  • See, when layne says don't contact the guys from aid they aren't my friends, he was a liar, if he even said that, they all loved each other. That's the alice i know.

  • it's difficult to understand everything he's saying for not american people...I can understand english, this is a little bit different:-(((

  • Great upload!

  • is this interview made after the "Unplugged"?

  • No homo shit but Im gona comment on a Layne Staley video for the first time n say I think I actually love this man who I never met.

    Woah!

  • wake up kids. this is a Layne interview!!!!!!

  • Jesus, Layne had to put up with so much bullshit from press. That probably helped lead to his reclusive behavior.

  • layne stayle is like the only person, famous or not, that i've ever been able to relate to at all

  • no idea why people keep trying to compare singers or bands, just because they might be considered contemporaries in the same genre and were around at the same time, doesn't mean one or the other was better..they had their own styles, set of songs, different singing styles etc and will appeal in different ways to different people..I don't see the point mentioning Nirvana or Kurt Cobain, none at all..

  • Nirvana and Chains are polar opposites. AIC is WAY better! They can play more then three chords. I like Nirvana but they were pixie punks as I call them.

  • The audio in this is phenomenal. I'm listening to it on headphones and I feel like Layne is talking to me from 2 inches away. Every little rasp in his voice is there.

  • really wanna argue about Nirvana and Alice in Chains?? Both amazing and influential bands: the few remaining GOOD rock bands would have been inspired by both bands.

    Shh now.

  • STFU about nirvana. this is about Layne Staley, a masterpiece of a human being. period

  • @slashhudson no masterpiece is perfect

  • @dudewheresmycar206 he was perfect. amazing musician and an amazing soul. if you cant figure that out then you should just leave

  • @slashhudson if you dont understand what i mean by this let me explain to you he was a amazing musician and person however no masterpeice is perfect and he couldnt handle his own demons turning to drugs rather then other ways to deal with them he made mistakes and his addictions took him over. so i can figure out plenty however can you?

  • Rest In peace Layne.. we miss you and never well we forever.... hope your soul has found inner peace.....

  • and tho even tho the bands of that time hated to be considered to be related to the word, it many was a word to try and desribe the sound they made togother it was dirty and made people feel it... and was good to feel dirty .. EXPcustom is spot in what is said about they wrote about real problems... youve just got to Listen to Layne/Kurt.Chris.Eddie,Mark, ect and you get wahat the mean and feel their pain unlike today bands just sing a song... thats all nothing to it...

  • Oh my gid why are people say Alice In Chains/Nirvana EMO. OH dear, where are their ears..... they are not... and why comment on this page about it, stupid comment... this is Legend Layne speaking... listen to him,,, and talk about him.... not about Nirvana ect... I have hate to have the fight in whos better Kurt/Layne, i love them both the same.. and dont say i cant love both... i can. just the same as Sound Garden,Pearl Jam, Skin Yard, Gruntruck, Mother Love Bone... i like the whole Grunge era.

  • nirvana.... hahaha hahhahahahahahhahahahahaha i wanna see kurt sing "junkhead" YYYYEYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

layne staley forever. he fucking ripps kurt cobain in pices with his voice.

  • layne was a has been like dana plato and rob pilatus(milli vanilli) heheheheee!

  • WHO THE FUCK WOULD DISLIKE THIS LOL?

  • there is one dislike, come down, lol!

  • @metalsushidog Do you think they are going to check the comments of this video everyday to see if someone has mentioned them?

  • This is a great interview. Thanks so much for posting!!

  • lmao is he gay ..how dumb could interviewsers be if they knew who Layne Staley really was they would know that he had a girl friend and then she passed away ...

  • such a powerful voice

    rest in peace buddy :(

  • how much u want to bet that laynes other band regrets auditioning for a new lead singer which pissed him off and he ended up leaving them for jerrys band

  • Lane was the man>>> I am sure that means nothing to him. The real problem is all the kids that followed the grunge rock wave... the addiction did not make him creative!... just shortened his life. Miss that guy.... but another Jimmy, Janice, Bonam, etc.... (hopefully) long live rock and roll...

  • @larson1367 layne is worm food he was also a has been when he died, like rob pilatus(milli vanilli) heheheheheeee!

