Artie was the best. I like Benny too, but Artie was an arranger, composer and instrumentalist of the highest order. Every much the equal of B.G. So, as a complete package Artie was and is tops in my book. I wish I had as much talent in my whole body as he did in his fingernail clippings. I could quit my day job.
This is a good IMIITATION of the Artie Shaw ARRANGEMENT for "Moonglow"..but it is NOT Artie Shaw on the clarinet. A lot of people tried to copy Artie Shaw but none really equalled his tone.
@jim30bell A good imitation, but I appreciate the sound of quality. The trombone solo is far from the original. The original solo is short, but one of the most creative trombone solos - would you know the name of the trombone player on the original recording?
@hommefriday Good question!! My first guess was Jack Jenny, who did the famous trombone solo on Artie Shaw's "Stardust". So, I checked the album cover on my copy of "Moonglow". It states: "And Jenny's soft, sensuous trombone pops up again on Moonglow." Its a nice solo, but not as good (in my opinion) as his classic one on "Stardust".
@jim30bell You may be right on the substitute, first that I know of was Walt Levinsky under Shaws patronage in the 50"s or "60"s, then Dick Johnson in the 80's [I Think} ,Artie picked out those he thought could do justice to his type of music which was done under his direction, see dancing in the dark with shaw conducting and johnson on clarinet.
Unfair to make too many comments re Benny v Artie, Benny oulasted Artie timewise as Artie got fed up with the way music was going,I saw Benny and his band of old timers in 1970 in OZ,sensational, but I just feel Artie was just one up on technique and Bennys turning to a "pro" in the 50's to relearn technique shows what a real prefessional he was but Artie just seemed to have that little extra in technique.
@tstephanuik There is something in music that language will never be able to grasp, it cannot be described, defined or anyhow specified, but somehow, you feel it inside...and with this song, there is a remarkable peace within...the feeling maybe a little bit sentimental, but very beautiful and tranquil.
@af021906 I couldn't agree more with you. The world has never been perfect, but yes, it was more stylish, elegant, and good taste could be found more often than today. Those who see things as they are suffer the most as they are denounced as pessimists who constantly think negatively. But how? when I see shit everywhere and nice things are more and more difficult to find?
@af021906 I agree with you 100%, I was young when big bands were on the air. Can you imagine what I think of that screaming noise that now is called music?
@af021906 i am absolutely agree with you, you wrote it"s for me what i feel about this song. Thanks for the Aristaeus1 and the last two writer you told the others the reality.

One of the all-time great songs of the era, by probably the best clarinetist.

Talbot, i love Artie Shaw i think he is the greatest swing bigband leader of all time
the arrangement of his music is fantastic

Not many comments here for Artie Shaw considering (in many MUSICIANS
opinion) he was a better clarinet player than Benny Goodman ! Playing
clarinet myself I would probably agree.

@talbotvanman Me too!! I have always felt he was better than Benny, very underrated player.

@I967 There´s something that has been lost all over the world: STYLE, ELEGANCE, CHARM, GOOD TASTE..... and ROMANTICISM too.

@1967Love your comment.
Today you pay a small fortune for some "freak-show" in a football-stadium.
In the old days they gave you quality, sentiment and professionalism.
I know my choice and so do you and hopefully lots of others.
