  • does it take square photos and do you wind it normally?

  • but how can i remove the tape clearly? it seems that it is so difficult to remove with using this type of tape-.-

  • How many photos I can do with a 35mm film roll in a holga 120n?

  • I personally choose 35mm, since I don't know anyplace that'll process 120. Thanks! It doesn't look as difficult as I thought it would.

  • You have nice hands. Also nice tattoo, I was thinking of getting something along the same vein, in the form of the equation for standard deviation.

  • Do you know what it's supposed to sound/feel like when the shutter goes off? I've manually set up my Diana F+ by using your method, and I just wanna make sure that I'm actually taking the pictures rather than opening the back and checking and risk damaging the pictures I've already taken.

  • @hajincho not sure with the diana but i'd guess its a particularly plasticky type clicky sound :) just use it as you would normally, along with the click chart or HolgaClicks iphone app, and then develop. Thats the only way you'll know really.

  • do you need to keep the mask on?

  • If I don't have any foam, could I use cardboard or would you not recommend that?

  • @squiddie03 you can use anything that holds the reel in place so that it doesn't move up or down. Should be easy to get a small piece of foam or sponge. Look in craft stores, or as a last resort the supermarket down the bath and shower aisle :)

  • @MelissaKolbrecki by counting the clicks, and keeping track against a chart. Or my iPhone app - HolgaClicks :)

  • do the number to clicks between frames change if the 35mm film is 36 vs. 24 exposures?

  • @norabora2591 no they don't, you simply reach the end sooner :)

  • Btw, I have an autocord minolta... I tried loading a 35mm once but it was quite hard, would you think I can pull it off by using your technique?

  • How come your darkroom is so light?? ;D

  • But if u want light leak is it ok to not tape the red window?

  • @piggiimii I don't recommend that. You get a dirty great red streak in the middle of your images.

  • i used some random kodak 35mm film but it got too exposed. is there any 35 film you would recommend for this process?one that would do as good as when 120 is used.

  • @theshortcurlyguy Random film is fine. I have used 400 ISO in the past but any should be good. Photoshop is your friend if you have really bad light leaks or over exposure

  • is the same thing with the holga colorflash?

  • @AdamxMadness yes - fundamentally the holga design is the same across the whole 120 range.

  • And in Diana F+, how many clicks do we do?

  • @dontneedamoustache do a basic roll of 120 and count how many spins from number to number and there you go thats how far you have to advance. then get a few black bags and in a dark windowless room rewind it by feel. i may set up a slack job dark room just so i can do this and save money. then get cheap film at any local store.

  • @themadscientest I already used the 35mm film i'm going to see tommorow how the photos are.

  • @dontneedamoustache oh, its funny i dont know anything about the plus because i usa a vintage one.

  • @dontneedamoustache how did your pictures turn out?

  • probably a dumb question, but i'm just trying to figure this out since this is my first time using a film camera since I was like 4...

    "wind on 42 clicks"

what exactly does that mean ?

  • @valkyriexfire after you insert the film, you should roll it on 42 clicks, cause the first part of the film was killed by light.

  • Great, more food for the hipsters, only to breed more hipsters...

  • @hcoll I'm a serious photography enthusiast (and may I say that I dislike hipsters a lot), and although the Holgas and similar cameras are used quite frequently by hipsters, I think they do make very cool looking pictures that can be appreciated by most anyone. Basically what I'm saying is that hipsters may use the cameras, but that doesn't mean the cameras are hipster.

  • What's the name of the song?

  • I wanna know how many clicks it has to do before it goes to the next photo, thanks!

  • hi! how much 'clicks' have to do to happen from a photography that already I took to other one, to take a near photography. Sorry, my english it's not very good. Thanks

  • they have a 35 mm backcover for the holga at lomography . com,

however i dont know about the click counting etc.

  • i use the 34 spin rule. spin 34 clicks and then i guess it will be fine :)

  • @cryspyfast you can do this but then you end up with a lot of wasted film.

  • @squarefrog maybe you're right! btw i forgot, thanks for the video man! i tried that way and it worked just fine! thanks

    whats the song?

  • this is clever haha

but i think you need to be very precise about the position of the film so you can get the film exposed right on spot right?

  • @timzoneking using a click chart, or our iPhone app (HolgaClicks) helps minimise film wastage.

  • Hello, can we do the same in a Diana F+?

  • @offdaenz yes you can

  • I'm gonna give this a try next week. Sooo, 42 clicks to wind on. How many clicks between the pictures? Can you use something else than a sponge?

  • are you suppose to remove the mask?

  • Very useful! What's the name of the song?