  • Im usually the last to know i was dying of aids......lmfao.

Layne was funny as hell in a lot of his interviews, such a amazing vocalist and person.

    R.I.P Layne Staley.

  • Layne was an unusual kind of guy in the music business, and that is probably why he didn't fit in. You rarely ever saw the front man of a big and influential rock band being as honest, humble and caring as Layne was. People (thanks to the press assholes he's talking about in this interview) only knew stuff about his addictions and his sex life and they judged him based on that.

  • That was the first time I ever saw Layne with a guitar lol think about it

  • at 4 minutes he looks like he's about to play teen spirit

  • RIP MIKE STARR :(

  • @METALFEST100 Yes. I still can't believe it..

  • It's crazy how Kurt and Layne had the softest voices but the loudest screams.

  • A true Alice in Chains fan would at least respect the "new" Alice in Chains.

  • Layne's voice was a little deeper when he was high, pretty evident in this interview. Dope voice.

  • How fucking tone deaf does somebody have to be to hold auditions for a singer to replace LAYNE STALEY for Christ;s sake.

  • Ok who the fuck said Nirvana and Alice in Chains was emo? Ok emo wasn't even around then during the whole 90s grunge thing. The emo shit didn't come in until a few years back. Listening to Layne's voice makes me so badly go back to this time and tell him don't shoot up. May Layne RIP.

  • ThatsWhatsUp!!!

  • from Staley's last interview: " I know I'm near death," he said. "I did crack and heroin for years. I never wanted to end my life this way. I know I have no chance. It's too late. I never wanted [the public's] thumbs' up about this f---ing drug use. Don't try to contact any AIC (Alice in Chains) members. They are not my friends."

  • @VendPrekmurec where can i find his last interview?

  • @chillenwitaguitar MTV i think... just copy paste my last post into the Google or Yahoo window and press enter..

  • he was a great perfomer and song writer, i loved the way he used to scream, one could experience his pain when he sang. i know what heroin does to a person (im a recovering addict, i used it for 3 yrs) and i can only imagine how he mustve felt in his last years. i hope hes in peace now cause his music helped put me in a better place everytime i was down. R.I.P layne you were a god sent angel

  • UFF..SOTTOTITOLI IN ITALIANOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE....

  • Its sad to think that this was the beginning of the end for him...after this point he just couldn't get well anymore. Damn it, there must have been something someone could have done, to force him to stay away from drugs, locked him up in a fucking monestry in Peru, I dunno, anything. Anything that would mean he wouldn't die alone and in so much pain. Anything that would mean we still had this beautiful man with us..:(

  • I love Layne's speaking voice and his little giggle. I love Layne. RIP angel...

  • So much Jerry trying to take all the credit for aic songs! Of course anyone who knows those songs like I do can just feel the Layne in them

  • Comment removed

  • Proof that Layne wrote at least something in the way of melodies and didn't just write lyrics to Jerry's melodies as people like to say. Sorry, Layne WAS more important to the band than just being a great voice and lyricist.

  • @runnersdialzero33

I just assumed Jerry wrote the music and he wrote his own vocal parts..

  • Comment removed

  • @xDarkWingedWolfx You don't rocognize addiction as a disease?

  • @Scotts87LX also Layne discovered that he had AIDS.

  • @RamonesSkater4life I've read a LOT about Layne and I know he was into needles for nearly two decades, but I've never heard he had AIDS.

  • @Scotts87LX Layne said so himself. I looked up quotes from him all over the internet.

  • @RamonesSkater4life No, he didn't have AIDS, it was just a false rumor, he said that he found some rumors about him, they said that he was dead and that he had lost fingers, and that he had AIDS. it was just a bunch of bullshit!

  • I love the fact that Layne was such an awesome person that even when drunk he was a sort of saint....and through his saintliness he met Jerry!

