI are becoming a new standard for future operating systems/devices that utilize a touch screen! This is just the beginning of all the new UI on the way!
@richiedaze should look up the definition of aero snap, dragging windows to tile left and right, fullscreen. loL compiz grid u dont drag. Yes is similar but get real is a str8 rip. No windows didnt invent it, but they made it popular and well implemented
Hey, what about GNOME 3 OS, i just installed Gnome 3 but it looks the same as SUSE, and I dont really like it. and to do so you need to switch to Gnome-shell --replace.
@gotbletu No Disrespect toward your video or yourself. I was simply returning the rightful credit to where it belongs... Again, thank you for your time and opinions on this video. I am looking forward on your review on Gnome3 tweek tool.
@richiedaze not sure what u mean, if u want to give credit where credit is due, then u should be thanking MS, since the aero snap feature is what it is, tiling on drag, restore windows size when u pull it down, are u denying it cuz is MS? And if your talking tiling feature in general, i believe some other os had this way b4 compiz showed up
@gotbletu There are many different types of snap windows - etc, etc, and etc - as well as countless styles. Exactly who invented the snap windows is a matter of opinion!
@richiedaze whether u want to admit it or not is up to u, but is not a coincidence that after win7 came out with the aero snap feature, everyone start making it exactly like that. I'll end it here becuz is a waste of time arguing over something that is this obvious to everyone else
I really appreciate what the gnome team and Canonical have done with gnome3 and Unity, but I hate both. (But i think unity > gnome3). So looks like im moving to KDE.
@america0014 gtk theme works on gnome2, not sure if u can apply those to gnome3 yet, emerald requires compiz i believe, so no u cant use that on gnomeshell
@gotbletu That sucks but I guess it's cool. Gnome Shell still looks really good. I don't like the process windows though. Is there more themes on Gnome Shell?
I haven't tried Gnome 3 but looks like they did a good job. Looks a hell alot better than Unity even though they're similar. BUT what's the deal with Gnome 3 and compiz? Though I heard something about that. Anyways good vid Gotbletu!
@xpawnrip You have to check the repo for "Gnome tweak tool" and check "let file manager handle desktop" or whatever. I hate it that the people behind Gnome doesn't want anyone else to use the desktop. What else would it be good for anyway? A picture album?
It looks great but as you are a mouse user what I am, than Gnome 3 is tereble. Unity is a bit better is some things with only a mouse but Gnome 2 is still the best.
Why make tablet software for a desktop pc? Unity does the same. New people don't now the sort cuts and left and right click. I tested it. It skares new users away. Don't update 11.04 as you want to use Unity or classic because it distroise it. You need to fix it to get them working again. It did that on all my pc's. Gnome 2 for me.
i gave it a try for like 6 months on my arch box . installed a phlatoria of plugins in the mean time just to make it usable. and today I switched back to fxce Im a happy man again. gnome 3 looks pretty but at the end it's very frustrating. xfce offers everything I need in it doesnt get in my way.

Nice vid, only started really getting in the Shell today but I'm digging it now. I'm not afraid of the whole Gnome 3 thing now..Unity on the other hand...ugh. I'm glad we still got the awesomeness of kde and an improving Gnome 3/Shell lolz

I'm going to try this. I couldn't deal with Unity, as much as I wanted to like it. Too buggy still.

You don't seem to have any graphical issues. Is it because you don't use ati? If you do, please tell me which driver you have installed. Thanks, and nice review.

@MrPhilinggood i got an nvidia card, but i used the open source drivers.

gnome 3 sux.
ShwangShwing 10 months ago

KisukeTenshi 10 months ago
@KisukeTenshi Install gnome-themes-standard and remove gnome-accessibility-themes
gotbletu 10 months ago
I have tried both Gnome3 and Ubuntu 11.04, and they are nice and fast in my dell Inspiron 1720; for me Ubuntu was easier to use, but it's just a matter of personal taste, nice to have this options; however I'm not ready for the huge leap they are, I'm more used to my compiz-fusion plus cairo dock desktop in Ubuntu 10.10
intestinomedicino 10 months ago
Maybe its just me, but I hate the mix of shortcuts and running programs. Its a huge pain when you want to have a lot of shortcuts and also have about 50 windows open with 20+ of those being different apps. Thats pretty much how I run on a daily basis with all my web dev stuff. I have the same problem with the new unity. I do like the workspace management better on unity/gnome3 though. But for now, im stuck with gnome classic. =/

