SOOOO GNARLY!! i've been trying to find instructions on the actual build everywhere..no luck yet tho..i just wanna make one of the boxes..can't afford two right now :/ but do u kno when ur about to put up the directions?? props too u tho..and ur other vids..all u brahs rip!!
I'm talking about the actual base, not the top. I'm using HDPE for the top.But if you look at the end of it, you see a triangle. (between the legs) what did you use?
Does anyone know what the best kind of metal is for a rail? i don't want to spend a ton on stainless steel but i don't want it to rust either...any suggestions?
i suggest ABS pipe...its the same as pvc but its alot stronger and its black, but it is a little more expensive but not much. i already built 2 rails out of pvc and i wish i wouldve known about ABS sooner
good job but i have my own bok and ive found the fact that if u use a plasctic cover with a flat srface it will make for better riding also it mre realistic
dont use pvc it shatters in the cold. your best bet is to go to a hardwre store and buy some sort of a plastic top. you want a flat surface thats easy to slide across without catching an edge along with metal coping so your edges dont dig into the top and fuck your top/self up.
Don't use pvc, if you ride it when its below 5ish degrees, maybe 10-15 it shatters on impact. i watched my friends break after like 5 minutes of doing riding it. So don't use pvc! results in a broken rail, and a nasty fall! :(
well, i said i would make a rail and its just like this 1. bout 5 mins ago i spraypainted some stencils on and i have space for 2 more so im lookin for sumthin good. ill put up a vid when my friend shows me how and as soon as the drop in isnt solid ice. im getting snow wednesday tho. thx for the inspiration i cant wait to hit it up
ive seen 10 ft pipes but not 15 ft...but if you do proabably 4 bucks? and wideness is all preferance. wider box, easier to stay on. narrow, like a rail
i was thinking of building something like this i planned on laying a 2x6 or whatever you want for the cap and getting a roll of flashing like 8" wide and put over it. you can fold the edges over the sides and nail it down- and you can buy nice long rolls of it. it would be cheaper than pvc if youre putting 4 pieces side by side. let me know what you think.
well i wanna do this EXACTLY, but is there like a typed instructuions? cuz this isnt too clear to me. i'll show my dad, maybe he'll understand it. this will be my "christmas present."
yea im in the process of making written instructions. The design was 100% ours so we came up with the structure and everything. So ill try to get you instructions asap
I made a rail out of pvc and wood and it costed me like nothing... the wood i jacked from construction sites and the pvc i went out and bought for like 20$
tell me what you think about my idea...i would take an old ski or two and make a box similar to that and just ut the skis on top and use that as kind of a rail. The only little probem i see with this is that you might mess up your edges on the skis by having the edge on edge going together
it work probably work better with a snowboard. if your going through that much trouble to get a slide surface i would just buy HDPE and have it cut 4 inches wide. a 4ft by 8 ft sheet will only be like 60 dollars
yo this is a BA easy design and im definatly making it. i just have a question. what size wood did u use for the legs, and how big of a sheet of ply wood do u need for the 2 sid skirts?
This inspired me to build my own rails, so thanks... I made two 10 ft rails, but I made the top interchangeable so that I can switch the rail from a thin rail to a wider, box type rail. Thanks for the idea, I can't wait to get out and use it this winter...
10 feet is the ideal length, because the pipes are 10 feet long. However, the Plywood is actualyl only 8 feet long...so it take slightly more effort to make it 10 feet. But believe me...you need that 2 extra feet. If you make it any longer than 10 feet you will have to add pipes which will add seams to the slide surface (PVC) So i recommend going 10 feet.
liquid nails bond two pieces of wood together. U need a caulk gun with it. If you go to lowes or home depot and ask they can help you get it. The top was around 4-5 inches wide, and the bottom around 2 1/2 ft wide.
do you have to water it down before you use it? do you need to store it during the night? will it ruin if it gets wet or freezing cold overnight(pvc pipe cracking)? Sorry so many questions.
Water isnt nessecary, the pvc is actually very slick without any lubricant. storage isnt nessecary overnight. The pvc will not crack from the freezing, and if you use housepaint for your box should be for the most part water resistant and resistant to freezing. We set up the boxes and just leave them out in the winter. In the summer I store them under a tarp or in a garage, because the rain can mess it up. The snow won't though because it doesnt melt in the winter.
screw 1 1/2 inch screws up into the pipe from the underside of the plywood. you need to hold the pipes in place however. hope that helps, that part of our boxes is probably the most confusing part to explain
you mean wider. a bigger pipe would make it structurally weak...and with the setup we had it on, it wouldnt withstand one person. but the box we made was more like a rail width wise
liquid nails, i wish i knew about those a few months ago but oohwell. i made a skinnier, single 10 foot, 3 pipe wide flatrail of similar design but i wish my base looked more like urs. very nice and clean looking
around 26 inches tall...including the feet of course. it was i believe 32 inches wide....getting smaller at the top to around 5 inches at the top, about the width of a flatrail, and of course, 10 feet long
Your rails are sick. I think i'm going to make me one. But i have a few questions.... So does each box cost around 50 or 100 dollars? Also, do you have to store after every night? And about how heavy are they? Sorry lots of questions
its fine. questions are good. well, two boxes cost about 100 dollars, depending if you utilize the materials you have. i would do a lot of planning beforehand. a lot. do all the calculations before you go out to buy things.
buy some extra lumber just in case, so that way you wont have to go to the store all the time.
for weight, i dont know how to make a good estimate...but two people can move it not easily, but not hard either. with 4 people its light as a feather
so each box costs around 50 dollars. you may spend more or less depending on your budget and pre planning. we bought everything before hand with good planning and only made one trip to a local paint shop.
so for the pvc pipe how thick was it, and what was teh diameter, also what was the type? like i have a plan made but there is a few pvc's that look liek yours but have different names...for example gas vent, vaccum and high pressure... gas vent seemed hardest and thickest but would that make drilling into it hard? did you pre drill the holes... lmfao loads of questions
yea those are good questions though. the pvc i was talkign about the diamter...not the thickness. the smaller diameter will withstand a lot more than a big pipe. we used 1/4 inch thick pipe.
as for the pvc type, i dont know what we used, but go with the gas vent stuff. where are you getting the pipe from? since its pvs, drilling should be easy, regardless how thick it is. and we did not predrill them. we used clamps to keep them in place and drilled up into the pipe directly.
i just picked mine up at lowes and they only had one type. i found it in the plumbing section. but a smaller and thicker pipe like you described will hold up a lot better than a thinner pipe. cracking occured in small places with our pipes we used when my skis hit it, but if you use that thicker pipe, it should not be a problem
cracking i mean when we did 270 ons and 270 offs. when landing on it, it will not crack
yea, it is slicker than rails and faster than your traditional box. its cheap, easy to obtain. but it can crack if you do 270 ons and you dont make it on the box and hit the side of it. i give it a thumbs up for snowboards though.
the thing is that i don't snowboard or ski; i freesled. (all the videos are in my channel) the material on the bottom of my sled is different than a ski or board so it doesn't exactly slide as well as a board/skis. but, we took a trip up to NH to sled on a terrain park at Whaleback Mtn. there set-up had good boxes and our sleds slid extremely well. i don't know if it was HDPE or lexan or whatever. but i made a rail out of pvc and i tested it during the summer with snowgel. it slid decently
It was most likely HDPE. We used that to build an 8 ft T-box...its what most boxes are made with. I would invest in HDPE, it costs like 50 bucks for a 2 ft by 4 ft sheet, depending where you get it. get at least 1/4 inch thick.
No, HDPE needs to be bought from a plastics supplier. look for a local plastic supplier before you look online. your best bet is usplastics, good pricing, though i never actually ordered from them. I would look for it locally though, it saves time but you generally spend a little more for that
why would you put a logo on your rail? dumbass be original.