  • Apparently Layne trusted everyone in the band, but a few years later he refused to talk to them and said they were not his friends...i dont know if thats true, thats just what i heard from various stories online. God i wished he would of pulled through. Such an amazing man! RIP BUDDY

  • why doesn't everyone shut the fuck up about Nirvana...is this a nirvana video? no. It's a fucking Layne Staley interview. Ive been scrolling through and i'm finding it difficult to find any comments about Layne. Everyones just bitching about Kurt Cobain who cares? its the same with aic videos. Its like, if u want to share your stupid opinions about nirvana DO IT ON A NIRVANA VIDEO or keep ur shit to yourself.

  • R.I.P Layne Staley,

    & R.I.P Grunge Rock.

  • Nirvana were Emo? What kind of retard would think or say something like that?

My Chemical Romance is emo, Nirvana were clearly Grunge.

  • @Kozzy06 right on....how is EMO even a thing that people consider listening to???Its ridiculous how dumb all that stuff is.

  • fall into the abyss... why did you have to leave us layne? why? i am working on a new original about laynes death :(

  • @negerpungrally2 Your daddy talks like a faggot..

  • Great interview. Thanks

  • What album is he refering to in the interview?

  • @INTPWill Mad Season "Above"

  • Thank you so much for posting these interviews of Layne and his (very candid) personal thoughts while he was still among us.I consider it a gift. Revoluketion-Seattle Washington

  • I love you, Layne.

  • its cool to hear his voice his so honest...

  • Can't wait to hear him sing again, we will all see him soon

  • Can anyone tell me what he's saying when he anwers to question 29 (about the interviews, from 6:55 to 7:05 ) he says "the last journalist"..and after?

  • OMG!! he sounds exactly like kurt cobain! anyone else think that?

  • What promo CD is this from?

  • He sounds so...broken. Like a delicate piece of crystal. It's almost as if he's going to die any second. Poor Layne. I just wish he'd gotten help. He just seemed like he really needed love and drug treatment. True love that how's how much someone cares for him (not romantic.) Love that's real, not the crap the rest of AiC gave him; live when an album was recorded or love when they were touring, but love for him as a person and to care for his well being.

  • Hey EXP can you send me the other questions from the other band members?

  • @TheOmniologist I plan to upload them when I have time or you can buy the interview promo disc on Ebay, all the questions are written down in the book so it takes time for me to write them all out.

  • to me layne seemed a very giving person who had a good soul,he shouldave took care of himself.

  • hurts to hear him ....he sounds so desolate here. he was clearly troubled by how he was being portrayed by the media, and the image that was created for him that totally raked his privacy... "rest well brother"

  • @Minton78 i feel the same as you.miss you .... its so sad... .. Miss You Layne...

  • it amazing me how drugged out he was and yet how intelligent and how amazing his voice stayed

  • Holy shit, he DOES talk like Kurt Cobain. It's always the soft, quiet shy ones that come up with the most powerful songs.

  • @Gloriamagnificens It's also cause they are both Herion addicts whos brians are dieing

  • @CultofAmazingness hahaha yea seriously, everyone is like "oh man what soft angelic voices these two guys had" ...maybe its because their bodies were rotting away

  • @Gloriamagnificens are you fucking kidding me he does not sound like kurt cobain... come on man lol ye people sound shy when they get interviewed it happens... doesn't mean they talk the same lol

  • to me he sounds intelligent

  • GREAT THANKS!!!!

  • to the person who uploaded this: i think you did a good job. there's nothing else you could have done to improve it. :)

  • agreed

  • @SarahForgot I agree....THANX!

  • @JesseUrbin, I believe he sounds a bit like Cobain due to the Washington State accent... Similar pronunciations, Kurts voice was a bit deeper!

  • @ekimballz both from Seattle i think so they would have similair accents

  • he sounds so shakey...

  • He sound's allot like Kurt Cobain.

  • thank you so much for uploading this i am so glad i got to listen :) the man himself...

  • @strongerthanallgtr

    Nice place isn't it ?!

  • @h0ll0h fo sho :) haha

  • he's always a pretty softspoken dude

  • he always sounded like this. he's not 'sad'.

  • You kidding me? Have you ever listened to his lyrics?

  • i meant his tone of voice when he spoke. he always sounded like this even in his early days. i didnt mean the content of his lyrics.