Gnome 3: designed by morons for morons.

xxTellTheTruthxx 10 months ago

This is just the beginning of all the new UI on the way!
richiedaze 10 months ago
@richiedaze should look up the definition of aero snap, dragging windows to tile left and right, fullscreen. loL compiz grid u dont drag. Yes is similar but get real is a str8 rip. No windows didnt invent it, but they made it popular and well implemented
gotbletu 10 months ago
I love it!!!
richiedaze 10 months ago
Hey, what about GNOME 3 OS, i just installed Gnome 3 but it looks the same as SUSE, and I dont really like it. and to do so you need to switch to Gnome-shell --replace.
mulayhafid1 10 months ago
@mulayhafid1 gnome3 is not an OS, is the pretty UI u see
gotbletu 10 months ago
@gotbletu No Disrespect toward your video or yourself. I was simply returning the rightful credit to where it belongs... Again, thank you for your time and opinions on this video. I am looking forward on your review on Gnome3 tweek tool.
richiedaze 10 months ago
@richiedaze not sure what u mean, if u want to give credit where credit is due, then u should be thanking MS, since the aero snap feature is what it is, tiling on drag, restore windows size when u pull it down, are u denying it cuz is MS? And if your talking tiling feature in general, i believe some other os had this way b4 compiz showed up
gotbletu 10 months ago
@gotbletu There are many different types of snap windows - etc, etc, and etc - as well as countless styles. Exactly who invented the snap windows is a matter of opinion!
richiedaze 10 months ago
@richiedaze whether u want to admit it or not is up to u, but is not a coincidence that after win7 came out with the aero snap feature, everyone start making it exactly like that. I'll end it here becuz is a waste of time arguing over something that is this obvious to everyone else
gotbletu 10 months ago 3
@gotbletu So they borrowed Aero Snap. I don't see why that guy is freaking out. Who cares lol
JamesManes 10 months ago
I think they've done a great job with the theme. But, too many unnecessary step are added.

Also do simple things like gtk / emerald themes work on gnome shell??
america0014 10 months ago
@america0014 gtk theme works on gnome2, not sure if u can apply those to gnome3 yet, emerald requires compiz i believe, so no u cant use that on gnomeshell
gotbletu 10 months ago
@gotbletu That sucks but I guess it's cool. Gnome Shell still looks really good. I don't like the process windows though. Is there more themes on Gnome Shell?
america0014 10 months ago
@gotbletu People are making gtk3 themes, just give it time for people to start making awesome themes.

I haven't tried Gnome 3 but looks like they did a good job. Looks a hell alot better than Unity even though they're similar. BUT what's the deal with Gnome 3 and compiz? Though I heard something about that. Anyways good vid Gotbletu!

gotbletu 10 months ago
@xpawnrip You have to check the repo for "Gnome tweak tool" and check "let file manager handle desktop" or whatever. I hate it that the people behind Gnome doesn't want anyone else to use the desktop. What else would it be good for anyway? A picture album?

Can you have GNOME 2.x and GNOME3 and Unity installed and select either at login?
Laoch111 10 months ago
@Laoch111 not at the moment i dont think is possible
gotbletu 10 months ago
@gotbletu So Unity would break GNOME3 (and vice versa)? Could either Unity or GNOME3 be selectable at login with GNOME 2.x?
Laoch111 10 months ago
It looks great but as you are a mouse user what I am, than Gnome 3 is tereble. Unity is a bit better is some things with only a mouse but Gnome 2 is still the best.
Why make tablet software for a desktop pc? Unity does the same. New people don't now the sort cuts and left and right click. I tested it. It skares new users away. Don't update 11.04 as you want to use Unity or classic because it distroise it. You need to fix it to get them working again. It did that on all my pc's. Gnome 2 for me.
