Once driving a van to take these guys to a show (I think 1999) I asked, "are you guys black metal, death metal, or.....? After a second of silence, the response was "we're metal metal." laughter from all in the van.
Not that it should make any difference (the music is great no matter what you call it), but Ceremony Of Opposites is definately black metal. To call it anything else would be rediculous!
Black metal has gone downhill ever since Samael started doing industrial metal. Don't get me wrong... I like their newer stuff, too. But, in my honest opinion, Ceremony of Opposites was the greatest black metal album ever, and nothing since then comes close to the grandiose "epic"-ness that was on this album.
"I'm a king in a kingdom of suffering..." - most epic, depressing lyrics ever written.
Well , let's not mock the whole genre...There were still really good songs from other bands even if the genre itself had a slow fall for a period..But then again who cares?we still have these epic songs to enjoy:) For example i still love Windir after all these years..
And about depressing lyrics...Did u turn your TV on the past years on MTV?...those are depressing lyrics...It's nothing more depressing than Britney singing

Yeah, this is the epitome of Black Metal. As I said in comment on another Samael song recently (Flagellation... look, you'll find it), "When this came out, it was THE BEST of everything that was Black Metal, shortly after Black Metal first spawned from Death Metal."
Just because it doesn't sound like it was recorded on a casio tape deck doesn't mean it's not Black Metal. Sorry if you disagree.
