@whowho You want to see another cute spider, check out a video called "Putnami Jumping Spider Being Cute", the spider is amazing, it looks a lot like this spider, but it also has spiked hair like a punkrocker.
1 year ago while i was sitting outside a little jumping spider looked out under the table. i hold my finger to it first it tried to escape, but at last i got it ;) i let it jump from finger to finger a few times than i put it into a glass caught a fly and feed it in my hand.
one day later a saw a jumping spider at the same place again it looks like the one the day before. it stared at me and as i put my finger to it i expected it would flee, but it doesnt.
@blueblueberrypie 1st of all the spider is way too small to bite her and secondly its cause the spider don't see the point of it. usually spider will only bite human in dangermyself who always played whith them younguer never got bited at all and i got form garden spider to tarantula in my hand.
Too cute, great video! These are the only spiders I can bring myself to watch and not get all creeped out by. ^u^ She looks like she's waving and trying to dance.
Personally I don't like bugs of any kind but learning about them is interesting. How big does this spider grow? Does it bite? Being that it looks directly at you at times, has it ever jumped on your face?
heyas, nice to see a girl into spiders.. i love spiders also, i used to keep them into jars and watch how they build their spider web and grow up :).I even had to hunt bugs literally for them, but tbh i don't think i could keep them in my palm as you do, anyways see you around
Ah. I Live in Gulf shores and I haven't taken the time to do research on the types of spiders living around me. However, I Know for certain that there are several types of jumping spiders, Black Widows, and Brown Recluses (Sp?)
And about the ants in your comment, I was walking to my house and saw a jumping spider with a ant that it had caught. It was pierced in its fangs. I had just figured that it was a quick snack. But it can kill them you say.
ants are not advisable as food as they sometimes can kill the spider instead. they are also not substantial enough as food as i imagine they wouldn't be 'juicy' enough. most spiders just stay away from ants. flies and crickets would be the best as food. size-wise, anything same or smaller than the spider would be ideal. sometimes a slightly larger prey is also ok if it isn't too hard to kill (flies, crickets, mozzies are ok).
Very cute spider :}.. I got a female one about 1-2 inches long and just had a egg sack a week ago which has almost hatched! B4 she had the egg, she was a huge jumping spider about 2-4 inches long.. i couldent believe my eyes when i saw her on my house. I feed her mostly crickets and flies but i fed her once a bee lol.
thanks jun! i wonder if you might have mis-measured your spider though - when they are gravid with eggs, they do get fatter and rounder but they would not be longer in actual body length. in fact, very rarely do they get as big as 2 inches. lucien grew up to be a pretty big jumper and she was 1.5 inches. a 4-inch jumper would be attacking cats. lol! =)
you dont. you just keep them in a cage/jar/closed space and keep them well fed. take them out whenever you feel like it, and you have yourself a pet jumping spider.
el5pk is right. you can't actually domesticate spiders. i have handled lucien since she was a baby and i do notice that she was not as afraid of me as her siblings were. that's not an indication of her being domesticated - it was probably more like, she got used to walking around on this warm, fleshy surface and no harm seemed to come to her. =)
different spiders seem to have different temperaments, so some may seem more docile and happy to be handled. =)
She's lovely. I love how jumping spiders deliberately come and literally stare at you - checking people out whether they know them or not! I'm only just learning more about jumping spiders and I've never known anything that size to have that kind of curiosity before, it's fascinating!
I love these little spiders, they're so unbelievably intelligent. When they're domesticated, they really do show just how human they can be. They explore and observe, and become so docile. Then they go through an aggressive phase, then they die. But aren't they adorable anyway?!
i've never witnessed an aggressive phase so far. but then every spider has a different temperament. i tend to handle the nervous ones less frequently, in case they freak out and get hurt while freaking out. yes, they are adorable no matter what they do! =)
How cute. I have two females that are a bigger species that are black with red and yellow. Still deciding on names for them. One has an egg sac and the other one looks like it might be gravid.
that's awesome! lucien's species is about 1 inch in body length as an adult - she was just a baby in these vids! =D feed the gravid one well and she will have lots of healthy babies!