  • This video is incredibly popular in Thailand, apparently.

  • nice video

  • I just bought the diana mini, it was either that or the holga so i hope i made the right choice..

  • Nice pi tattoo.

  • Hello im about to buy an holga, and i have this doubt, when you take a picture with normal 120mm film, you have to roll the "thingy" an exact number of clicks??? and if so, is it the same number for the 35mm?

my main doubt is... is 35mm film divided into the single shots? that is, do i have to scroll an exact amount of film?? or all that film is photosensitive and i just need to pass my last shot??

  • @zombra89 Firstly, 120 film is easier as it has numbers on the back of the film, so you dont need to remember clicks.

Secondly, you are merely advancing the film to clear the previous frame. The whole roll of 35mm is photo sensitive.

  • @squarefrog oh thanx for your response! so that means i could use a 35mm film of 32 shots?? or whatever is the maximun number of shots on those films? :P

  • @zombra89 You get less than what the film can states, because 35mm in a holga produces much wider images than normal.

  • @squarefrog but still more than 12 shots right?

  • @zombra89 correct.

  • @squarefrog wow thanx so much, im deffinetly gonna try it out :)

  • @squarefrog wow is a very good video but i have i question how would i know how much pictures i take for example i do all this process and when i take i pic know like a put tape on the number how many turns i do for take the next shot?? i will apreciatted a lot

  • Thanks so much!

  • PLEASE REPLY TO MY QUESTION: I just got my holga and I did everything in this video. I even taped the back side with the red window. according to the manual, that is the frame counter window. Now, how will I know how many clicks I have to wind the film advance knob to advance to the next frame?

  • @bonnie2662 Have a read through the comments as this question comes up once a month

  • wait, but when your unloading the film isn't the film going to be rapped around the right side instead of the left now?

  • I think the red marks are kinda cool sometimes.

  • would anyone be able to go more into depth about the 42 clicks? like you do 42 and then you can start taking pictures? and then how many between each picture. i didnt really understand that chart that was referenced.......

    thanks

  • @indypie5 ok - so you load as show above, then wind 42 clicks, take a pic, then wind 35 clicks, take a pic, wind 34 clicks, take pic, etc.

This is on the assumption that you are using the 6x6 mask.

  • What will happen if I use color slide film (Elite Chrome)? Will the developed film strip basically be a miniature print?

  • can i record with this

  • Very nice tutorial. I just got a Holga 120,(using 35mm) so this was very helpful. I do have questions:

To develop the film, would I just give it to the people in charge, with no specifications whatsoever?

Also, is it optional just to tape the counter window? Or would I have to tape the whole camera as suggested? Thanks.

    =]

  • @mysticblue436 i personally like to let them know that the negs may look a bit different to what they are normally used to. they are much wider.

it's not optional to tape the counter window. You HAVE to. For your first roll I'd tape up the seams too. That way you have an increase chance of getting a well exposed first roll. after that you are welcome to experiment with not taping the seams.

  • @squarefrog Thank you!

    =]

  • Thank you very much :)

  • Thank you very much for uploading such an informative video.

Though may i ask whether this could be done with a Diana as well?

  • @Flyingforks It sure can! Search for "photon detector click guide" in google to get a diana 35mm click chart.

  • I HATE "tutorials" that have no talking. I don't know why, I just can't stand them. Nothing against this particular one.

  • can i load the film in the light? im new to photography!!

  • @Nessiegem06 you can load it in light, but you cannot unload in the light or you will ruin your film.

  • They do have an adaptor kit for using 35 mm film in a Holga and it's only $12. Just in case anyone is interested lol.

  • how will i know when to take pictures?

  • @i1z1e1 visit the site accompanying this video

  • tanks for the upload!! ♥_ ♥

  • Oh wow.

  • lol... electrical tape leaves nasty residue, which you probably don't care about on your camera, but I'm sure your developer LOVES getting film with sticky gummy crap, which he unwittingly runs through his machine.

  • @hossrex that's a fair point.

  • @hossrex oh come now, electrical tape has never left sticky residue. Maybe if you live in the south, or if you leave your camera in the sun or in a hot car.

  • @StrangeWorld18

Are you just trying to mislead other people? Why would you say that? Even the person who created this video agreed that it was a fair point.

Why would you want to make a comment that runs the risk of gumming up a machine which processes photographs?

Are you TRYING to make film developing more expensive?

Are you just a total dick?

    Are you an idiot?

  • @hossrex Im sorry. But electrical tape just doesn't leave marks for me.

  • @StrangeWorld18

That's fine. It leaves residue for everyone else... but you have magic tape. Good for you.

