A lot of us are greatly looking forward to this show in Washington. And no doubt gratitude should be expressed for the loans that are making it possible for us to enjoy these works of art. Yet it is certainly an exaggeration to say that they have been largely ignored, and to chalk this supposed ignorance of Spanish Counter-Reformation culture. It might be more on point to say that, somewhat strangely, the superbly derivative examples of Spanish Colonial Art are better known than the originals.