  • wheres 1-23? :(

  • god i love this man and this band- rip layne dude lived threw more shit then we will ever know YET I FIGHT THIS BATTLE ALL ALONE

  • Layne's voice in this interview breaks my heart.. It sounds like he could burst into tears any second.

  • whys he so sad???

  • It says he did this in 96??

  • @BMWakias1 He died 6 years later.

  • If you've read the book, "Grunge is Dead", by Greg Prato, you probably noticed how everyone was saying how humble, kind and was so NOT the arrogant lead singer type. I think thats another reason in a thousand, why I have always loved Layne Staley: The definition of cool and talented, but polite and respectful. It's still a shame that he had a ravaging disease.

  • what disease? i thought he died from a overdose

  • He was refering to addiction since its considered a disease now. It would have been likely he contracted Hep-C as well but we will never know that for sure.

  • @Metallicafreakman he did... drug and alcoholism.. are ofter referred to as diseases... he did die from a speedball overdose... they didnt find him till 2 weeks later... he weighed 70 sumthin pounds when they found him

  • @Metallicafreakman drug addiction disease

  • @JaxBeach2NewportBch I just read that book and it was so intense and heartbreaking how his disease just consumed him. Almost literally....he seemed like a nice, genuine person. He will be missed forever. Hope anyone out there who is thinking about trying heroin or any opiates know the pain that will come. Please don't follow. RIP Layne

  • @JaxBeach2NewportBch not waht killed him thought but could have been why he speedball

  • looooolines it hollows meeee aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaai amm inside myself inside myself

  • I absolutely dig mad season way more than any other album this guys been on . my second fav album of the 90s behind blind melon soup

  • the last part of this vid really hurts me. how he talked about all the other interviewers :-( man people are asses.... hell i get put down all the time for loving layne. for some reason i feel like i know him if that makes any since?

  • Let your love for Layne live on. Those people that make fun of you our ignorant There is no way they can read a poem or Lyrics written by Layne and Not admire that talent. Oh and Not to mention That one of a kind VOICE.

  • @LisaMarie232 Amen! I just got done reading "Layne Staley: Get Born Again" and it was awesome to see all of his works from childhood and adolescence. Clearly, he was a multitalented artist.

  • @jmelkis Where did you get Get Born Again? The only places I've been finding it, it's like 300 dollars!

  • @nodnarbdoowron It's a shame that Layne gets put down the way he does. It's almost conspiratorial. In any case, he was really honest in his lyrics, his music, his poetry, his art....I feel like I know him myself. If you read the book "Layne Staley: Get Born Again," it'll be really obvious how much he was himself through his art. Even this book gets trashed....seems conspiratorial....wrote a review of it. write me if you want the link.

  • Awesome video. Hard to find rare interviews.

  • thanks for these - it might give fans a sense of completion, or closure. that is not to marginalize the latest CD, or any of Jerry's solo stuff. to me, i feel like its a way to finally 'close the book' so to speak.

  • Rest in Peace to Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain.

  • And what about the previous questions ?

Anyway, thank you very much for posting this, it's amazing to hear Layne's voice !

  • The previous questions were for the other band members. I was going to upload all of them but Youtube started flagging my videos for copyrighted material so I just stopped putting up videos because I did not want to lose my channel.

  • @ EXPcustom

    Ok I understand.

We're lucky that you began with uploading Staley's interview !

  • good quality, thank you!

  • @corricyerric

what are you...a scientologist? If you liked the band...right on...but if your over them...keep that trash talk to yourself bro cuz I dont wanna hear that shit. I always have and always will love Alice in Chains....I dont tern my back on what helped me thru hard times...so just move the fuck on dude...go listen to sum Brittney Spears or whatever your into now..maybe elton john

  • jajaj fuck you men...

