I'm delighted to have discovered your singing and playing. You are the real deal, and you do justice to this poignant lament, a great song, a great rendition.
Nice rendition. I stumbled across this song while learning The Clash's "English Civil War" which uses the same melody (though it is based more on the American "Johnny Comes Marching Home" version. I like the original
so much that I may play a hybrid version, with the original lyrics over the newer chord progression.
@sk8terdude098: Speaking as a yank, I've never heard our version used in a pro-war context. Admittedly the lyrics may glorify war, but it is normally understood as a protest song.
Beautifully done. I'm amazed someone that so loves Ireland does not know her history. I feel for people that grew up their whole lives with the fighting in Ireland. I originally thought this was an Irish WWI song. Is it about the fighting in Ireland, or Irish going to fight in WWI?
@bordinbetti It is not about the fighting in Ireland. It refers to a war in the early 19th century, when Irish troops serving the British East India Company were sent to fight in Ceylon, then known as Sulloon.
nice one, I was hoping to find the dubliners performing it, but no luck. glad i still found an alternative to that mess the dropkick murphys recorded :)
So great performed, i love irish music :) You should be world famous, your singing takes me to a place of joy and happiness, music is amazing :) I will absolutely subscribe, best wishes from Denmark.
This is absolutely wonderful. My husband and I were looking for a nice version of this song, and yours is far and away our favourite. So many of them mess around with it, whereas you've just taken a powerful song and allowed it to speak for itself. Wonderful. Made me cry.
@raymondcrooke Appreciate it very much indeed.. You have a lovely voice, and put a lot of feeling behind it :-) Do you have mp3 files for sale somewhere?
Also, although this is a long shot, have you ever heard a version of this song that had a verse about Peg or Meg standing by Johnny after he came back from war?
@raymondcrooke Oh, my reply got lost, I think. I don't know if my comment sounded a little lukewarm - it wasn't meant to be. This is a stunning performance and had both me and my husband in tears. Really, really wonderful. Do you have mp3 files to buy somewhere?
Also, a long shot, but have you ever heard a verse to this song that refers to Peg (or Meg?) standing by Johnny?
@badbadbookworm No, I'm sorry. I don't have mp3 files. I only have CDs, and this song is not on them. And no, I don't recall hearing the verse you refer to. The only reference to Peg I know is the line "Ye're a helpless shell of a man on a peg", which is sometimes used instead of the "chickenless egg"!
the name sounded familiar and after hearing the hurroo, hurroo i realized. i used to listen to this song all the time when i was like 7 or 8, it's great to hear it again
Authenticity and true emotions, features that I find lacking in most of today's music, abound in your performance of this song. I absolutely love it, great voice and guitar skills, congratulations!