Its so cool how they're so fast. One minute shes one place, then *poof* shes instantly somewhere else... They're also such curious creatures. I once had one on my desk, and it just sat there, watching me. It would wave its front legs like it wanted attention. Id reach down, and it would first jump back, then run up and jump on my hand. I must have spent an hour or so playing with it, before taking it outside. Since then I've instated a kill-no-jumping-spider rule at my house lol
all spiders have venom, that is how they kill their prey. the size of their fangs is not an indicator of how venomous they are. most jumpers have fangs that are curved towards each other, and depending on their size, they are usually not big enough to pierce human skin. even if they do, most of them won't be worse than a bee sting. there are about 4-5 non-jumpers that can do more harm to humans tho. also, tarantula fangs are shaped different - those do penetrate easily and will cause much pain.
I recently caught a yellow sac in my room, I think it was trying to be nice because I woke up and saw it on my window sill staring at me. So I stared back :)
Cute spider though, I'm sure it's a great friend =D
Jumping spiders are cool. I sometimes find them in my house but I know it might not find any food in here so I try and catch them and put them outside. I think they come in through the windows I leave cracked open a bit.
Well everything deserves to live. I mean an insect may seen unintelligent and worthless to us so people kill them without any thought...but I see it like this. Imagine one day an alien race lands on our planet. If they are so advanced, maybe we will be seen like insects compared to them...so would our lives be worthless because they are more advanced? Definitly not. So really we are like the intelligent aliens and the bugs are like us. We should show compassion to the creatures below us :)
LOL! spiders don't over-eat. they eat as much as they feel is appropriate, and stop when they're full. there is no such thing as "too much" to them. :)
I mean, spiders will do just fine if you feed them 2-3 times a week (they do need water though) because, from what i've heard/read, the more you feed them the faster they molt and grow...
And you dont' want your little guy/gal to have a short lifespan.
This is assuming that they are similar to tarantulas.
thank you but i already know that. :) the video was shot after she'd just had a meal. in fact, they can even be fed once every 3 weeks, which is what the lab does. i fed them more as they were growing up to get them to develop well, but i generally feed them once a week these days.
lab? r u a researcher? wat do u feed them when they are just tiny babies? i tried giving some ants to other jumper babies, but doesn't seem to be too filling.
i'm not a researcher, i'm just friends with the lab. ants are generally not used as food, as some of them can kill the spiders instead. they usually have an acidic taste as well. i use pinhead crickets now.
it might be hard finding them for sale as they're mangrove spiders in asia, but you can try phidippus regius. they're quite similar-looking, with tufts of hair and all. :) i'm not sure if they would have the same temperament though!
I got a P. regius the other weekend at a reptile/exotic pet expo.. I haven't held her yet, and I probably won't (I'd be scared she'd get away and end up a cat/dog toy) but she is so cute.
aww... please don't be scared of her! :) most people don't realise that spiders are much more afraid of humans than the other way round. imagine dealing with a moving mountain that can crush you any second! :)
hi there! love your work! no, she's not pregnant, she's just fat. :) i may breed her at a later stage but i haven't decided yet. she's too cute to be hiding away hatching babies. i will breed her sisters though. i have lots more footage of her, and her brother tiga. will post them once i get a more stable computer!
thanks for the kind words! your vids are awesome :)

What does it mean when the spider waves its front legs like that ?

@MsWeaselette
it tried to appraise the distance and get ready to jump, but they also communicate with their front legs. i hope you lose your arachnophobia one day.

Um, Jumping spiders are extremely small but have huge fangs - are Jumping spiders poisonous?

all spiders have venom, that is how they kill their prey. the size of their fangs is not an indicator of how venomous they are. most jumpers have fangs that are curved towards each other, and depending on their size, they are usually not big enough to pierce human skin. even if they do, most of them won't be worse than a bee sting. there are about 4-5 non-jumpers that can do more harm to humans tho. also, tarantula fangs are shaped different - those do penetrate easily and will cause much pain.

aww... please don't be scared of her!
