@johrons They are there. The '77-'78 had larger birds that were a seperate piece fom the lens. '79 had them molded into the lens and then chrome plated. The chrome got crappy looking, so I sanded the rest of it off. So, now the birds are hiding.
The emissions pretty much strangled the big-blocks in the 70's. The 460 dropped as low as 195 or so in the mid '70s. They can be brought back to life with a few easy tricks and still be very reliable and run on 87 octane. Mine is estimated to be 300hp @ 4100rpm & 425lb.ft. @ 2200rpm.
I had a 1977 T-Bird. Yes, it did tend to rust heavily , especially the insides of the bumpers where you couldn't really do anything about it. Near as I can tell, it didn't have any sort of galvanizing or factory rust protection. My next car was an '86 Cougar, and it had galvanized sheet metal and came with undercoating included, so the rust appeared much later and didn't spread as fast.
Most fords from that era are notorious for rusting out. My grand father had a 79 marquis brand new and 3 years later it had so much bondo it wasnt funny. Is that car on a frame or Unibody?
thats reallt not true i have a 79 t bird that was made in iowa and drivin in the winters for the last 30 years and the only rust on it is a small patch behind both rear tires
do you live in arizona? hope the cardinals win. Any ways does any one know where I can find an 80-82 tbird. I asume ford didnt produce many because there even more rare than the 77-79's
I'm not from Arizona, I'm from Pennsylvania. The 77-79 'birds are rare because they rusted so bad. Ford made about 950,000 of them in 3 years, but most are dead. As for the 80-82, they weren't very popular, and you almost never see them. I would check craigslist.
Actually, the last year the 460 was an option was '76. That was the bigger 'Bird and there was much more room. The '77-'79's were considered a midsize and the biggest available engine was the 400 in '77 and '78, and the 351 in '79.
Nice car and sweet sound out of that 460. I also have a Thunderbird but a `78 and I was thinking of an engine swap to a 460. What exactly did you have to do to make it fit?
I usually get about 6-8mpg, because I have a lead foot. The best it has ever gotten was about 13mpg on a trip. It would probably do better on fuel if it were a little quieter, because the exhaust noise induces my foot to press harder on the pedal..haha.
looks like a fairmont rear LOL
nice sound

How much power does that 460 put out? I know that GM's 454's always had close to 300hp, I'm going to assume the 460 has about 300 too.

They are body-on-frame '77-'79, and unibody from 1980 and up.

shouldn't have to do much... they came as an option so they fit just fine.

The 460 was the standard and only motor in the '74-76 Tbird. Last year for the smaller standard 429 was '73.

Do you have headers on the 460? I have a '79 w/ a 400M (still stock) with headers - they were a real b*^%h to fit in. Sweet sounding ride!
greenmetal1 3 years ago
No headers..I can't afford them right now. It just has stock cast iron manifolds.
