i hv a problem with my breathing.i hv tried breathing in deeply, ensuring that my chest and stomch expands more but i find it ever so stressful. I don't know how else to get more air in my lungs. could u describe how proper breathing is done so i can visualize it when im in the pool?
thanks very vry much.
also, would u be doing any vids on other swimming styles?jst wondering.
Well, from my experience I would say that S shape is a result of good body rotation. When our body rotates it looks like that our hand is doing some S shape but the fact is that its our body that is creating that missleading,
Yes, that's right. Basically, swimmers have to have a mindset of grabbing onto a handle in front of them (entry and anchoring) and pull their body forward.
Thanks coach ! I realised I didn't really know what I was doing until I saw these videos. I tried the high elbow - wing-line, early catch and reaching while breathing (everything basically) for the first time today and I definitely felt I preserved my momentum much better, felt less strain on my shoulders and developed higher speed because of a better overal streamline. I also felt I'm using a lot of new muscles. Thanks again and keep em coming. Greetings from Belgium.
Awesome! Send me a check :-)! Just kidding! I'm glad the videos are working for you and many others. And that's right the shoulders will feel less strain with this technique.
I recently found out this postioning movement which being S-shaped might as well be what u are referring to. Basically what I do is, I do an outward catch and for a moment it looks like I was going for a breaststroke-like movement, then your hand does an S under your forearm to reach the pulling position. I dont know if this has any relevance at all but the sensation it gives me is really like I'm anchoring the water. Any comment on that?
Generally, the shape of the hand and forearm is downward, outward and backward then, inward upward and backwards. The degree is dependent upon the anatomical idiosyncracies of each swimmer. Still, it's deflecting water to "hold" and "anchor". So, your "sensation" is accurate, but I don't like the "S-shaped" analogy anylonger as it often causes swimmers to "pull" instead of "anchor" and "hold".
Thanks for the advice on the S-shaped practice which I learned. I am trying your high elbow advice now. I am 43 years old and can only finish 50m in 43seconds. Is it a bit too slow?
Wonderful tips!!! Anchoring in solid water, the high elbow drill (other vid), the shorter pull, not gliding (outside of drills). Now explanation of this "S" shape business, just the question I'd've asked. GREAT!!!
Thank you for the comment. The "S" shaped pattern of swimming is "not" used in teaching by mose contemporary coaches. It was a technique where a swimmer would try to shape an "S" during the pull. There is some shaping, but this occurs as a result of the articuluation of the arms and movement of the body.
Just found your swimming coaching vids and really like them. Thanks for the tips and keep up the good coaching!

Correct, and do this with the "elbow" maintaining a "high" leveraged postition. Thanks for your comment.

I find it hard to comprehend without seeing it with both arms in water. This is defiantly where I am lacking in my free style. Thanks for the video.