  • @corricyerric

fuck you too you fucken poser !! go put on a tutu and dance to your gay ass "its raining men" music. leave the rock-n-roll to the rockers. do us all a favor and go comment on the teletubies or barney. let laynes memory rest in peace you jerk off

  • fuck you again men i love aic ill never stop listening...its just my point of view...sometimes its just to fuckin depressing if you dont like it i dont care...i listen to a lot of other really good music not that shit you just coment about...jaja poser..pff i bet you you fuckin eat dust against me on anything motherfucker if youre going to comment that kind of crap pff that only shows how fuckin loser you are...respect! its all i have to say for ignorant people like you pussy

  • @hollywoodsaint57

    elton john is good though

  • @nodnarbdoowron

elton is just a different genre thats all. this last guy was bashing layne so I just offered him some alternative music choices that fit his style

  • @hollywoodsaint57 anyone that bashes layne can burn in a flamin fuckin hell. and if i go there ill beat tha f outa um. but i really dont wanna go to hell tho. theres no way of getting ahold of anything that layne started doin by himself is there? i really wanna hear what he was working on as far as solo stuff goes

  • @nodnarbdoowron

check out "mad season" which was ok..they just kinda threw it together, that was actuall jamming. no rehearsing just vibin 2gether. "class of'99" was cool. this was like yesterday to me...they did a cover of pink floyds another brick in the wall for the film the faculty..alice is always gonna be my fav along with nirvana. Im a seattle grunge head till death

  • @hollywoodsaint57 I think you are a bit confused. They weren't just jamming per se. By the time they did the studio album, it was polished. Now, there is a recording on this same channel that is closer to jamming, but that shows their talent that the song became "River of Deceit," but I think that they were known as the Gacy Bunch then. In any case, they didn't jam live in their later shows, they played the songs they wrote together.

  • @jmelkis

When I say they "jammed" I meant they had no script, notes, or pre-meditated music. They just started playing off one another. So in essence, they "just jammed"....no need to get technical but thank you for your clairity. You love Alice so your a friend of mine.......peace!!!!!

  • exactly. Plus, remember, nowadays we are living in a time where the "inspiring rock and roll star" has faded away. Most punks today listen to Ludacris and Rick Ross and fall into the most egocentric vibes ever. Laynes lyrics have meant so much to me.

  • @hollywoodsaint57 I think this comment is funny especially since AIC all looked up to and respected Elton John.

  • what is the new record that he is referring to here?

  • most likely "Alice in Chains" (the self titled album aka tripod)

  • He fucking SOUNDS sick. Poor soul. Went well before his time. :/

  • its been so long... and i STILL love this man so freaking much... i am sorry but there aren't any layne staleys anymore... i hate you heroin...layne, you are still my heart..

  • @PennyLayne421 i so agree with you.........

  • There from the same region and were both more often than not smacked off there tits during interviews. RIP to both.

  • R.I.P Layne. :(

I lived in Kirkland for seven years (where he was born)

  • Layne doesnt sound like Cobain, Cobain sounds like Layne

  • thank you

  • @74wasagreat I think none of them sounds like each other ...

  • @74wasagreat no....he sounds like kurt.....kurts older....haha

  • @raider2080 born same year

  • @74wasagreat yes.....kurt in february and Layne in August....

  • @74wasagreat neither of them sound like each other fucktard

  • Layne's cute even with just audio(:

    RIP<3

  • talk*

  • gah his voice is so hott, he is so hott, i miss him :'(

  • it is raining there... you can here it

  • i love his voice, and i love him sooooooooo much!!!

  • you can hear the weakness in his voice. sad.

  • quit hating on kurt and layne...they were the biggest voice's in grunge and there legacy will live forever.

  • @METALLICAFAN103Z Cobain was NOT grunge at all...

  • @Gwaaaaaarrrrgghhh are u fuckin stupid yes he was

  • @IamTheRedneck No, he wasn't, you're clearly a brainwashed moron.

  • @Gwaaaaaarrrrgghhh what is he then the genre was defined by Cobain. Alice in Chains wasnt really grunge at all they just got the label because they were from seatlle

  • @IamTheRedneck Alice in Chains was grunge, Nirvana was emo.

  • @Gwaaaaaarrrrgghhh Oh hellllll no you did not just say that Nirvana was emo! Nirvana and Alice In Chains did not like to be considered "Grunge" but they wrote about real problems, things like Heroin addiction etc. EMO is just a bunch of whiney upper middle class kids that like to cut themselves because they are weak little bitches and life is too hard on Zolofot which is paid for by their parents' health insurance coverage.

  • @EXPcustom Kurt Cobain was a whiney little girl, sorry.
