  • Played at our anniversary 41 years ago today by dear friends. They had permission from Peter, Paul and Mary to do so, because it was before the release of the song. They had heard at a concert in Perth one same tour and asked. Of course, the tape broke down at our wedding!

  • Knock it off with the "stoned" crap and just let everyone enjoy good music. How would you know that anyway---you can't prove it. Were you there? I'm sure you were not. Were you with him before he went on stage? Huh?OK What? Were you his best friend or spouse? Then shut up about it!

  • A more poignant song, I've not heard. As much as it is about love...it also comforts for those that have known love...true love do not escape from also feeling it's slings and arrows. Many thanks for posting.

  • @joelt6502 Great comment.

  • If I ever do get married, this song will be played.

  • I walk down the aisle on my wedding day to this song..... special memories

  • i'm having this sung by a live vocalist at my wedding this Sept.

  • he is so stoned.

  • @galactosis

    maybe, but it's a damn good song and performance

  • I wept. So beautiful.

  • This is the best version of this song I have seen. What an artist and what music.

  • Wow !!!! Thank You for the memories

  • Wow !!!! Thank You for the memories

  • Wow !!! Thank You for the memories

  • I love this song...I always have...I am 32 and fell in love with this song when I was about 12... Even as a 12 year old Peter, Paul and Mary, Jim Croce and others like them were my favorites. Yes, I was different...but if the music didn't mean something, if the music didn't touch a part of me, I couldn't listen to it. I'm still that way now. In a week I am getting married and this song is definitely going to be played. :)

  • this was to be my wedding music..but it was not to be..he died in 2004..broken heart forever.

  • at 1.42 , was that guy yawning in the background !!!! how dare he

  • Paul is awesome.

  • I was getting ready to watch my Chinese-pirated PP&M Christmas dvd (never available in the US) filmed many years ago for PBS fund raising and decided to check out some of their U Tube video. I saw them in concert a couple times and around '77 with seats in the orchestra pit (can't get any better than that). I shot rolls of film and Paul noticed and I got great shots of him hamming it up for my camera. This is the best song I have ever heard for the use/sound of a 12-string guitar.

  • @ haltinedan,

    I like your term, "soft music".

    I grew up on rock and roll like anyone else but it is nice to listen to calm and peaceful music too.

    Last night I was watching some old Red Skelton TV shows from the early 1960s and was reflecting on how much music, art, and literature has changed since then.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

  • It's weird that this song became so popular right around the time that divorce became a big fad.

  • Wow... What a beautiful song!!! The melody is absolutely unforgettable!!!!

  • @DAVEJJR Totally agree. I'm a heathen atheist but God Almighty (whom I don't believe in) is this ever a wonderful sentiment and beautiful song. So much Christian music comes from a place of joy and love. Does Yusef Islam still perform the Christian hymn 'Morning Has Broken?'

  • people did not look too thrilled.

  • @EddyGil They weren't ready for it yet. It was groundbreaking stuff.

  • Beautiful 12 string.

  • Gotta love that 12 string.

  • I used to sing this song quite a few years ago. The music and the lyrics cut through the stuff of life at this moment as much as it did then. Blessings,rev.jon

  • What year was this recorded?

  • @ cariadw7,

    1970.

  • @lujous, I totally agree with you. I'm a musician and its so frustrating to see the type of music that sells these days. It requires no talent whatsoever and thats just not fair to those of who actually have something meaningful to bring to the table.

  • goregeous

  • This is a rich and emotive performance. There is something about a plucked, chiming guitar and a tender voice that touches the heart. Paul Stookey is one of the best singer/guitarists out there.

  • Listening to this song is like renewing my wedding vows...Thank you for posting!

  • I've watched this so many times and every time I get the same amazing feeling and chills. Thank you for this song Paul and thank you for posting it. God bless.

  • awesome! I still have a vinyl live album from about this same time that has a version very similar to this on it.

  • Wow he looks like Fidel Castro

  • My favorite version!

  • I'm sitting here listening to this song and getting a little misty. Not because it reminds me of anyone or it holds any special meaning.

    I listen in wonderment, remembering a time when music moved me. When musicians actually had writing skills and could actually sing.

    Thanks for posting the video

  • lujous,

    My pleasure!

    Yes, the quality of music certainly has changed since then hasn't it?

  • @ lujous ,

    I am with you in spirit. My love to you.

  • @lujous I sooooo agree. There was a certain 'feeling' ... I still feel it.

  • @lujous ugh sooo true i feel no attatchments to any new artists but when i think back to the olden days or listen to any musicians in the past it was real ya know .. it was soul. i guess it hard to explain but i agree witcha !

  • @lujous Well, if you wrote a song like this for a woman under 50 years old today, she'd laugh and make fun of you. Younger women want music like Sir Mix A Lot to get them in the mood. Just being real.

  • @mdonnelly1971

    My point exactly. people under 40 have no idea what real music is. And it will never change as long as marketing is more important than talent.

  • I love this song. Thank you so much for this beautiful video, it brightened my day.

  • You are welcome. I am glad people are enjoying their music.

  • Oh what a rare and beautiful thing!

  • Oh ...absolutely one of the best songs!

  • Wasn't this the song played in The Wonder Years episode when Kevin's sister Karen has her hippie wedding?

  • I couldn't say. I have never watched The Wonder Years.

    I agree ! One of the best songs ever !

    I did not see this video until a couple of weeks ago myself. I thought I had them all !

    ~~~ Chuck
  • As I've said before, I have no idea where you get these videos, because they are priceless. In this clip Paul reminds me of what Christ may have looked like when he walked the earth - minus the shiny forehead. I've never seen PS with a beard. Great vid, Dude.
  • Glad you liked it!
    Thanks for commenting!
    ~~~ Chuck S
