They bought in a lot of good crops that Europeans can't seem to take their paws off; that was until they destroyed any means of agriculture that Haiti had. This video brings back so much memories. I was the student looking for the wounded in the hospital. I remember working with Esteban the cameraman taking so much risks for footage. Anyway, these "thousands of students" were whipped up artificially by the USA, and the students were largely mullato elites (90% of Haitians are illiterate, 96% never graduate from high school) whose families owned sweatshops and helped overthrow and massacre the first Lavalas government.

What? They're practically ALL mullatos. Furthermore, most footage comes from local media in Haiti, ALL of which is owned by Apaid and other anti-Aristide businessmen and propgandists.
Also, the rector's doctor has been interviewed, and there is plenty of evidence: his legs got a little bruised. He walked out of the doctors room, and was promptly stuffed into a (frequently photographed) wheelchair.

About the 80s - the population was starving, industry was rapidly disappearing as manufacturers moved away, and the tourist trade completely dried up. Do your research.

It's proven, even the insurgents themselves admitted it - the Americans cut off aid to Haiti, demonized Aristide in their press, and sent weapons and money directly to the rebel killers like Guy Phillipe, Ravix etc.... who were in the employ of the elites.

I'll answer you - YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. the so-called "Democratic opposition" boycotted the elections with US backing because there was no support for them. After the US's coup against Aristide, Lavalas boycotted the elections - the turnout was less than 4%!

Twobon, we have been going round in circles, but one new thing you mention is the rice prices.
Aristide DID NOT obey US orders to abolish tarrifs on rice imports (thus allowing the elites to charge whatever they liked for rice and drive out Haitian farmers). That's partly why the USA hated him - he REFUSED to sell out the poor and their food supply.
It was Preval who did that, and he was bullied into it by the USA. Also, we're not talking about Iraq, we're talking about Haiti.

I want the same answers b/c it seems like ppl are just venting about the past and not making any moves toward the future. In essence, the country is now driving itself into a grave instead of climbing out. There has to be a group of people who can send a message to the people, encouraging to appreciate Haiti enough to rebuild it.

Yes, the USA control Haiti through a dozen or so oligarchs, that much is true.
Aristide was made powerless by the deal he was blackmailed into accepting in the 90s, he had no power to help the poor, but he carried on trying (health, education, minimum wages etc) even so. If Aristide was such a US puppet how come they destablized and eventually

Nope cause the textil industry was strong cofee industry , plantains rice and meat was local and so much more now they eat frozen turkey and chinese rice zero production thanks to Aristide. Look, I'm not denying that some of his supporters got pretty nasty and violent, but the eye-witness reports indicate that he was not behind that, and that most of the violent Lavalas gangs started as self-defence gangs against the opposition.
Also, there were plenty of drug gangs that called themselves Lavalas groups (e.g The Cannibal Army), what evidence is there though that Aritide ever had connections with them?

A few things, twobon:
1. Despite US-funded opposition death squads murdering Lavalas supporters on a daily basis since 2002, Aristide never used violent tactics against his opponents. He condenmed those of his supporters who did so.
2. Despite massive attempts to dig up some dirt on Aristide, it was eventually accepted that he did not take a single cent out of Haiti when he left - he did not indulge in any kind of corruption.

And also, Jean-Dominique did reports on corruption in Lavalas, but he wasn't against Aristide. He did damning reports about the elites, the (American) corporations, the opposition...... Aristide had less reason or ability to kill JD than virtually anyone else in Haiti. Corporate media can say what they want.
Also, yes I did know the conditions of his return were harsh. In retrospect, he probably shouldn't have accepted them. It doesn't make him a monster, that he made a foolish decision.

After watching the opposition murder thousands of Lavalas supporters, it's not surprising that some Lavalassians decided it was time to get their own back, that doesn't mean it was encouraged by Aristide. Even if Aristide HAD tried to use violence (which he didn't) he wouldn't have been able to, he had no army and his police force was in the pockets of the elites.
The people want the return of Aristide. Thousands continue to march.

There are many gangs in Haiti. Some were drug gangs - many of these opportunistically called themselves Lavalas. Some were self-defence gangs formed independantly IN THE NAME of Lavalas by local bunches of Lavalassians to defend against the opposition death squads.