  • @hossrex lol maybe its because my electrical tape is from the 80s. I stole it from my brother's garage. Its not very sticky at all. But, I don't want people to ruin their things, so please do listen to hossrex. Perhaps masking tape would be better.

  • @StrangeWorld18

Okay... I apologize. I was rude for no reason, and we're all friends here, so I unequivocally apologize.

The best choice unfortunately is gaffer tape, but that's CRAZY expensive (at least for this poor Holga shooter).

If I had to recommend something on the cheap, it would be a small piece of that blue painters tape. Not perfect... and you're still doing (admittedly minuscule) damage to your developers machinary... but it should work, and leave a minimum of "gunk".

  • Is it safe to assume that you are using the standard 12 exposure insert and not the 16? Maybe that is why the clicks vary. Thanks!

  • nice tattoos

  • will i have the same effects as the 120 film when i use a 135 film?how do you upload your pics to the computer?do you just scan the prints w/ an ordinary scanner cuz i read something about scanning the negatives and using photoshop to invert it and make it to a positive..Thanks.

  • @LOvinLomo using 35mm is completely different. Check my website for more information.

  • Also, Ive seen different sources saying 34 clicks and this one saying 42 clicks to advance between rolls, how much for real?? I never got to see the results of my roll so I dont know.. :/

  • So I have some questions, hoping for some answers from kind people! This mod worked fine except when I went to unload the used film, back-winding the nob at the top of the canister didnt work for me. The only thing I could do was to push the film back into the canister by hand which felt forceful, but worked. Unfortunately when I took it to be processed (at CVS, my only option) the machine ate it up and the whole thing was ruined. Any tips? Why didnt turning the nob work? What else could I do?

  • nice tattoo

  • i just got my Holga yesterday!

how will i know that the film is already used up?

    thanks!!

  • @TormentTimmy you will no longer be able to wind on.

  • Thank you so much! I will be doing this later this week. :]

  • i took my 35mm film into a ihour developer at asda and he said they werent worth printing off so he just gave a me a cd with a few pictures on it, is there anything i need to say next time i go in?

  • you should take it to a pro shop..there they can process the film and then from there you can say how you want your pictures printed

  • @sumbl3b0b say, you fucking get me this prints, i dont care how weird they look, or ill rape you. it works ;)

  • is the rubber bands really necessary ?

  • can you get these shots developed at a 1hr place

  • You can get the film developed, but you'll have to scan in your own film as its much larger than most labs are used to dealing with.

  • nice thanks for the vid should work with my lubitel as well

  • Cool, always good to know how i can mod my holga, i have a ton of 35mm film, though for the most part i use in either my Zenit, or Kiev.

i really want to get a polaroid back, though they are quite expensive.

  • fantastic! thanks!

  • Do I have to tape the red window with the 35 mm film? Because i want the vinigette look

  • vinegette look comes from the lens being too small for the holga; hence the blackish edges of holga photos.

taping the back stop light coming in and overexposing your film: the opposite of vinigetting.

  • I had it lying round at work

  • u find them on ebay

  • where yo buy a sponge? are u serious..

  • Comment removed

  • 24 pose or 36 ? Does it change ?

  • how do i develope 35mm film on my own in my house in my dark room?

  • How many clicks til' you can take a photo?

On the original 120 film, it said....

    so for 35mm how many?

  • i want to get a holga and do this, i like the effect of the sproket holes.

  • waw!!

this is really helpfull, because before really hard to find 120mm film for Diana f+. now i think i can use normal film.

    thx.

  • hey! super helpful video. but how do you know when it's time to unload the 35mm film? I'm using an adapter for my Holga 120gn. And I've pretty much lost count on how many shots I've taken.

Also, I haven't followed the click guide haha. Is that ok? Basically I turn one full round after every shot.

  • you have to count 20 clicks or mark it and it is 1 turn around with the winder :)_

  • it's actually 24 clicks.

  • Thank u! really helpful!

  • I have a toy camera ...that i know really nothing about ???

It's a capital and umm i was wondering how it works like .....where do i put the batteries? I confused ....can anyone help sorry if it's a stupid question but it's one i need answered :/

  • Sorry I've never heard of that camera.

  • very cool, thanks!

  • Do I have to do all this in pitch black? how am i suppose to make all these adjustments in complete darkness???!!!

  • You only need to unload in complete darkness. Watch the video carefully.

  • practice practice practice

  • is this actually working for my diana+ aswell?

i just got gone so i'm not really experienced :)

  • ty i just modded my holga easily to 35mm! I hope the pictures will turn great!

