This most likely is from the 7:25 or 8:25 a.m. local news break, when many NBC stations have local news inserts. I think that "Today" production staff calls these breaks "co-ops. In the mid-1980s, the 8:25 a.m. "co-op" often was a continuation of the "After Eight" interview segment. Otherwise, the type of chit-chat in this video extended into both breaks.
That "Today" studio design has to have been one of the best ever that the program had. The production style wasn't bad, either. Nowadays, you have an animated peacock that transitions to the new-style "Today" title and vice-versa, concerts, a 4-hr. format, Matt and Meredith-- in short, "Today" today is, for the most part, just plain unwatchable. Then, as presented in this clip, it was very watchable.
@bmasters1981 This was great, "Today" today is still the show I watch in the morning. Bryant Gumbel,Willard Scott and Jane Pauley were great. Wish they could do the show again for maybe 1 week. To me 4 hours is too much. I normally watch from 7 until about 8:30. It should be only 2 hours. Kathie Lee and Hoda is a waste of time.
