This movie helped make me want to be a teacher, but too bad teaching is nothing really like this. If we could actually do what we love it would be instead of teaching to the test, griping parents, crazy administration, endless paper work and unrealistic goals that need to be met.
@ alyeahal: He's still at a young enough age, and His mother probably came to his father's rescue a couple times. I know my mom did when my dad seemed insufferable. I mean, I'm not deaf, and Dad doesn't neglect me, but Sometimes, he doesn't understand. BTW, the presentation and especially the last song were a way to tell Cole how much He loved him. It's a good step and he keeps it up throughout the movie.
As much as I liked New Wave, I was a big Beatles fan. It wasn't cool. When Lennon was killed only a hand ful of us felt this way. I went to school that next morning but left. The next day I was sent to the Dean and he asked why I was absent for half the day. I said , "Death in the family." And he said - "Okey."
I have always thought he knew it. As nothing hardly ever flew past him.
I agree w/ you man, but from me, a guy who doesn't know his father, this dad came through in the end and I'm sure Cole couldn't be more happy.... I don't this song made everything okay, but it's a step to the right direction.
Besides, it wasn't just the one song. He arranged the entire presentation/recital as a means to connect with his son, and his son's world, through the medium he loves the most. Doesn't make it better, but as hparas says, it's a step in the right direction.
i love these few scenes :) i cried at the fight between glenn and cole and at the concert even before the john lennon song that glenn sings i started crying!! :)
sonnymma, The music starting at 4:20 is actually the same music near the ending of X-men where Wolverine 'appears' to be dying at the top of the Statue of Liberty. Score by Michael Kamen who used this music at 4:20, 5 yrs later for X-men. Lol. Just in case you still needed to know.
Man, if people are this shocked and upset by Michael Jackson's death, I can't begin to comprehend how much John Lennon's death must have shaken the world.
I didn't know that John Lennon was the one who said "LIfe is what happens to you when you are making other plans." I kept thinking of that quote watching this movie as it is so fitting to that thought.
This is my favorite part of this movie. It's so heartbreaking that his son is that old and he's never bothered to try to communicate with him better than rudimentary signing.
@marikology, Well, that teacher at the special school said it would be easier for Cole because he was young to learn to sign than it would be for his older parents. Yes Mr. Holland's character probably should have made more of an effort to learn to sign but the man did have a full time job as a music teacher. I don't mean this to be an excuse but not everyone is going to have the energy left over to learn sign language even if they should.
@conyelp every parent I know with a special-needs child would walk over hot coals if it benefited their kid. It's hard for me to believe Mr. Holland was too busy. He really just didn't want to, because that would mean accepting (wrongly) that Cole could never enjoy his #1 priority- music. Maybe Mom had more free time to learn, but she wasn't going to accept the idea that she couldn't communicate w/her kid. She had the determination to learn, and Mr. Holland didn't.
@marikology (1 of 2)Hi, if you'll read my post I said I didn't mean for my comment to sound like an excuse for Mr. Holland. Sometimes it helps me to try to understand why a person is or isn't doing something. Back in that time in history there wasn't the understand about what special needs children required. And I'm sure it was a big disappointment to Mr. Holland that Cole would never be able to understand and fully and share music which was the love of Mr. Holland's life.
(2 of 2)I'm also sure that mom did have more free time to learn than dad did, she didn't hold an outside job and was home with Cole. Also that's what mom's do, they go that extra mile to help their children. She had no choice but to learn to sign, that was the only way she could talk with Cole. Mr. Holland chose to gave his energy to his job and the needs of his students. After Cole got older it seemed they had more compatability.
yes that means asshole in sign language. Here is another basic one... if you make a fist and put your thumb by your fingers and move your wrist up and down you are saying "yes"
his song to cole makes me think he won the oscar instead of nic cage playing a drugged out person in leaving las vegas, this parft richard played is so complex its perfection
Due to some copyright problems with MGM, part 8 and 13 have been taken down. The reason for the copyright: The music in the clips!? The songs: I've Got A Woman and The Pretender are in those 2 clips and I guess they belong to MGM. So they deleted the audio in the video clips. I just decided to take down the clips because watching a movie without audio would be very boring. But if I get a bunch of responses saying that you want the clips still up without the audio, I will put them back up.
Mr.Holland reminds me of Mr.Feeny fro Boy Meets World. Both inspirational towards their students. This is such a great movie. The part that really gets me is when he finally gets to conduct the symphony he always dreamed of.
recently i took a 2-week sign language class, and my teacher showed this movie, and i immediately fell in love with it. these 10 minutes (and the part after where cole is sitting at home listening to the record) are without a doubt my favorite parts of the movie...there's so much emotion contained in such a short amount of time. not to mention, the boy who plays cole is really good-looking haha. but there's no information on him anywhere, except for the fact that his name is joseph anderson..
I was born the day John Lennon died. It still makes me very, very angry what happened to him.