so for the pvc pipe how thick was it, and what was teh diameter, also what was the type? like i have a plan made but there is a few pvc's that look liek yours but have different names...for example gas vent, vaccum and high pressure... gas vent seemed hardest and thickest but would that make drilling into it hard? did you pre drill the holes... lmfao loads of questions

yea those are good questions though. the pvc i was talkign about the diamter...not the thickness. the smaller diameter will withstand a lot more than a big pipe. we used 1/4 inch thick pipe.
as for the pvc type, i dont know what we used, but go with the gas vent stuff. where are you getting the pipe from? since its pvs, drilling should be easy, regardless how thick it is. and we did not predrill them. we used clamps to keep them in place and drilled up into the pipe directly.

i just picked mine up at lowes and they only had one type. i found it in the plumbing section. but a smaller and thicker pipe like you described will hold up a lot better than a thinner pipe. cracking occured in small places with our pipes we used when my skis hit it, but if you use that thicker pipe, it should not be a problem
cracking i mean when we did 270 ons and 270 offs. when landing on it, it will not crack

does the pvc provide a good sliding surface?
OuterLimitsSledding 3 years ago
yea, it is slicker than rails and faster than your traditional box. its cheap, easy to obtain. but it can crack if you do 270 ons and you dont make it on the box and hit the side of it. i give it a thumbs up for snowboards though.

the thing is that i don't snowboard or ski; i freesled.

I would invest in HDPE, it costs like 50 bucks for a 2 ft by 4 ft sheet, depending where you get it. get at least 1/4 inch thick.

can you purchase it at home depot?
OuterLimitsSledding 3 years ago
No, HDPE needs to be bought from a plastics supplier. look for a local plastic supplier before you look online. your best bet is usplastics, good pricing, though i never actually ordered from them. I would look for it locally though, it saves time but you generally spend a little more for that
