Lol, this video just makes me laugh. I've got 5 of them old thumpers, I've gone over the bars before. Stroke a 500 then let it kick back. I'll try to post up a vid of starting one
that;s funny. i had a 83 RM 500 you had to wear MX boots to start it period. not because it kicked back the kick starter was just plain murder on the bottom of your foot. now i have a 83 XL600R if you do the kick it through to tdc and push past a little gas on choke on she starts first kick. best bike i have ever had.. that old girl is a leg breaker.
does it have the commpresion release i have an 84 xr500r and its never kicked back on me but my xr250 dosent have the comp. release and it kicks like a mule
@birdmanofbooze - If it's street legal and a '79, it's most likely a "XL500s" model. Whether XR or XL, they are great bikes with typical Honda reliability.
if you want to start it easier pump the kick like you done and jump on itwhen it get stiff...start at the first or second kick normally...or check your decompressor mine is a 1979
i just bought an '84 XR500R, and the first few times i had a sore foot, but then i found out how to kick it over with sandals on without any risk of a broken foot. slowly kick it over untill it stops at one point, that is "top dead center", kick it one click past TDC . now its ready for a hard kick all the way down. if it doesnt start on the first kick just repeat the process, i promise you it wont kick back. let me know how that works for you or if i didnt explain it properly
Yeah, you can actually start these things by hand when done correctly (and you are spot-on in the procedure, by the way...). However, my son had mistakenly hooked up the lighting coil to the pulser coil input to the CDI, so the ignition was trying to fire about 5+ times per cycle. That wasn't working out so well, as you can see...
When the bike kick back ,wow its so funnie...

@fzrskmr To start any Xr or Xl give it NO throttle. Kick that thing from the side too just as you would on a harley

I had a TT500 I found the best way to start that is to push a few feet and hit 2nd gear and away you went. Nice bike btw.

All I could think of is "kick it like you have a pair". I guess he doesn't have a pair. Why would you put up a vid making yourself look like a moron?
