So, are the aircraft within the museum actually airworthy?
There's a Sea Fury and Sea Hawk in the museum itself, along with a Seafire too - it may seem like a daft question after all, but I went to a museum in the states and the majority of the aircraft within the museum flew. The people could literally go right up to and touch them.
WASP i think you will find the sea fury was a late WW2 aircraft. Also the first american jet engines were taken from plans handed over to the US from the British Government. Frank whittle had created tested and manufactured a fully working jet engine before the birth of the ME 262 etc
Years ago I was rabbiting with my old dog on the back of Portsdown Hill and the sea fury roared over head and flew down onto HMS Daedulus for it`s display. At one point I was looking down onto the pilot in his cockpit. Danny boy the jack russel terror passed away after 14 happy years. Those rabbits didn`t stand a chance.
Superb footage as ever. I think maybe pilots would refer to take off in the SH owing to the better forward visibility - that for the SF pilot must be near zero at first. Love these two planes, reminds me of the 80s when we had the trio, very sad about the Firefly.
I would hardly call the comet a disaster, having travelled on it, i can say it was a comfortable platform and a far cry from turbo prop travel.
One could consider that the US is a huge country compared to the UK and therefore has the infrastructure to match population and economy. Britain has some fine inventions, productions and engineering to its name. The US did much of its jet research from projects stolen from Germany in WW2. Stealth was a German Idea, see the Horton Aircraft.
It seams a great shame the Comet failed. It was beauty. I understand that after the crashes and tank pressure testing was undertaken the fault was found to be cracks forming around the square windows. I believe they should have been round. Lets not forget Northrop was working on flying wings in the US in the 1930's.
Yeah, and it was a disaster. These aircraft were decent when they came into service, but they were outclassed by planes like the F-8 Crusader and early American jets.
WASPfreak......early American jets?......most early American jets (late 1940s) had British engines because the Americans didn't know how to make them. Even later US engines owed alot to US designers reverse engineering earlier British engines.
Two gems...interesting even aside of a jet the Seafury looked marvelous... during the 2nd war they didnt allow hawker to use the Centaurus engine on the Tempest, few years later the Seafury was shoting down Mig jets in Korea...
I remember this Seahawk, I was involved in it's rebuild at Station Flight,Rnas Culdrose Nr Helston back in the 70's.We did a few air displays with it till Yeovilton's Historic Flight comandeered it.I remember replacing the engine one weekend.
This is a superb video, and the Sea Hawk is lovely. I'm building the Sea Hawk for FS2004, and this video has proved invaluable, right down to the cartridge start. I love how like many restored classics, the RNHF has removed the gunsight for a GPS. Not one for the purists, but perfectly understandable.
Its really good to hear that this video has been of use to you. I'd be interested in seeing the finished article. Are FS2004 models compatible with FSX?
It's a cartridge (gunpowder cannister) starter system used on early jets to "kickstart" the turbine into life wth a cloud of smoke! It was used on several postwar jets, inlcuding the Canberra bomber and many others...
The sea hawk's a sexy plane.

These aircraft were operational during the same time periods as the A-4 Skyhawk, F-8 Crusader, and the early phantom variants.

I once heard Brian Sanders describe the Sea Fury as a ' God damn, bitchin, ass kickin fighter' love it!
That Centaurus sounds so sweet, and the Sea Hawk is the prettiest jet fighter ever built.
