I used to have a moped and my dad would always call it a hairdryer, but these actually are hairdryers, never understood why electric vehicles are described as green, or non polluting, I understand how they COULD be if the electricity was generated by renewable, or if the power was provided by on board photovoltaic cells, but the vast majority of electricity is still generated by burning fossil fuels.
@TuNuCedeMalis You're missing the point - I could connect a soundcard and a speaker to my ironing board and make it sound like a Desmosedici, but a living, (fire)breathing Ducati my ironing board ain't. Don't get me wrong, I like these electric bikes and the huge gobloads of torque they get from standstill and their natural sound is quite cool in it's own way, but don't pretend they will stir the soul the way a big V-twin at full chat will.
Can't wait for the day when we look back at this like we look back on footage of a Model T, then hop on our e-bikes, pull a fat wheelie, then take off to 200mph in 3 seconds.
Oh, and the hover boards from Back to the Future II, those need to become a reality too.
Anyone who thinks this is going to replace Harley's or Ducati's needs to get their head checked. Part of the enjoyment of riding a motorcycle is the engine noise/exhaust note, not to mention the vibration and pulses of the engine. Even if these bikes have a long battery life or high performance they still won't give the enjoyment of a petrol motorcycle and most people buy bikes for fun not because they have too.
@bulldog01209 true, to an extent. Aviation enthusiasts find classic aircraft like Tiger Moths stirring, or love the sound of a Spitfire or Mustang, but how many F22s can a Spitfire intercept, and would you like your eBay purchases to be delivered by Tiger Moth? Electric vehicles have different torque characteristics and power delivery which you presumably have never experienced, so how can you be sure you won't appreciate their particular strengths, the way you to a V-Twin's?
The electric motor can NOT be beaten, these bikes will eventually hold the highest average speed record, the bottle neck is the battery tech, however The motorczysz is perfectly good even at this stage...
Just think about one big negative with electric cars/bikes etc. Imagine the size of the service stations across the globe that would have to sustain enough spare batteries to exchange the thousands of cars/bikes that would need a change out battery during weekly transits!
Consider the labour required to assist with removing the interchangeable batteries. They would then need to be placed on a charging bank for the next vehicles once they reached their max charge rate. Something to think about!!
These are electric bikes, not the remote of a Nintendo Wii. You don't "exchange" their batteries when they run out, you just plug them to a wall outlet, like you would do with your laptop or cellphone.
Some countries in Europe already have charging hotspots spread around the country, where you can plug in your bike for free.
Hydrogen is a false fuel, because it takes more energy to produce it than the energy it produces.
@RuiBCJ Hhhmm, I'm considering all vehicles and when I decide to travel, I'm not going to sit at a charging station for 12hrs while my car recharges. Your a dick.
The insults start when intelligence for further debate is depleted.
Judging from your "12 hour" comment, I guess you still live in 1980.
Google for something called "A123" and get updated.
I own a SW Predator GTI Electric bike with A123 batteries. I can get 80% charge in 15 minutes (that's enough to take a leak and get back to your bike).
A full charge has never taken longer than 2h30m.
I drive it every day to work and back (85Km) and I still end up with 25% charge.
O.K. we have electric cars and bikes. You exchange your batteries at the old service station for a fee like gasoline etc. Imagine for a minute hwo many bloody batteries you would need and tyhe charging station for the batteries that are exchanged. i'm laughing as I write this, sorry! Battery power is a stop gap for the future, thats all. Look at hydrogen power on youtube, the germans are doing it a bit more reliable these days, ha, ha!
Idiots all of you..Bob Barber from Lancashire won and was deserved he is a top rider..why don't you knob heads do some research before you open you big daft gobs
@chaosfactor101 Yep remember by the 40's those bikes had 40 years of constant development. The leap in average and top speed even from last year is significant...Ten years, who knows? An electric bike with the record or near to it? I wouldn't bet against it.
lotus is developping a sound generating system for electric vehicles, you can basically record anything you like and, with the help of a TPS, put it on a speaker.
its not gonna replace gas racing ever.... its just another division.... just like a 250cc or sidecar division. Definitely cool though, you've got instant torque and a wider power band with instantaneous throttle response.
Sooner or later we really have to transition to electric bikes if we want to ride bikes at all. There's only a limited supply of oil waiting for us below our feet. So why not start that transition now?
Hmm, maybe because its not viable to refuel your electric scooter every 40 to 50 miles. if you ride harder then it would be less. I dont think this will be the alternative to fuel. If you look at car companies, there aren't many out there playing with complete electronic cars. They still require an internal combustion engine for high loads like hills and acceleration.
Check out the hydrogen powered alternative the Germans are playing with!
I assume that battery technology will progress faster and faster as more electric vehicles hit the road, and so the problems you take up won't be problems forever. Also, have you heard of a project called Better Place? It's a well-funded project that aims to build automated battery swapping stations, which means that you could get a fully charged battery in the same time that it takes to refuel an oil burning car.
What do you mean? Nissan has an electric car, the leaf. Chevy has an electric car (after the Volt, which is a hybrid.) Ford has the Think City, Tesla has the model S, then there's Miles, Fisker, Coda, BYD, and so on.
Every major automaker has one or more electric cars on the way either this year or within the next few. The reason? Government funding for fuel cell research has been cut. Just google "fuel cell funding cut".
@LunchAnderson it allready is happening! search the net and watch "who killed the electric car" on google vid, theres lots of home made electric cars here on utube
@LunchAnderson And our combustion engines are near to the limit of development. Now , to be super good they cannot be durable and use a lot of rare and expensive materials. What if we made the same stuff but electric? Cheaper , faster , cleaner and less parts! Our problem are batteries. For the moment that our batteries evolve we will finally have the capacity to overcome inner combustion engines.
@jorgecosta95 Yes, batteries need to become much better, but I'm confident that they will, eventually. There are already lots of batteries in development with much higher energy densities than today's Li-ion ones, although they all still seem to have various limitiations that the researchers need to work on.
