The best thing to do is : go to a Fine Arts School and learn it yourself. You may read all the books you want, it's the PRACTICE that makes the Master. You have to do it again and again and again .... for many years ... to become a good restorer. And use the best materials. Secondly : that's what is wrong in the whole restoration business : restorers are competing with each other and don't transfer their knowledge to the next generation. Lot of knowledge is therefore lost.
fine arts school is school. not something that is trial and error, and a REAL learning process. I already went to college so thanks for the worthless tidbit on the rules and laws of woodworking and finishing.
And you are wrong.
I have REFINISHED two drum sets.
And BOTH were COMPLETELY different and the processes were almost the exact opposite, but yet, the end results were breath taking.
Took 6 months, made mistakes, started over, learned, and, no fine arts school.
The powder is Trippel or Bimsmehl, the oil is Polieröl from the firm Zweihorn. Excuse me, but I don´t want to give more information. I think that it gives a lot of literature about the politur. Everyone who wants to learn it, has to try it , again and again. I take this video on Youtube to show interestet costumers , what it is, how many works it takes and that they understand, that it is not cheap. They also can see that it is the loveliest surface for old furnitures.
Sehr schönes Video!!!
