  • Progressive rock bands playing live at Stonehenge. Wow, how many different freedoms have been eroded and curtailed since these innocent days. Now just memories.

  • Dear Robert,Fantastic 2 c n hear ur music again.Colin Molloy exGothique n Thanks for those gigs Keep Rck'n

  • isnt he awful

  • omg awful version - go find the fabulous 45 ("b" side to when you wish upon a star) - it will all make sense :-)

  • The more I see this the more I like The Enid!!

  • Fantastic. Saw them live in 84 and even got to meet them backstage. They signed the first and second editions of their magazine, which were basically filled with a tirade of abuse against Barclay James Harvest as I remember. And Marillion. Still, at least The Enid never wore the crappy NHS glasses like BJH did!!

  • One of the most misunderstood bands of all time in my humble ophion totaly amazing, Will love Roberts,The Enids music forever. Joseph.

  • Ten months now!

Hey, does anyone remember the great support they had from Mournblade at Hammersmith many, many years ago? Oh happy days.

  • my mate jeff ward was mournblades drummer lives in ireland now

  • Drummer in Ireland, singer in New Zealand - man, they are almost touring as hard as they did in '84!

Good to see 3 of their tracks are now posted on 'yootoob' - and a reunion gig slated for August 2010 - break out the patchouli and grease-paint! (or in my case, Old Spice and Grecian 2000).

Thanks for the snippet Cornholio, hope Jeff's enjoying his new home.

    Need tp for my bunghole!

  • I did get the feeling that the Seed & The Sower issue caused him a lot of personal pain, as you may know he did have the backing of Lawrence Posts family to do the music for merry xmas mr lawrence

  • I think he did, i did get the chance to chat with him about it once, was at the Horn venue in St Albans, he told me he just wanted recognition for the music but like ya said, legally it did cost him

  • The guy paying the guitar is none other than Stephen Stewart. Yes BJH and EMI all had law suits against them and Robert won both, he has won others since against other studios, and yes they are still making music but now live in Northampton. The Enid has a new line-up these days and a website, just type the enid the stand in the search bar

  • Best wish`s Robert & co your old friends at "the woolpack", Hertford.

  • I played drums on this show. And throughout most of '84...I had a great time with Robert and Stephen and I remember this being a really good show - Hawkwind were supposed to headline but they wanted to go on at sundown (and again at sunup!) so we took their headline spot.

Robert let me down in the end, though...

  • Yeh, that's right Hawkwind said the would play at the stones at sunrise (i think they had a lie in). What was it with that 'Stand' newspaper - asking for money and stuff?

  • Robert Godfrey reckoned EMI and Barclay James Harvest owed him money for co writing "Mocking Bird", and the Stand was the Enid's newspaper implying that they were taking a "stand" against the mighty recording industry. At the time, I felt that EMI didn't give a toss what Robert thought and they just ignored him. I don't know what happened in the end - nothing, I imagine. The Enid were always skint and owed money for gear right left and centre.

  • It went to court and BJH were asked/ordered to pay RJG a sum of 1 penny ... if my sources and memory are correct. What the costs were I dont know and cannot remember who had to pay them.

  • Like Robert said at the time, he didnt care about money from BJH, he just wanted recognition for his music

  • Do you have anymore from 'Something Wicked'?

It's probably not an older fans favourite album.

    Thank You for uploading!

  • I played a gig with Troy Donnockley, And RJG in wales during a really bad storm in 1995..Troys a cool guy and a mate, but RJG is up his own A**e and some of his music is ripped off some old obscure composers gone by unnoticed..sometimes The enid sound amazing..but most of their material is the worst music ever wriiten and perfomed by any band in the history of time..a bit like Radiohead

  • Robert obviously irritates you. It makes me chuckle, I completely understand your feeling. I know you love him really^^

  • Yeh i have to agree with Douqienancy. I thought they were the most original band ever. But after a number of years listening to different musical tastes and styles i've realised they're not as original as i thought.

  • Robert is simply a complex person. Like many complex things, being prepared to work at the harder aspects makes the whole more worthwhile. I've read many bad things about Robert but, through the 30 plus years that I've known him, I've found him to be one of the kindest people alive. Sure, he can be a bit spikey and difficult to talk to on occasions, but who can't. I tend to think of myself as a 'nice guy' but I know that I can be a real a**e on occasions. .

  • As for the music, placed within historic context, it no more rips off than anything else. The overall design is progresive (as opposed to revolutionary) but the arrangements and details are WAYYYYYY beyond what most other bands could even dream of.

As for The Enid performing 'the worst music ever written' - please pont me to some of your stuff so that I may make a comparison. My guess is that the quality will fall far short of what RJG could pull from his bottom

  • I asume that typing WAYYYYY means your passionate about them...as far as OTHER bands are concerned ask yourself this, music is not about the content or arrangement, its about writing a tune thats original and appealing so here goes for the bands (musicians) i think are WAYYYYYYY (NOTICE:extra Y,)beyond the enid BEATLES,GENESIS,CAMEL,LED ZEPPELIN.MOZART BACH,ROBERT JOHNSTON,BELA FLECK,CARL JENKINS,come on I could go on and on....

  • OK, if we're going to start off with sarcasm about semantics, I'll respond by telling you that you suggested that I ask myself a statement (and mention that it should have been "you're" not "your"). WHAT is 'writing a tune thats original and appealing'? Music in general or just entertainment? Of those you mention, I find nothing there especially original (except maybe Robert Johnston). The Beatles were good collators (with a very clever arranger); (continued in next comment)

  • Genesis were like MANY other bands of the time; same for Camel (Pete Bardens, I assume, not Peter Frampton); Led Zeppelin were just a loud blues/folk band who played some great stuff but also a lot of crap; Mozart and Bach were beyond brilliant but used many folk tunes so were NOT original. Can't comment on Bela Fleck; and I refuse to comment on Carl Jenkins (mainly because of indecision on my part). Now, you ask yourself this; if it's not about 'the content', what is left?

  • Brilliant stuff. I saw The Enid in Preston, and Blackburn (I think) two or three times in the 80's. They were a fantastic band, RJG a musical genius.

    Oh! You naughty, naughty boy!

  • Will put some more songs from this concert up when I'm a bit less busy

  • please dont!!!

  • i spoke to robert john godfrey last thursday!

    x

  • Wonerful Memories of that concert at Claret Hall real ale too These times you never forget- Jolly Rotten

  • I remember it well. It was freezing even with 'The Stand' newsletters wrapped around my legs.

  • That's the RMI one, BTW!

  • Sad but true - I spoke to RJG in about 1987 about which keyboard he had used for a certain part at a gig at the Vic Hall, Hanley - and here it is!!!

    Yup, sad.

    Ian, Rugeley

  • i remeber seeing the enid at the dominion in london years back with a load o f mates,we all fell asleep through the gig. best concert i ever witnessed
