Sorry but this was a class assignment too (so time was of the essence) and I couldn't:

a) Wait for the weather

b) If the weather was perfect I couldn't ask my actors to give up an entire day with out any warning

c) Even if it was over cast it would not look like night, it would just look a little darker which I could have done in post production if I wanted too, but I decided against it because it didn't look like night still.

I cut out a hole in the center of a ply-wood board, put the board on two saw horses, covered it with dirt and grass, then filmed it! ... Hope that helps.
