  • Was that English? Great voice though!

  • Corelli had POWER and good looks too!

  • Its all good ! After all, Captain Peacock on "Are You Being Served" pointed out that the Japanese can't wrap their tongues around their "r's" -- arse ! Someone once pointed out that Corelli always had trouble with the letter "S". I lke it that way. And the Spanish always lisp because one of their kings lisped. So to please the king and make him feel "normal" they to this day lisp! Eisenhower and George Bush could not say nuclear, but Nuculear! Fuggetaboutit!!

  • @jackel80

hmm, ai si yu hav ay puzlinglee stronge dislaiking four pour speling, soe purhaps ai shood tourtur yu ferthur az ai haev nuthing betur tu du aet thuh moemeant hehehe. enywei...

Corelli's voice is powerful and masculine as always. Whether tenor, baritone or bass, a male opera singer should always possess a rich, masculine sound and a fiery temperament. Classical music just doesn't work with anything less.

  • Silly comparison...Lanza is a light "pop-artist".

Franco Corelli is an eternal "Opera-Great!"

  • @maxhansendk you are right ,that is what Corelli was a Opera Great! I love Thee is not Oprea. When it came to singing these type of songs in English,Mario Lanza' s voice will never be topped. In my opinion Corelli was thr Greatest Opera Tenor of them all.Although Lanza was not a true Opera singer,he could sing it with the best of them!

  • @tenorvoice50 i agree with all your comments. We could not stop laughing at this version unfortunately, as it really does sound like he's singing "thou art my arse supreme".

  • This lovely song was sung at my late wife's and my wedding in 1990. Franco was unfortunately retired so he couldn't come. We had a lovely young Swedish soprano who sang it in the original Norweigan

My wife is the Ingela of Ingela's singing Clumber Spaniels, which you can see on YouTube

  • Grieg and the English language raped into pieces.

  • @Melomondo yep. He had a fantastic, effectful voice which he unfortunately couldn't modulate in such a way as to make this piece justice. And for all who like to argument; no I don't sing like Corelli - I don't think I could, and I don't pretend to. That does not nullify critique. (It's a ridiculous argument, but better fend it off than not to).

He gave it his all, in his way, which equates to tearing the music and the composer a new one...

  • his English is terrible. but I could care less, his voice is the shit and that's what matters

  • Here we go into the eternal argument. Who is better Corelli or Lanza? Of course Corelli was better, however Lanza made a better recording of this song than Corelli.

  • EXTREMELY disrespectful to the great norweigan composer Edward Grieg.

  • i love corelliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii :)

  • I am saying this probably at the risk of being killed, but this man is, if I may opine, an utter insult to opera.

Again, for those who favour him, I mean no harm, I merely state my opinion.

  • Well, I was born and raised in Italy but I speak perfect English and I have to say: Corelli pulled it off with the accent. Deeply.

Why did I take the time to leave the comment?

Because I think about all those amazing English speaking singers who have almost-perfect Italian diction...

  • Mario Lanza, better perform than corelli? wtf? Mario Lanza was an actor, and for that he was able to sing in english, but never compare him to corelli, for the love of God.

  • Ahhh, pleeezzz, no comparison between the two. corelli is KING, Mario is a little prince. But I still love the little prince.

  • Beathame88. Nevertheless, Lanza was a far superior singer in English language songs, including this one. Although I'm not a fan of his operatic arias.

  • @Beathame88 Absolutely disagree. He was an actor, but he had also a great voice. In words of Placido Domingo: "If he had made opera instead of cinema he would have become another Caruso". I agree this song is far more beautiful to my ears (and many I know) sung by Mario Lanza.

  • @Beathame88 Lol, I think you shouldnt compare Corelli to Lanza. For the love of god.

  • I do not tolorate racism myself. And as for "only Italians should sing opera", that is utter rubbish. Thought at one time, proved years after to be an art for anyone with a passion to sing.

  • Below, someone has writter actual words in English, and its marvelous. But maestro Corelli sings twice the same, and totally incorrect. He sings: "For to whatever than the earthly creature..." This is humor for those who speak English. One word he didn't sing correctly. What a shame for such a great singer.

  • Are you sure it is English? :-)

  • It doesn´t matter....he was singing for japanese people...... Bravissimo Corelli

  • yes....that's english

  • It's recognizable as such, but quite broken it is true.

  • I applaud Corelli's attempt at English, and a rare composer for him.

  • This great artist was singing outside his normal musical genre. Seldom does anyone sound really authentic in another language,,,unless it is Nicolai Gedda. It is easy to criticise,,especially when you cannot do it yourself !

  • Much as I admire Maestro Corelli's work I think here his approach is too histrionic. The song's real beauty is found in its' quietness and sincerity. This is far too operatic. Thus is it said, that any idiot can sing opera-- but it takes an artist to sing lieder.

  • Thou art my thoughts my present and my future

Thou art my hearts supreme its only joy.

I love thee more than any earthly creature

I love thee dear, I love thee dear, I love thee now

and for eternity, I love thee now and for eternity.

One thought of thee all other thought drives from me,

Pledged to thy good alone this heart shall be.

For to what ever fate Gods will may doom me,

I love thee dear, I love thee dear, I love thee now

and for eternity. I love thee now and for eternity.

  • I think he sounds good, but it is funny that English speakers are often criticized for their poor diction when singing opera, but when the tables are turned, many times, these singers are worse in English.

  • No one could top Mario Lanza ,singing in both languages period.

  • @tenorvoice50 HA!ha! ha! ha! ha!

Your comment made my day - I am still laughing writing this!

  • @maxhansendk I don't known what i said that was so funny. please refresh my memory. Then I can replie.

  • Wow, this is in English??? He probably should have got a good Italian translation. Its complete mush.... Glorious as that mush is!!

  • "I love thee". Surely you got that. I did after 2 or 3 listens. The rest of it, as you say, was glorious mush.
