Yeah that construction would not cost anywhere that much as having it pre-built, installed. . . With the materials of building (insulated, professionally wired and dry walled) the cost would be in the park of 5k I'm thinking. Good idea is a real small corner kitchen area that's just enough for little tasks and adding a wood stove. I did notice some skimpiness on details like stairs etc. in this model, those need some reinforcing. That would be an awesome retreat though!
@polarbeach In my area, if it is a "portable" shed, you are allowed to have one put on your property(no permitting required). If you wanted to build the same thing and make it with a foundation(151sq. ft or larger) then you need a permit. Always check your local building codes.
Lowes has a really decent 2 story shed which is very similar, but more affordable. Very good idea for cheap, decent housing. I think the one they had was around $8,000.....and I like it's layout more.
Nice idea! What type of shed is this? I tried looking on homedepot website here in Michigan but was unable to find this style. My husband and I are getting ready to purchase land to vacation on and this would be great for us.
@LadyCAB This model is called the "New Day". The sku number is 724-196. The brochure says call 1-800-218-4100. This particular stlye of shed comes in sizes from 16x16 to 18x20. I hope that helps. If you have more questions, feel free to ask. Thanks for watching.
if I was building a house, I would use 2x6 on the walls, not 2x4s so I could add more insulation. In a cold location for winter use, 2x4s will just not be enough.
@luvintherawlife The add said it includes set up and delivery. I don't have a contact information, but you can call your local Home Depot for details.
Growing up my folk's had a summer bungalow with the same layout only slightly bigger, maybe 20x25. It served its purpose well and still stands to this day. It is now incorporated into a larger all season home. The original structure is about one hundred years old.
@Richardofdanbury The people of yesteryear were able to make do with a lot smaller homes. I started wiring homes in the 1980's and they were @ 1100sq ft. By the year 2000 the average home sizes had grown to @3000 + sq ft. We may see people getting back to the way it used to be. Thanks for your input.
yea home depot is a good place shop - my g/f and i are looking into the same building to put on some land but the back door is in the middle of the first floor back wall / with the door under the stairs you loose space that we plan to turn into the kitchen area / and if you buy it with no windows and add them yourself you can save on going to salvage yards and buying cheep good windows for half price
@TheHossUSMC I think Home Depot put in extra to cover their ass and accommodate the people who will be using it for storing mega sh#t upstairs. Sometimes, overkill can be a good thing. I agree that less building materials could be used.
Where would you put the bathroom in a structure like that? Upstairs or downstairs? Also would you do a composting toliet in something like that or a septic? Just curious. This seems like a great affordable solution. thanks for sharing.
@Ejahi My wife suggested putting a half bath under the stairs and a full bath upstairs with the 2 bedrooms. In our area we would do a septic system. A composting toilet sounds like a great idea too. Thanks for commenting.
Great vid . My wife and I saw one down here , pretty cool little buildings . Just about the size of our first apartment . lol . Thanks for the update .
Man you must have been following me around today. I went to shreveport to set up my table at the gunshow then went to lowes and homedepot to look at these very buildings. My wife and I bought the lot across the street from our house and we are thinking of putting one of these on it and selling our big house. Reduce, simplify, use less electricity, take up less space, require less upkeep. .
@bctruck Sounds like you and me are like minded. I spotted these buildings in north Ga. I think I would have enjoyed the gun show and seeing your table.
@Cronie318 I've seen better built homes destroyed by hurricanes. I'm not exactly sure when the END will be, but I am not going into debt to get a cabin in the woods. There was a disclaimer on the shed that explicitly said "Zombie resistant", Which impies that zombies will be able to get in eventually.
I think the price is related to the area you live and the shed being "cute". In my area it would be more reasonable to find a take away building, or put up a garage or pole shed. I'd prefer my building NOT to look so cute and have more space.
@cbr6864 Wouldn't it be nice if things these days were priced based on their material costs only? Ah...yes.. However the retailer for this spent a lot more than the material cost to sell this at 12k. There is the time spent building it, and the time and money spent shipping it. 80 percent of that 12k selling price is what they spent to make this structure.
Great Idea..

I guess you just put it on the property and don't worry about building codes. We aren't allowed to put those here without one

A point of thought, in many places the restrictions on building a house is way, way more expensive and restrictive than putting on a storage building.
One could claim this is a storage blding and get by nicely as a part time or emergency type place.
