Some were taken aback by the shift in style from BBD to RN, but what a record. Saw Bill in LA back in '81 at the Roxy when he was touring to get an American deal (eventually signed on Epic) and they played a KILLER version of this one. Great track with an absolutely brilliant middle-8...
Bill is going to feature in TV show Legends, with a full band playing Be Bop Deluxe material!! Metropolis studios, London march 26th 2011. Don't miss this one, meet Bill and be a named sponsor on the DVD to be released later!! Not many tickets left - you have been warned! Please alert all Bill Nelson fans.
It was just slightly out of its time - in 1980 or 81 it would have been top ten, but 1979? It's not immediate enough to have attracted much airplay then, whereas playlists in the early 80s suddenly became a bit more experimental after the demise of disco. (And I'm a disco fan, but this is pretty good anyways).
urgh, this was the first album I was ever old enough to buy. Not too many better things to do than learning the lyrics off by heart at 7! Thanks Bill! still love it
I bought the album when it first came out,I couldn't stop playing it. Anyway, time and years pass by and we move from one musical influence to another then the internet age is upon us and Youtube appears and our sense's are re-awoken to this stunningly beautiful and masterful piece of work (plus many others of course). Many thanks for posting and re-igniting an old fire ;-)
As one who lived thru this fantastic era, i can say i enjoyed all of Bill Nelson's brilliant compostions and for anyone to suggest he is deriviative is plain ignorant.
XTC and Wire whilst brilliant emerged in the punk era whereas Bill was a major star well before this time.
According to one interview, Bill said Harvest/EMI hated the Sound on Sound album and had called his manager wanting to know why was he making this ugly music.
nice one there goldenhinde. good tune this , wasnt bill from wakefield west yorkshire . we seem,d to have more music to choose from back then a bit spoilt im glad to say . good to here again thanks .
I can't believe that no one has posted "out of touch" on here, can't find it anywhere. Someone please post "out of touch", if you have a copy of The Old Grey Whistle Test version with the black & white cartoon that would be a big bonus.
Ya know... this guy should have monuments built to him for his contributions to music and art, but for the most part, the majority of upright-walking knuckle-dragging media-lobotomized masses are so out the f*cking evolutionary loop they wouldn't see it coming if it hit them in the face.
Great music and lyrics, still remembered it all these years later to think of searching for it. Thanks for posting it. I love the second 'raiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnn'.
Wonderful Song and the b-sides were great too. "Acquitted by Mirrors" is my favourite Bill song ever, why was it not on the re-master of the album from a couple of years back?
Record Companies have no clue, and they wonder why they are becoming extinct!
Yes, this was great stuff. I loved playing Bill Nelson's Red Noise and his work with Be Bop Deluxe when I was a DJ on WFUV in New York back around that same time... 1979 to 1980. Gary Numan and the Thompson Twins also captured some of the fun music of this time, but I'm still partial to Bill Nelson's work.
