I was typing a report on microsoft word and listeniing to music, heron blue goes off so I click something random, which happened to be this. It took me 6 mins and 24 seconds longer than it should have to finish my report. Beautiful, beautiful music.
Even if you're not from Ohio (I'm not, but I spent a good deal of time in the Pittsburgh area, which is close enough for most purposes), this era of Mark Kozelek's work is incredibly powerful. Not that the rest isn't.
I grew up in Ohio. I always used to say I hate Ohio. I always wanted to get out. I went all over the United States, and no matter where I ended up I always felt a longing to go back to Ohio. I miss it so much. I thought moving to Austin, Texas would be different. Grass is always greener on the other side I guess and when you get on the other side, the side you were on was better all along.
Just shows you can write about a whole piece of turf, and you get half a million hits. And a very average song. I followed this fella since 1993. Marvellous and gorgeous. But to get into perspective, this song is nothing like the work in 1993.
Im from Tennessee, but I moved to Ohio. Its not bad, by any means, specially North Canton and the more rural areas of Ohio are gorgeous, but there is no place like the South.
I've made a lot of friends from all over the country and world. And almost everyone's initial thought about Ohio is that it's all farm land and nothingness. It generally changes once they come here and find out it's not. It really is difficult to get Ohio out of your mind once you're away. Maybe we Ohioans truly do learn to appreciate the little things life offers. It really is difficult to fully explain.
I've lived in Ohio my whole life. Excepting the 12 weeks I spent in Germany, that is. When I hear this song, I definitely feel like this song is a simple plea that Ohio will get me where I need to go. It's a cultural hellhole here in Northwest Ohio, and it has to be the people who make it. This place sucks, and I'm tired of it, but it's home, it will always be home, I will probably always love it, and it's where I'm at right now. I'm okay with that. For now.
You too huh? I feel ya on living where we do, it's pretty much a cultural void. I have to say though, either growing up here has made me insane or else I might be on to something, but it makes you appreciate a sparer, quieter existence.
I grew up in NW Ohio, just south of Toledo, then moved to Columbus when I was 18. I've lived in Southern California, Oklahoma, Huston, and now live in Seattle and I can say with all sincerity that the people don't get any better. I'm planning on moving back, at least to the lower great lakes cities if not Ohio.
I love this song and band. It's very unique. This song is so great, and everyone will always love where they have grown up, because childhood and adolescence is the best time of everyone's lives. You're carefree, and everything is an adventure. I'll miss this feeling and my hometown if I ever move out.
I actually didn't know about this band until after Gears of War 3. I thought it was just going to be another band that only has one good song. BOY was i wrong. All of their song are great, and they make you sit back and think for a while. I sit on my roof in the country and lay back and look up at the star while i play their songs.
This song overwhelms me with melancholy feelings. I love Kozelek. If you like this song, you should check out ''Fragile Bones(Feels Like Home)'' by Ali Murray...
i heard sun kill moon from gears of war theme song and it sounds so good.. so good that i got all the albums now.. thanks gears of war and youtube! XD
Ohio is a great place to grow up, if you're young it won't take you long to realize it. once you leave to travel, what have you, you'll understand it's the people that make the place almost always.. ;) people seem to find themselves wanting to come back later in life.
@ArrogantSpoon I just moved to Brooklyn last month, mostly because so many of our Ohio friends are there now. People I haven't seen in years--since childhood even, now in a different place, have only found that our depth of love has only widened about having grown up in Ohio. It is one of the few places that regardless of where your happiness ends up, its roots will always keep your heart true and open.
@ArrogantSpoon, yup. Underrated state. I know this because I've lived here for a long time.
Sounds like a farm town, generic state, to most people. And indeed, it does have plenty of farmland, just like any state. But seriously, Columbus is an AMAZING place to live. It's also a very safe place as there are NO natural disasters, no tornados, earthquakes, floods, anything really. Not the kind of spice that I miss in life.
@apocalypse123 Depends on what parts you live in. Down here in south ohio, it's beautiful, gives me a nostalgic effect, I just went to my grandmother's funeral today and I helped carry her casket, she chose to be buried in the cemetery next to where I used to live as a kid. When I die, I wanna re-live my young years back in Southern Ohio, where no one actually has hick accents and we play acoustics in the living room. North ohio sucks ass though, no offense.
@WolfOfMibu293 Yea. Down here we just have serial killers. Though I'm not trying to sound funny when I say that. We don't have gang members as much as we have serial killers in general. lol
I knew about the Red House Painters, who I love, and heard his voice on the pilot of Sons of Anarchy, and I thought, "I know this voice! " I looked it up and sure enough, it was Sun Kil Moon. I love this just as much, maybe more.
How lucky can one music lover be! I just discovered Red House Painters and that has brought me to his other act, this little gem. like winning the lotto with the bonus ball.
@jl416300 Well try to use comment replies for one. But I don't know. I just figured the song was more based around the freespace in ohio, most freespace in ohio is southern ohio. I really don't know, this song just reminds me of my old home.

This song is about a reflective honesty triggered by NE Ohio landscape; not the state itself. While we all experience a stream of consciousness brought upon by our memorable surroundings, only Kozelek can forge these thoughts into such a sublime and untouchable musical confession.
This song is about a reflective honesty triggered by NE Ohio landscape; not the state itself. While we all experience a stream of consciousness brought upon by our memorable surroundings, only Kozelek can forge these thoughts into such a sublime and untouchable musical confession.
The first song I heard by them was Heron Blue played on this Canadian radio station that we get in Michigan, so I looked up other songs by them and I fell in love. :)
@billyboy434 ... sometimes. A lot of it is the farms. They of course spread their manure but then there's the lucky few who get to experience what the inside of a chicken coup smells like when they have em right next to the road with their vent fans blowing right at you. Also I live in a town with an oil processing company and if they spill, it smells like HARSH dirt. It's pretty rough. But it's rare.
@spicee3905 Ohio doesn't suck if you have a family...if you are looking to go out and get drunk everynight and go clubbing, go to Vegas....if you are looking for affordable housing, a shitload of land in comparison to the rest of the country, 4 seasons, you're in the right place. I've lived all over the US and World....every place has its up and downs. When you're young and you haven't lived anywhere else, Ohio sucks cause you have no experience elsewhere
Been listening to this album since it came out, minus the time between when I first heard one of the songs on a college radio station and when I finally heard it played and credited again after six months of religious listening. Defined my college years. Thanks for the music!
Yep, I'm back here again, meditating on this on this incredible song

@spicee3905 Doesn't suck too much down here, it's peaceful, but I guess if you are anti social like me, you would only like it then.

@spicee3905 Yeah, I've heard it smells really bad there. Any truth to that?
