One reason the SR 71 Blackbirds were never weaponized was the fact that if they attempted to fire machine gun rounds at top speed, they could actually overtake the bullets. And at the time there were no ground to air missles that could catch them. That's why the soviets were never sucessful in taking one down. Unlike the U2.