  • Thank you!

  • can i unload the film in the dark, or does it have to be in a "dark room" ?

  • has to be pitch black.

  • OH MAAAANNNNN!!!

what will happen if we unload it it a 'not to dark room'?

    uwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :'(

  • it'll probably be fogged. or ruined.

  • when i developed my film it screwed up. the first part of the film hadnt been exposed at all...how many clicks do i need to do before the first frame we shoot? and how do you know how far youve wound the film when youre putting it in?

also the some frames that were exposed, the colours were prity crap. do you know how dark it needs to be when youre unwinding the film?

  • Comment removed

  • Is that just black painters tape?

  • I used better system ..get a 35 mm film cassette pull some film out of - new 35 mm film on left - tape together .duck tape over red both sides..cut a medium format spool to go in 35mm film on right to turn film ..use sponge and card on left one..

5 clicks then shoot...at end of film cut of..

    ok

  • Ok, so If your shooting 35. film, you just listen to the clicks in the camera to know when to take the next picture?

Just listen for 42 clicks? and then its ok to take the picture...

Sorry im reeally new at this, just got my Holga Yesterday...ANd I want to try this sometime...

  • @26btb actually it's only 30 clicks! after 30 clicks you're safe for the nex picture

  • so for developing, is my best bet to ask for the contact sheet?

  • can you please post a video tutorial on how to fit a panoramic adaptor into a holga and teach us how many clicks are required please?

  • Thanks!!! I dont know how to use 135 film before~

  • ha yeah ill give it a shot, if it works ill write it

  • hey just a question before i try it am i able to use this same technique on a Lubitel 166b? thanks

  • I don't know. Try it.

  • what would happen if i accidentally rewound all the film back into the canister?

  • i actually followed everything except covering the entire outside except for the little window, and i did take like 4 shots stupidly with the cap on, and yet for some reason the film was ruined when i tried to develop it, i'm gonna try again only this time covering the entire back

  • if you are shooting 35mm you have to cover the red window.

  • I usually just toss the lense cap on the holga. Why would it matter if the lense gets scratched? If anything, It adds to the unique look most people want to achieve.

  • If you don't cover the window, you'll ruin the film.

  • what shud i do with the sliders on the back cover(12 and 16)..shud i put them according to the frame inside..if so how?? pls help

  • if you are using 35mm film, it is imperative that you cover up the red window. Or you'll ruin your film. So don't worry about setting them.

  • so i just got my first holga film developed and a bunch of them turned out blank. Do you know why this happened?

  • the most common reason for blank pictures is leaving the lens cap on. the other reason could be that it was too dark to expose anything using the film that you were using.

  • maybe your shutter was set to B (Bulb) instead of N (Normal)? was it blank black or blank white?

  • how do you put the mask back on (frame thing)?

  • what masking should i put?6x6 or 6x4.5?pls help.

  • its up to you.

    6x6 for square pictures

    6x4.5 for rectangle

  • Comment removed

  • my bad WHICH do you recommend?

  • oh hang on - this is 35mm. just use the 6x6 mask. no point using the other one.

  • why tape up the red window? to avoid light leaks? and how does one know how much to move the film/click and when? (sorry if thats a dumb question...)

  • do you wind on another 42 clicks everytime you take a photo? thanks for this video!

  • no, once after you put your film into your holga. after that, you just do ONE whole turn.

  • What is the disadvantage (if any) to leaving on the mask?

  • With 35mm there are disadvantages to leaving the mask in. In fact I recommend it.

  • why use a lot of electrical tape on the outside?

  • Comment removed

  • it prevents light from getting in through the cracks on the edges of the camera

  • can i also use cottons to secure the 35mm film?

  • Um yeah.

  • Okay, I have now gone through all the steps and loaded my Holga with 35 mm film. The only problem is every time I turn the click wheel, to advance to the next frame; my foam makes this really squeaky sound. I'm afraid the foam is scratching up my film. Is this possible? And will alll the pictures be ruined?

  • Don't worry about that. It'll probably be fine.

  • Final effect can be even better with those schratches:P:P

  • i'm sorry, i read through the comments but i couldn't find an answer to my question. i'm a bit iffy about developing/processing (don't know if that's the correct term) 35mm film.

say once i've shot a roll of 35mm film, can't i just take it to the photo lab where they develop/process it and then scan it and put it on a cd for me?

    your help is much appreciated.

  • You can get it developed, but they may not be able to scan it. The reason being is that the actual pictures are wider and taller than normal. So they'd only end up scanning to centre portion of the film.

  • it can use in diana ?
